	12:16am Joe McG: Hey, everybody! @Pete: I think movies like "Paper Moon" created interest in old music, so a lot got reissued. Also New World was a govt. project of the Bicentennial to reissue period American music, so a lot of cool stuff got re-ished.

	12:23am Pete from Boston (and NJ): Wow. I remember 1974's "That's Entertainment!" still being talked about a lot by the late 70s (my parents, kids of this music's era, also reinforced this). I don't know about New World Records. Looks like a lot of the kind of America-embracing everyone was doing in those days.
	12:24am Uncle Michael: I'm on the hunt online for an album that's eluding me. It's ticking me off. Holly will save me.
	12:25am Pete from Boston (and NJ): It is interesting to consider that this music, relative to the 70s, is analogous to music of the 70s to us.

	12:28am Uncle Michael: Pete, while I grew up entirely in the rock and roll era, I've been steeped in old cinema since I was a small child. I heard so much of this music in context by watching the films of the '30s and '40s that it's part of my aural DNA. I don't think I'm unusual. Not typical...but there are a lot of us.

	12:31am Uncle Michael: No, it's not that...and my frustration was mainly due to broken links and the fact that I'm so new to slsk that I forgot to look there. Looking for the first Neu! album...or better yet, the 2010 vinyl box set.
	12:32am Droll: Pete, That's a great observation: 40-year nostalgia. The difference between the 30's and 70's is smaller than 70's and 10's, if for no other reason than there used to be a shared blues influence.
	12:35am Uncle Michael: What's especially fascinating about Pete's observation is that there's some weird temporal distortions. Just in the rock era, like spans of time are not equivalent. We're in this era of rapid technological change and slowed cultural change. No one would argue that popular music changed as much 1993 to 2013 as it did from 1954 to 1974, for example.
	12:38am Pete from Boston (and NJ): I thought that right after I posted my comment -- the ease of movement of culture, for lack of a better way to put it, changes the relative meaning of time when comparing culture over time.
	12:42am Uncle Michael: Perhaps the decelerating rate of change has something to do with sort of resistance created by an ever-increasing bow wake of nostalgia combined with the increasing difficulty in doing anything truly new. Or maybe I'm just oblivious to the new.
	12:44am Uncle Michael: I look at a hundred-plus years of recorded music, consider that it's all a drop in the bucket of human history and imagine that the broad distinctions that you and I hear between Billy Murray and Mos Def might not even be discernible to a martian.
	12:45am Pete from Boston (and NJ): It's hard to say with authority how fast trends evolved and dissipated in one period relative to another, even if you'd lived through both. There is tremendous development from 1954-74, but what is the viable lifespan and development of significant artists today compared to then? Are flash-in-the-pan stars more or less common now?

	12:48am Droll: UM, The difference between 2010 and 1970 is music recordings (which compete with live musicians) became both ubiquitous and free, removing any economic incentive to make new music. The technology which should have launched the Cambrian Period of media has somehow resulted in it's extinction.

	12:49am Tome: 1974--hmm was a change happening, again like 20 years past for mainstream anyway trying to give r&b, rock to appeal to "white" radio,, ie.. Elvis( the king of rock'n'roll"?" ) then 20 years latter Disco ( to keep the funk to one beat - George clinton said it himself "disco is like making love with one stroke.." ) and the decline of mainstream FM after that ,,,
	12:52am Uncle Michael: @Droll, I was just going to make a similar point in addressing Pete. We're coming to the tail end of dinosaur legacy artists with long careers because of the phenomon that you describe. When Billy Joel's youngest fans have gone off to Hospice, it's hard to imagine there will be artists around with 30 years of viable catalog, nostalgically filling arenas with comeback tours. Will there be many artists newer than say, Radiohead that will manage that?
	12:54am Uncle Michael: Tome, AM radio in the early '70s was still a melting pot with rock, pop, rnb and c&w crossing over in every direction. Formatted and consulted radio killed that. Money dumbed down the audience.

Droll - guess why I'm not participating - once again reheating porchetta (while tossing kale, dandelions & some sort of flowering bok choy to suck up all that pork fat... ) mmm... pork fat I honestly don't think there's been a musical revolution this decade, at least in the western world. Would LOVE to be schooled.

	1:01am Pete from Boston (and NJ): I bounce around a lot between places that have cable and DTV. The very limited DTV is full of commercials for Adult Problems and a higher-than-average proportion of nostalgia stations (3 out of 18 or 19), and it's about what TV was in 1978. Cable is so infinitely broad by comparison that you never need be aware of the same world that anyone else is.
	1:01am Uncle Michael: I was in a conversation on FB yesterday that dealt with the fact that while functioning as a judge on American Idol, Mariah Carey indicated that she had never previously heard the song "She's Leaving Home."
	1:03am Pete from Boston (and NJ): I hate to say it, but I actually enjoy seeing Mariah Carey grow as a person.

I would say that if one of the biggest artist of an era of popular music only one or two generations removed from the Beatles can be oblivious to what might be the most beautiful track from what is widely considered the career high-water mark by a pair of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century can be wholly unfamiliar with it...it illustrates Pete's point about non-overlapping sets in the venn diagram of musical taste.

Pepper's from the record sublet business in our ShopRite, then had to have an argument with my friend about whether the Bee Gees that he knew from the movie or the Beatles I knew from the record did it better. I held the Beatles side, but to this day the song makes me think of the movie.

	1:15am Pete from Boston (and NJ): My first exposure to that Tommy was on a tape of the soundtrack. I got 1/2 through and then didn't finish it for years. Then I watched the movie, and I began over time to appreciate it for being an unholy mess.

	1:26am Holly in NC: For me, worst was going through the pissed-off "I spent YEARS tracking down that Stooges/Mother of Invention/etc lp - & now any fool can get the cd" stage. late 80s. Got over my collector scum bad self just in time to appreciate mp3s ;-) Now I'm just amused that most (rockish) hot shit new reissues I still consider new myself, they're cds from the '90s for christsake! (cf dump) Oh, Ajax, Your Flesh, where have you gone? Bucketful of Brains. Forced Exposure. :-( Thank God for Ugly Things, really.

	1:50am Holly in NC: @droll - one of my very most prized possessions is a 3rd generation cassette copy of BDP's Criminal Minded, made for me in 1987 by a hometown friend who couldn't believe I was hip enough to like. Took me 'til 1990 to find a cdR copy here in Durham - yeah cdR, boot only in a wildly sketchy (& long gone) record & incense store. Now of course have a pristine mp3 copy. Not the same, & I'll never, ever get rid of that lovingly copied cassette.

I don't know about New World Records. Looks like a lot of the kind of America-embracing everyone was doing in those days.

	12:28am Uncle Michael: Pete, while I grew up entirely in the rock and roll era, I've been steeped in old cinema since I was a small child. I heard so much of this music in context by watching the films of the '30s and '40s that it's part of my aural DNA. I don't think I'm unusual. Not typical...but there are a lot of us.

	12:32am Droll: Pete, That's a great observation: 40-year nostalgia. The difference between the 30's and 70's is smaller than 70's and 10's, if for no other reason than there used to be a shared blues influence.
	12:35am Uncle Michael: What's especially fascinating about Pete's observation is that there's some weird temporal distortions. Just in the rock era, like spans of time are not equivalent. We're in this era of rapid technological change and slowed cultural change. No one would argue that popular music changed as much 1993 to 2013 as it did from 1954 to 1974, for example.

	12:42am Uncle Michael: Perhaps the decelerating rate of change has something to do with sort of resistance created by an ever-increasing bow wake of nostalgia combined with the increasing difficulty in doing anything truly new. Or maybe I'm just oblivious to the new.
	12:44am Uncle Michael: I look at a hundred-plus years of recorded music, consider that it's all a drop in the bucket of human history and imagine that the broad distinctions that you and I hear between Billy Murray and Mos Def might not even be discernible to a martian.

There is tremendous development from 1954-74, but what is the viable lifespan and development of significant artists today compared to then? Are flash-in-the-pan stars more or less common now?

We're coming to the tail end of dinosaur legacy artists with long careers because of the phenomon that you describe. When Billy Joel's youngest fans have gone off to Hospice, it's hard to imagine there will be artists around with 30 years of viable catalog, nostalgically filling arenas with comeback tours. Will there be many artists newer than say, Radiohead that will manage that?
	12:54am Uncle Michael: Tome, AM radio in the early '70s was still a melting pot with rock, pop, rnb and c&w crossing over in every direction. Formatted and consulted radio killed that. Money dumbed down the audience.

The very limited DTV is full of commercials for Adult Problems and a higher-than-average proportion of nostalgia stations (3 out of 18 or 19), and it's about what TV was in 1978. Cable is so infinitely broad by comparison that you never need be aware of the same world that anyone else is.

I would say that if one of the biggest artist of an era of popular music only one or two generations removed from the Beatles can be oblivious to what might be the most beautiful track from what is widely considered the career high-water mark by a pair of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century can be wholly unfamiliar with it...it illustrates Pete's point about non-overlapping sets in the venn diagram of musical taste.

Pepper's from the record sublet business in our ShopRite, then had to have an argument with my friend about whether the Bee Gees that he knew from the movie or the Beatles I knew from the record did it better.
