evening all, from the antipodes. i've always meant to consult about finding this show phonetically challenging... given the pronunciation of "Show" and "Jarnow", why isn't "Frow" pronounced "froh"... ?

fred von helsing:

this reminds me of listening to shortwave :-D
Avatar 5:29am
fred von helsing:

waiting for Radio Tirana to chime in
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30am
jj.:

there's a long answer & a short answer. the short answer is that it's an inside joke gone amiss. the medium version is that the spelling originates from a threatening note slipped under the door of my high school radio station with the word "fro" spelled "frow," in reference to my then-becoming-long-hair. it remained a joke for a few more weeks until my friend wrote/recorded the theme on his four track. ever since then, i couldn't not use it. only after about 10 years of using it thru a college station, a pirate station, a podcast, & WFMU did i realize that a.) anybody was listening & b.) it was really, really confusing.
Avatar 5:35am
Knile:

That answers that question I've also wondered about for... years. When did you switch from just podcast to WFMU, btw? I have strong memories of 2007 being pre-WFMU (don't ask) but other than that my mind is a hairy mess of drones and psychedelia and reverb.
Avatar 5:35am
fred von helsing:

A pirate station? Do tell. Radio New York International ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39am
jj.:

ha, the podcast was 2005-2008, i think, and i started here that august. the pirate station (2000ish?) was hardly illustrious. my friend built it in his living room & broadcast out of the attic for 8 months or so until the FCC showed up.
Avatar 5:39am
ausmanx:

thanks, an answer of Garcia-like proportions! you should have cut it off half way and kept us hanging on for the final instalment next week!
Avatar 5:42am
fred von helsing:

Ya got busted by the Feds? Nice! :) I'd always read that people (in NYC) were doing crazy shit like turning antenna amps around so they could broadcast VCR movies to the neighborhood. But real pirate radio and a real bust, that's street cred :) Do you know what kind of tech they used? Was it a Python-approved Cat Detector Van?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55am
jj.:

can't remember the details. it was in the rural midwest, though. i'll ask my friend when i see him in a few months.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56am
jj.:

by the way, this is the 200th episode of the frow show on WFMU. i meant to do some kind of anniversary thingee, but i completely forgot. this reminiscing will have to do.
