Couple of "meh" tracks [the opening track, for instance]. The last couple of tracks are amazing and very different from anything on "Loveless." The rest is pretty standard MBV which I have no issue with.

MK: Take earplugs in case the venue isn't handing them out at the door. I had heard all about how LOUD! MBV is live. I totally underestimated what the volume level would be like.

The sound was so loud the soundwaves created a breeze.

Avatar 4:25am
BadGuyZero:

I'm not sure how they went about booking these upcoming shows. When I saw them a few years ago they only played four to six shows in the U.S. They were specifically looking for venues far away from residential areas. They were also utilizing local backline at the shows so the ability for the venue to obtain an ear-bleeding PA was a consideration. I was completely surprised that they came to Dallas. Dallas doesn't get shows of that caliber very often.
Avatar 🦇 4:28am

so even with no new album they still were out playing

  4:36am
Marmalade Kitty:

how were/are your ears BGZ, do you have ears left?
Avatar 4:37am
BadGuyZero:

@Julie: Yes. They did several reunion shows in 2008 and a few a year since. They played in London a couple of Sundays ago. This past Sunday they played in Korea several hours after the release of "m b v." They play the first of three shows in Tokyo tonight [I'm not sure of the exact time difference so that first show may already be in the books]. They play a few shows in Australia in a couple of weeks. More UK shows next month then nothing until May when they play Primavera.
Avatar 🦇 4:38am
Julie:

hey! thanks slugluv!
Avatar 4:38am
BadGuyZero:

@MK: I totally destroyed my hearing. I didn't use the earplugs the venue was handing out. By the time I thought maybe I should I knew that any damage had already been done. I've had tinnitus since that show. I never had issues with ringing in my ears prior to that show.
Avatar 🦇 4:39am
Julie:

oh wow BGZ that's awful. I know we have of lot of DJ's hear with hearing damage
Avatar 4:40am
BadGuyZero:

Even the volume they were playing the music at during the set changes...it was louder than a lot of bands are playing live.

I have good days and bad days with the tinnitus. It gets worse when I get stressed out. Fortunately that doesn't happen to often.
Avatar 4:43am
BadGuyZero:

Prior to that MBV show I would say the loudest bands I'd seen were Ministry, Motorhead, Dinosaur Jr., Fireballs of Freedom and A Place To Bury Strangers [who I have seen play at levels approaching MBV loud; I've only seen them once where the power didn't go out from how loud they were].
  4:46am
meghan:

Morning FVH...... Well I have the first set planned out, other than that......
Avatar 4:47am
BadGuyZero:

I compare the MBV live volume to riding a roller coaster. You kinda fear for your life a little when it's happening but when it's over you want to go and do it again. I spent the day after the MBV show trying to make trips to see them in Denver and Seattle happen. Unfortunately airfare costs an effing fortune when you try to book three or four days before your trip so I didn't get to attend any other shows. :sad trombone:
Avatar 4:48am

Avatar 🦇 5:10am
Julie:

FVH do you mean the "college" technique of backwards instead of forwards? Some of us do it the other way
Avatar 5:15am
fred von helsing:

If you mention the last couple of songs in the set and then rewind to start from the very top of the set, it fits much better the listener's memory of how the set flowed, and the segues, and it's much easier to match the details of the DJ spiel to the specific songs. Also it's easier for the DJ to discuss the segues - the whyfors and whatnots. My 0,02€, YMMV, offer void where prohibited by tribal taboo.
Avatar 🦇 5:16am
Julie:

that sounds too much for my late night addled brain
Avatar 5:19am

TL;DR version:
Nobody remembers a set in backwards order
Avatar 5:20am

Have you played "Blue Flower" before?

Good morning, Julie and Children of the Night!
Avatar 🦇 5:20am
Julie:

and yet that's how I'm used to hearing it here
Avatar 5:22am
BadGuyZero:

But if you tune in mid-set and don't know how many songs have been played in the set you can keep count so when the set is back-announced you can figure out what a specific song was easier than if the set is front-announced.
Avatar 5:22am
fred von helsing:

When you think about an album, esp'ly a concept album, do you think about the songs in reverse order? Or forward?
Avatar 5:22am
Matt from Springfield:

Now ist the time on Dark Night vere ve FALCO!
Avatar 🦇 5:23am
Julie:

well..at this point it's not that relevant because we all have the playlist over yonder
Avatar 5:24am
Matt from Springfield:

@BGZ: Yes, the "college" or "FM" style--I've seen people use your example on here to explain why that works better. As for me, I've lived entirely in the back-announce era, so that's just how I thought it was.
Avatar 5:24am
fred von helsing:

@BGZ Very true, but that's a perspective of damage control and it shortchanges the people that grok'd the entire set from top to bottom (IMHO). Obviously having a playlist in front of you renders this all academic.
Avatar 5:27am
pierre:

Late but here, Bonjour Julie, and Darkians !
Avatar 🦇 5:28am
Julie:

morning pierre!
Avatar 5:29am
Matt from Springfield:

@FVH: Yes, all academic theory with live playlist in front of you. But if you're playing an album (concept or otherwise), you would probably have the tracklist in front of you. You can listen, feel the changes and look up info in the liner notes. The back-announce seems mainly for sound-only listeners, or those joining the set.

Anyway, that's my two cents (New Zealand $, for S&Gs), so until another day, another playlist...

Avatar 🦇 5:32am

  5:32am
Mark:

i didn't realize the whole issue of back-announcing vs. front announcing was so controversial. Mr. Von Helsing's point is the most relevant--having online playlists renders most of this discussion moot. However, back-announcing is the way to go. If you tune in in the middle of a set (as most of us do), going from back to front is the only way to get caught up. If the announcer goes front to back, you have to literally count how many tunes they name until they reach the end of the list, then count backwards to find particular songs that you're desperately trying to identify. I've never heard any announcer front-announce a set.
Avatar 5:32am
BadGuyZero:

Try figuring out what's playing on Rock & Soul Ichiban! I liked a song I'd never heard before. I was out and about so I had to text a snippet of the lyrics to myself so I could try to identify it when I got home.
  5:33am
Mark:

...and after writing "War and Peace" I got the answer to "2+2" wrong and had to re-post it!
Avatar 5:33am
Matt from Springfield:

"Against the heart"?

@FVH: Hey, that's relevant to the WFMUniverse we live in! :)
@BGZ: I thought there was an XML page you could go to for that, listing the songs played of the last few hours.
