If anyone has info or an opinion about Rehoboth Beach, DE, please do tell!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Doug Schulkind:

I haven't hung out at Rehoboth since the mid-'60s!
Avatar 5:38pm kat330:

We're just considering places with two criteria: An ocean beach and an airport (nearish by) where there are nonstop flights from Louisville. That's a VERY short list unfortunately. But I believe Rehoboth is the closest Atl Ocean beach to BWI, yes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Doug Schulkind:

@kat330
Not sure if Bethany Beach is closer. Unless, of course, you're referring to the British West Indies...
Avatar 5:42pm glenn:

holy crap, you guys are keeners. you might as well just leave the comments board running 24/7, drummer.
Avatar 5:42pm kat330:

Aha, Philo mentioned Bethany Beach, too. Do you recall any pros or cons between them? Or perhaps it's all con these days? ;) And we're considering a late April trip, so suppose no swimming could be involved, daggit.
Avatar 5:44pm kat330:

Hello, mr. glenn! We weren't here last week, so we figured we'd get an early berth today.

Hiya glenn! There is always a WFMU comment board unspooling somewhere...

@kat330
Honestly, I haven't been there since about 1965. My guess is they are both monstrously overdeveloped.

There are an estimated 92 LOST nuclear bombs. Lookie here: genecurtis.wordpress.com...

Avatar 6:01pm Matt from Springfield:

@Philo: You would NOT believe that field! Walked into a spring of water. Good thing there's a mat to wipe on here.

@Ph&kat: Rehoboth (or the nearby Lewes) is a nice beach, popular with retirees, no sales tax in DE. It is cold water most of the off season, if that's a concern.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:01pm listener james from westwood:

howdy, ndbob & all here for the bomb test. don your goggles before the countdown....
Avatar 6:02pm Philo Gristle:

@James Fantastic idea -- hope you took it easy on pills and shotguns! What (little) I know of American politics, I learned from Hunter.
Avatar 6:02pm kat330:

@Matt: After locating it on the map, I keep thinking of it as Bebe Rebozo Beach. ;) So is it (still) worthwhile to stay on (in late April) or is it the bomb (in the bad sense)?
Avatar 6:02pm Matt from Springfield:

Excellent, Studio P comes to C, now Studio C comes to P!
Avatar 6:03pm ndbob:

ah used to have this one
Avatar 6:04pm Matt from Springfield:

@kat: It is even nicer and more tranquil (and far less touristy) in the off-season. Not as many places are open, but it's not like you'd need all of them year round. Cold water is the only deterrent. That and retail outlet stores proliferated like fungi.
Avatar 6:05pm Matt from Springfield:

Joe McG has played this Sons of the Pioneers--great progressive statement for the time. Cowboys can be pretty smart too, y'know!

@Doug: Retroactive Best Cowboy Lyric Grammy is ordered for them!
Avatar 6:08pm kat330:

The Baltimore destination consideration has nothing to do with the Ravens, btw. We are a Superbowl-free household. Only other "southern" beaches close to nonstops are Miami (where we've been) and Houston, which has nothing even as close as Rehoboth.
Avatar 6:08pm ndbob:

this is (or was) the land of missile silos - a friend of mine actually helped to build one
Avatar 6:10pm ndbob:

@kat @philo I'm originally from Baltimore - not a Superbowl free household here - but frequently the only game I watch
Avatar 6:11pm Philo Gristle:

@Matt Don't care if the pizza looks grotty, long as they taste tasty! Sounds like a beach-only pizzeria might even serve some seafood pizzas... scallop me a slice!
Avatar 6:11pm Matt from Springfield:

@NDBob: Some of which are decoy "scarecrow" silos, with all the active ones run by underground missile control bunkers throughout the state. I assume with the new nuclear treaty and budget cutting, a lot of those decommissioned will probably come out of the Dakotas.
Avatar 6:11pm kat330:

Congrats on your win, Bob! If we do make this Baltimore trip, we're hoping to get crabs. ;)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Artie:

Fingers crossed for some Dazz Band, without or without pizza.
Avatar 6:12pm Matt from Springfield:

Hmm, not sure if Grotto's has scallops as a topping--but fer sure scallops (and crab, and fish and everything fruit de mer) at very many great places, at good prices!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Joe McG:

I was hoping you wouldn't leave this one out, Doug!
Avatar 6:12pm Philo Gristle:

There was a story on 60 minutes, methinks, about some entrepreneur converting silos into underground apartment buildings.

Avatar 6:15pm ndbob:

@Matt - yep - the air base in Minot is still a prime nuclear center though
Avatar 6:15pm Matt from Springfield:

@kat: I noticed you said you listen to Surface Noise archives on Mondays! I'm up commenting with it midnight to 3, but when it was from 3 to 6 I also listened to that on Mondays!
Avatar 6:15pm Philo Gristle:

@Annie Never heard of that one. I have a preference for the ones where radiation causes insect to mutate to giant size. Attack of the CRAB Monsters, perhaps. Otherwise must be Slim Pickens ridin' the rocket.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Doug Schulkind:

Even though I'm originally from Bethesda, MD, many people think I'm from Baltimore. (Eddie Murray is my Buddha.)
  6:17pm Andy S.:

Hank King backed by "Bud Williams & His Smiling Buddies." They're smiling 'cos somebody talked Hank into recording this dopey song!
Avatar 6:17pm kat330:

Yes, Matt, I see you there. Often an arrival time just after SNL ends. :) AND I saw you finally had a meet-up. Dan's a good man.
Avatar 6:18pm annie:

it is a classic shirley performance, with teri garr... and that tall guy with the hair.. a very special film :Set during the Cuban missile crisis, Waiting for the Light is an off-beat comic tale about a single mother of two (Teri Garr) who has just taken over a roadside cafe with her aunt (Shirley MacLaine), a former circus magician. MacLaine and the children pull a prank on her crotchety next-door neighbor, who is tricked into believing that the image he sees is actually an angel. Soon, the entire town believes an angel is living at Garr's diner, and eventually people come to the diner from miles around in hopes of seeing the angel.
Avatar 6:19pm Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: You know how it can be when people are out of state and not familiar with an area--in fact, it's a good thing Philly is "Filadelfia"; if it was "Piladelpia", people would confuse it and Pittsburgh! Two very different cities!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm Doug Schulkind:

@Andy S
Here's that Hank King: bit.ly...
Avatar 6:20pm Matt from Springfield:

@kat: Dan IS a good man! And Van is a good man too, though he didn't make this one. The next one we're trying for is a big, DC-area one meeting in DC around U St., and already Van has recs for a location.
Avatar 6:20pm Matt from Springfield:

David Peel!? :D
Avatar 6:20pm kat330:

Wow, annie -- we'll have to catch that one at the library. I love Teri Garr, so that should be a must-see.
Avatar 6:21pm Philo Gristle:

@annie Sounds like a double-bill for Joe Dante's wonderful Cuban Missile Crisis/Giant Monster/William Castle/Atomic Drill flick, Matinee.
Avatar 6:21pm annie:

Avatar 6:24pm kat330:

Thanks, all youse, with your Baltimore - DE beach recs! Matt, if we *should* actually make this trip, we'll have to arrange a time to meet with you and any other DCers that are available.
Avatar 6:24pm Philo Gristle:

Love this Jorge, reminding me a bit of another Jorge: Ben and Africa Brasil. And that violin sounds like whoever it was that played with Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks. Awesome!

Avatar 6:28pm Matt from Springfield:

@Philo 6:06: Oops, missed that comment--what sounded like a Criswell prediction?

And of course Plan 9 rocked! They showed a colorized version, which was new to me. A beautiful display of Ed Wood's combo of poor management and limitless passion for storytelling. The riffs were great--I'm glad I watched that alone earlier, a true masterpiece like that warrants it :)
Avatar 6:29pm glenn:

pleas drop a bomb on the donald. arts.nationalpost.com...
Avatar 6:30pm ndbob:

I found one of Ed Wood's novels online - pretty standard JD novel, with some Wood touches, such as angora sweaters
Avatar 6:30pm kat330:

@glenn: I think that thing on his head is nuke-proof, unfortunately.
Avatar 6:32pm Philo Gristle:

@Matt "Peace in the world, or the world in pieces" Not really that close since it makes sense, but Criswell could get his alignments lined up every now and when.

And glad you enjoyed it! The Tim Burton biopic was a rare case of a modern film capturing that b-movie mayhem and melancholy in a way that was really wonderful and surprising.
Avatar 6:34pm Matt from Springfield:

And I did learn about the storied history Criswell had "predicting" outside of that movie (his was a celeb cameo, y'know). And that John Breckinridge was another cross-dressing fan known as "Bunny"! Since Ed Wood had friends pretty much like that, I'm glad he cast them in his movies! :)

and Dolores Fuller, co-star of "Glen or Glenda" went on to write "Rock-a-Hula Baby" and "Do the Clam" for Elvis
Avatar 6:36pm Philo Gristle:

I'm a big fan of those loopy characters of yesteryear. They don't make them like they used to.
Avatar 6:38pm kat330:

Mingus, yes!

Bunny and Bonny -- reminding me of "Seven Psychopaths" we saw last night. Waits always with a bunny and a Shiit-zu named "Bonny." Not up to his "In Bruges" level in any sense, but some fun cinematic moments nevertheless.
Avatar 6:38pm Philo Gristle:

@Bob That's right, I forgot about that! And we're full circle back to seafood with "Do the Clam." (One of Those Songs Cramps Taught Me)
Avatar 6:38pm glenn:
