What's the consensus on MBV ? I read a review that it's tired retreaded lame crap until the last 3 songs and then suddenly KERPOW!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18am Julie:

I haven't listened that closely yet really. I like what I've heard so far
  4:19am Marmalade Kitty:

Im going to see mbv!
Avatar 4:20am BadGuyZero:

Couple of "meh" tracks [the opening track, for instance]. The last couple of tracks are amazing and very different from anything on "Loveless." The rest is pretty standard MBV which I have no issue with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21am Julie:

@MK where you seeing them, and when?
  4:21am Marmalade Kitty:

They're playing at a venue I don't like.. I have a fear of upper circle collapse!
  4:22am Dogtooth:

Incredible song of Alison's Halo, whole album is great! Thanks for this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22am Julie:

Avatar 4:22am BadGuyZero:

MK: Take earplugs in case the venue isn't handing them out at the door. I had heard all about how LOUD! MBV is live. I totally underestimated what the volume level would be like.

The sound was so loud the soundwaves created a breeze.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23am Julie:

the shoegaze bands I had in were really loud too. It's just their way
Avatar 4:25am fred von helsing:

It might make more sense just to install vibrating chairs
  4:25am Marmalade Kitty:

I certainly will! Thanks BGZ
Avatar 4:25am BadGuyZero:

I'm not sure how they went about booking these upcoming shows. When I saw them a few years ago they only played four to six shows in the U.S. They were specifically looking for venues far away from residential areas. They were also utilizing local backline at the shows so the ability for the venue to obtain an ear-bleeding PA was a consideration. I was completely surprised that they came to Dallas. Dallas doesn't get shows of that caliber very often.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28am Julie:

so even with no new album they still were out playing
  4:28am Marmalade Kitty:

I last saw Motorhead there. That was loud enough for me..!
  4:29am meghan:

Morning everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29am Julie:

Good morning, Meghan!
Avatar 4:31am BadGuyZero:

During the holocaust coda from "You Made Me Realise" the volume kept going up and up. I could literally feel the earth shaking and my shirt was flapping in the sound breeze.

I heard they topped out at 148 decibels at that show in Dallas.
Avatar 4:32am fred von helsing:

G'morning!, got a pseudotheme cooked up ?
Avatar 4:32am fred von helsing:

@bgz that sounds unpleasant, truth be told
Avatar 4:33am slugluv1313:

lovely show (as always!), Julie!
  4:36am Marmalade Kitty:

how were/are your ears BGZ, do you have ears left?
Avatar 4:37am BadGuyZero:

@Julie: Yes. They did several reunion shows in 2008 and a few a year since. They played in London a couple of Sundays ago. This past Sunday they played in Korea several hours after the release of "m b v." They play the first of three shows in Tokyo tonight [I'm not sure of the exact time difference so that first show may already be in the books]. They play a few shows in Australia in a couple of weeks. More UK shows next month then nothing until May when they play Primavera.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38am Julie:

hey! thanks slugluv!
Avatar 4:38am BadGuyZero:

@MK: I totally destroyed my hearing. I didn't use the earplugs the venue was handing out. By the time I thought maybe I should I knew that any damage had already been done. I've had tinnitus since that show. I never had issues with ringing in my ears prior to that show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39am Julie:

oh wow BGZ that's awful. I know we have of lot of DJ's hear with hearing damage
Avatar 4:40am BadGuyZero:

Even the volume they were playing the music at during the set changes...it was louder than a lot of bands are playing live.

I have good days and bad days with the tinnitus. It gets worse when I get stressed out. Fortunately that doesn't happen to often.
Avatar 4:43am BadGuyZero:

Prior to that MBV show I would say the loudest bands I'd seen were Ministry, Motorhead, Dinosaur Jr., Fireballs of Freedom and A Place To Bury Strangers [who I have seen play at levels approaching MBV loud; I've only seen them once where the power didn't go out from how loud they were].
  4:46am meghan:

Morning FVH...... Well I have the first set planned out, other than that......
Avatar 4:47am BadGuyZero:

I compare the MBV live volume to riding a roller coaster. You kinda fear for your life a little when it's happening but when it's over you want to go and do it again. I spent the day after the MBV show trying to make trips to see them in Denver and Seattle happen. Unfortunately airfare costs an effing fortune when you try to book three or four days before your trip so I didn't get to attend any other shows. :sad trombone:
Avatar 4:48am BadGuyZero:

Good morning, Meghan!
  4:49am meghan:

  4:51am Marmalade Kitty:

open air gigs are safer for ears. I'm scared now bGZ o.O
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52am Julie:

Bring good earplugs, Mk!
  4:52am Marmalade Kitty:

..not for fish
  4:54am meghan:

MK I saw them in 1992 and they were wicked loud then. For the first 10 min they laid their guitars against their amps. I had earplugs thankfully
Avatar 4:58am fred von helsing:

de gustibus non disputandum est
Avatar 4:59am slugluv1313:

WOW!!!! *vintage* Leonard Cohen, AND Miranda Sex Garden!! way cool :)
(i know, "vintage" is WAY over-used these days, but fits here right nice, imho)
Avatar 5:03am fred von helsing:

I have an issue with how WFMU DJ's recount their sets. Maybe I should fire off an OFOFM (Old Fart to Old Fart Missive) to Ken.
Avatar 5:06am fred von helsing:

Themeless in Theattle
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10am Julie:

FVH do you mean the "college" technique of backwards instead of forwards? Some of us do it the other way
Avatar 5:15am fred von helsing:

If you mention the last couple of songs in the set and then rewind to start from the very top of the set, it fits much better the listener's memory of how the set flowed, and the segues, and it's much easier to match the details of the DJ spiel to the specific songs. Also it's easier for the DJ to discuss the segues - the whyfors and whatnots. My 0,02€, YMMV, offer void where prohibited by tribal taboo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16am Julie:

that sounds too much for my late night addled brain
Avatar 5:19am fred von helsing:

TL;DR version:
Nobody remembers a set in backwards order
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20am Matt from Springfield:

Derek Xenoaklander!
Have you played "Blue Flower" before?

Good morning, Julie and Children of the Night!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20am Julie:

and yet that's how I'm used to hearing it here
Avatar 5:22am BadGuyZero:

But if you tune in mid-set and don't know how many songs have been played in the set you can keep count so when the set is back-announced you can figure out what a specific song was easier than if the set is front-announced.
Avatar 5:22am fred von helsing:

When you think about an album, esp'ly a concept album, do you think about the songs in reverse order? Or forward?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22am Matt from Springfield:

Now ist the time on Dark Night vere ve FALCO!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23am Julie:

well..at this point it's not that relevant because we all have the playlist over yonder
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24am Matt from Springfield:

@BGZ: Yes, the "college" or "FM" style--I've seen people use your example on here to explain why that works better. As for me, I've lived entirely in the back-announce era, so that's just how I thought it was.
Avatar 5:24am fred von helsing:

@BGZ Very true, but that's a perspective of damage control and it shortchanges the people that grok'd the entire set from top to bottom (IMHO). Obviously having a playlist in front of you renders this all academic.
Avatar 5:27am pierre:

Late but here, Bonjour Julie, and Darkians !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28am Julie:

morning pierre!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29am Matt from Springfield:

@FVH: Yes, all academic theory with live playlist in front of you. But if you're playing an album (concept or otherwise), you would probably have the tracklist in front of you. You can listen, feel the changes and look up info in the liner notes. The back-announce seems mainly for sound-only listeners, or those joining the set.

Anyway, that's my two cents (New Zealand $, for S&Gs), so until another day, another playlist...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29am Matt from Springfield:

Bonjour pierre!
Avatar 5:30am fred von helsing:

"Another day, another playlist", good gracious that sounds jaded :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32am Julie:

another girl another planet?
  5:32am Mark:

i didn't realize the whole issue of back-announcing vs. front announcing was so controversial. Mr. Von Helsing's point is the most relevant--having online playlists renders most of this discussion moot. However, back-announcing is the way to go. If you tune in in the middle of a set (as most of us do), going from back to front is the only way to get caught up. If the announcer goes front to back, you have to literally count how many tunes they name until they reach the end of the list, then count backwards to find particular songs that you're desperately trying to identify. I've never heard any announcer front-announce a set.
Avatar 5:32am BadGuyZero:

Try figuring out what's playing on Rock & Soul Ichiban! I liked a song I'd never heard before. I was out and about so I had to text a snippet of the lyrics to myself so I could try to identify it when I got home.
  5:33am Mark:

...and after writing "War and Peace" I got the answer to "2+2" wrong and had to re-post it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33am Matt from Springfield:

"Against the heart"?

@FVH: Hey, that's relevant to the WFMUniverse we live in! :)
@BGZ: I thought there was an XML page you could go to for that, listing the songs played of the last few hours.
Avatar 5:35am fred von helsing:

@mark I beg to differ. If yer tardy to the party ya gotta use yer noggin during the set recount to hazard a guess of where you joined in the fun!
Avatar 5:36am fred von helsing:

I can already sense a disturbance in the Force. It's next week's Valentine Fail show. I feel a cry coming on.
Avatar 5:37am BadGuyZero:

@Matt: I've never been successful in finding a playlist aside from the ones for re-airs of Fool's Paradise and a couple of other live DJ shows.
  5:37am Mark:

Oh I don't want to fight with you! It's 5:30 in the morning for God's sake. I'm more interested in whether Julie is really wearing bunny slippers.

Didn't know it was the anniversary of Falco's death--danke for the tribute! Of *course* the Austrian friend told you, prob. a day of national mourning there!

@FVH: "goth-garage babes on the rebound"...even the adjectives here really create an amazing fantasy world :)
