Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

Clay              0:00:00 (Pop-up)
Hello, my dear friends, and welcome to another Dusty Show Accuplaylist entry. It has been a while since I neglected my archives, but now, it has happened.

Checking the archives themselves, it seems that this archival neglect initially occured from Sept. 2008 through February of 2009. A five month span of failing to tend to the archives, of dropping the ball, of being too busy to keep up. And now, it's happening again. I'm falling behind. Let's pinpoint where it happened. December 13th, maybe? And ever since. Over a month. I keep waiting to snap out of it, but life is interceding. I must find a way to work around work. We all must.

This week's show was originally supposed to feature a lengthy story I wrote last weekend while on retreat. However, I have experienced a number of computer problems after dropping mine on it's edge on the concrete. It worked fine for a week, but now I see that te back panel is half-loose and slightly bent. My cursor has a mind of its own, and I find that whole sections of my story were oddly altered by the injured brain of my computer. Perhaps its brain isn't injured. Perhaps it is a simple malfunction of the typing mechanism. At any rate, I'm sure it will cost in excess of $500 and I don't want to spend that right now. They will say something about possible hard-drive damage and start bellowing on and on about data retrieval and additional costs and lack of warranty and might take three to four weeks and .... I'm going analog again. That's all there is to it. AND. That's IF I ever get out on the streets again. Haven't done a proper interview since the slump began. Maybe it's been some type of post-election letdown. I'm not sure, but I'm running on creative fumes and sucking up valuable airspace that some youngster could use to launch him/her self to wherever they dream of being launched to. The moon! I say we go to the moon in this de-cade and do the other thing!

I found these 12 LP's upstate in my secret antique store. $1.50 ech. Buy 5, get one free. It had been a while since I lost my mind and bought too many crappy albums. I really did it this time. Here are the Dandy Dozen. 12 picks that each intrigued me on some level and promised (at least to me) to deliver at least 15-seconds each of something transcendant.

Fabio sits in with me at the beginning of the show, and then bails as he often does to meet 'a friend' somewhere. Later in the show, I take some listener calls. Hope you enjoy this episode. Things aren't as they once were, but ... they never are.

Jo Jo Gunne talk with Fabio.
Jo Jo Gunne  Rhoda   Favoriting Bite Down Hard  Asylum  1973    Featuring Jay Ferguson of "Thunder Island" fame

Turntable Three - Total FAIL! Missing a Channel. Ground Wire Dangling

Again ... Jo Jo Gunne
What intrigued me about Rhoda was the thought that it was a BAND composition, as opposed to a Jay Ferguson composition, so everyone in the group puts their two-cents in. Drum solo, guitar work-out - unusual prog time-signatures. A throw down Jo Jo Gunne jam! Of course, it's relegated to the last track on the LP, where good songs often wind up. I like this track and think it worthy.

Fabio predictably trashes the drum solo.

5-Minutes a Song

Fabio Dislikes It

AccuPlaylist Comments
Parker McGee  Talkin' 'Bout Loving You   Favoriting Parker McGee  Big Tree  1976  LP  McGee wrote big hits for England Dan and John Ford Coley

I had never heard of Parker McGee before, but guessed that it would sound pretty much as it does. Mid-'70's soft-rock, a format I mostly enjoy. Parker wrote some big hits, and this is no doubt his chance to shine as a performer AND writer.

Fabio Mocks the Synth Solo

Yoke Shirt and Latticed Piano Music Holder

This Sucks!

Dan Fogelberg Discussed
We actually did play a lot of Fogelberg on our retreat. He has many sturdy and sometimes moving songs. Sad he died of cancer not long ago. Dan Fogelberg, of Peoria, Illinois, always remembered, on Dusty.

Fabio ... Hardened Old Reptile
The Rings  It's Not Enough   Favoriting The Rhythm Method  MCA  1981  LP  Boston band?
This Rings sounds pretty damned good to me. I like it. Nice ambient drum sound. A hook. Pleasant tones. Accepted into my library with a 6 rating, sax solo and all. I am letting sax back in because the hating of it is fascist. Blow, Danny! (Rick James)

Fabio Hates It

Stink Banned
Nancy Sinatra  Long Time Woman   Favoriting Nancy  Warner/Reprise  1969  LP  Featuring many Wrecking Crew members

Co-Ramp
Something touches me about this Nancy track. Pretty melody. Evocative of the past to me. Makes me feel a little sadness that isn't altogether unpleasant. .
Johnny Most and Glenn Ordway  Excerpt   Favoriting Not To Be Denied -The Road to the Boston Celtics 15th NBA World Championship  Columbia Special Products  1984  LP  Celtics Championship Commemorative LP

Sports Talk with Fabio

Bacon Thins@ How I Miss Them
Trevor Rabin  Red Desert   Favoriting Trevor Rabin  Chrysalis  1978  LP  Fabio Says Farewell
Cool effort from a young South African man bound for bigger glories. Pretty ambitious. Interesting where it led. Worthy, I'd say. Doesn't mean I love it, but it interests me. You? dusty@wfmu.org

My Imaginary Mind

Humpy Talk
Engelbert Humperdinck  Too Beautiful To Last   Favoriting In Time  London  1972  LP  I love humpy!

Fabio Returns to Say Goodbye ... Again ... and get Humpy with it.
The Dodgers  Don't Know What You're Doing   Favoriting Love on the Rebound  Polydor  1978  LP  I was too lazy to actually flesh out the story of The Dodgers Badfinger roots. I'll leave that to you.
I do notice a definite Mott The Hoople influence on this song. The guitar tone (Ariel Bender or Mick Ralphs .... more Mick-Like) and the song structure. SOunds like Marionette from "The Hoople." Then it sounds like Day Tripper, and then it gets psychedelic and backwards. I guess that's all GOOD! The Dodgers!

Dodger Talk with the Lingering Fab

The Dandy Dozen

Lobo ... real name?

Kent LaVoie

Lobo  Thinking Of You   Favoriting A Cowboy Afraid of Horses  Big Tree  1975  LP  Lobo ... of Me and You and a Dog Named Boo fame.

No, this show does NOT mark the end of OWS as was posited on the AccuPlaylist.

Constructive Criticism from Steve

Harnessing the Power ... Again .... but ... Spent ..... Spent!
Cock Robin  When Your Heart Is Weak   Favoriting Cock Robin  Columbia  1985    U.S. band, big in Europe in the mid-'80's. I like the singer's voice. Peter Kingsbery, A female vocalist, Anna LaCazio, shares lead vocal duties. Steve Hillage-produced. I like their unusual song-structures on the record. Pop production, but unorthodox tuneflow, ala Pet Shop Boys.

Phonedeth™

Stuff - Red Sauce - War - AWB -
Sky King  Secret Sauce   Favoriting Secret Sauce  Columbia  1975  LP  Someone informed me that this was the Tower of Power horns on this track. I just like how CRAZY it is, even though it's not my 'type' of music. Still have to appreciate the freneticism! !!!!

Kim From New Jersey Calls ...

Do You Like Me? dusty@wfmu.org

Fabio ... an Intimidating Character

The Rascals  It's Wonderful   Favoriting Once Upon A Dream  Atlantic  1969  LP  LOVE this song. Reminds me of my big brother, Scott, bringing records home from North Texas State in the late-''60's.

That's it for another episode of The Dusty Show. Thanks for listening, and for your continued support. I know it's been a while since I did interviews, and the show has been a bit more thrown-together than usual. I'll admit it, the 'job' gets in the way a bit, but I have to do it. Bills and all. Just like you. Still, I'll try to do my best and I hope you'll keep listening when you can. Fun times ahead, I'm sure. You enjoy these cold winter months and tune in next week, my friend. Until then ... take care and ...

Always Remember ...

When the 'arf-made recruity goes out to the East
'E acts like a babe an' 'e drinks like a beast,
An' 'e wonders because 'e is frequent deceased
Ere 'e's fit for to serve as a soldier.
Serve, serve, serve as a soldier,
Serve, serve, serve as a soldier,
Serve, serve, serve as a soldier,
So-oldier OF the Queen!

Now all you recruities what's drafted to-day,
You shut up your rag-box an' 'ark to my lay,
An' I'll sing you a soldier as far as I may:
A soldier what's fit for a soldier.
Fit, fit, fit for a soldier . . .

First mind you steer clear o' the grog-sellers' huts,
For they sell you Fixed Bay'nets that rots out your guts --
Ay, drink that 'ud eat the live steel from your butts --
An' it's bad for the young British soldier.
Bad, bad, bad for the soldier . . .

When the cholera comes -- as it will past a doubt --
Keep out of the wet and don't go on the shout,
For the sickness gets in as the liquor dies out,
An' it crumples the young British soldier.
Crum-, crum-, crumples the soldier . . .

But the worst o' your foes is the sun over'ead:
You must wear your 'elmet for all that is said:
If 'e finds you uncovered 'e'll knock you down dead,
An' you'll die like a fool of a soldier.
Fool, fool, fool of a soldier . . .

If you're cast for fatigue by a sergeant unkind,
Don't grouse like a woman nor crack on nor blind;
Be handy and civil, and then you will find
That it's beer for the young British soldier.
Beer, beer, beer for the soldier . . .

Now, if you must marry, take care she is old --
A troop-sergeant's widow's the nicest I'm told,
For beauty won't help if your rations is cold,
Nor love ain't enough for a soldier.
'Nough, 'nough, 'nough for a soldier . . .

If the wife should go wrong with a comrade, be loath
To shoot when you catch 'em -- you'll swing, on my oath! --
Make 'im take 'er and keep 'er: that's Hell for them both,
An' you're shut o' the curse of a soldier.
Curse, curse, curse of a soldier . . .

When first under fire an' you're wishful to duck,
Don't look nor take 'eed at the man that is struck,
Be thankful you're livin', and trust to your luck
And march to your front like a soldier.
Front, front, front like a soldier . . .

When 'arf of your bullets fly wide in the ditch,
Don't call your Martini a cross-eyed old bitch;
She's human as you are -- you treat her as sich,
An' she'll fight for the young British soldier.
Fight, fight, fight for the soldier . . .

When shakin' their bustles like ladies so fine,
The guns o' the enemy wheel into line,
Shoot low at the limbers an' don't mind the shine,
For noise never startles the soldier.
Start-, start-, startles the soldier . . .

If your officer's dead and the sergeants look white,
Remember it's ruin to run from a fight:
So take open order, lie down, and sit tight,
And wait for supports like a soldier.
Wait, wait, wait like a soldier . . .

When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
An' go to your Gawd like a soldier.
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,
So-oldier of the Queen!

@NGH: The SEALs or someone who was one has a website on mistakes SEAL poseurs make, ranging from some small things no inside would claim, to really obvious ones--that guy made a really obvious one!

@glenn: Orwell didn't share the worldview of Kipling, but had a lot of positive things to say about him. Check out that essay sometime.

Sky King was also the name of a really great homeless guy in Georgetown/DC circa late 70s /early 80s. I have vivid memories of him walking around with a scraggly beard & one piece women's bathing suit.

My father was an officer in the Navy, and I lived overseas for 3 years as a wee one. Being a glutton for the trivial, I absorbed all sorts of crap from all lines from all branches of the military.

Actually I love Clay in all his settings--alone, or with Fabio (or ANY other DJ!) all sides of his personality RAWK!

The music this hour is historically important Clay, for without it, the kids would not have run to the edge of the musical universe to create Punk, Death Metal, Rap...etc,.. .otherwise, well otherwise there would be no FMU! With Clay, the universe meets in the middle and harmony is achieved, peace ensues!
