This week:
Mild Mannered Rebel deftly blends instrumentation and musical influences from leader Mavrothi Kontanis' northern Greek roots with English-language lyricism. Today's semi-plugged FMU session is an early tune up for a big record release gig, celebrating the band's debut disc Ear to the Sky, at East Village nightspot Drom on Friday April 26th.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I formally do *not* dislike Richard Thompson. : ) Not one tiny little bit. See him live boys & girls. He's the real thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Uncle Michael:

He's a monster. I would love to see him live. Bucket listed.

...I always imagine the British responding to the advent of Yank FolkRock: "Oh - so you're interested in *'Folk Music'* -we just might have some of that lying around here someplace..." ; )
- Of course Dylan & Paul Simon had been in Britain quite early on...

I know oud from a Tukish (style - Americans) band in Santa Barbara, CA (I lived there) ;
- seems like it has a wide (geographic) range?
- Lots of stringed instruments have double-strings - called 'courses' - ?
Avatar 6:47pm fleep:

The neurochemical rush from music is a real event and can be highly addictive. I can see how someone who thrives on vibrations going into withdrawl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I self-identify as a MusicJunkie, no question about it - !
- W/ new Technology, there is finally research on Music & the Brain - check books by Oliver Sachs & Daniel J. Levitin.
  6:50pm Barba Yiorgi:

Hi Revolution- yeah oud is played in most Middle Eastern countries- from Iraq through North Africa. It's unfretted and can play the microtones of Middle Eastern music. The Greek version of oud is a Laouto but it has frets and intonation is more European sounding
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Rob Weisberg:

Thanks Barba Yiorgi for the background!
  6:55pm Barba Yiorgi:

Bouzouki and Baghlama are the two most common Greek folk string instruments, Like Middle Eastern instruments it has as you wrote, "courses", pairs of strings, 2 strings each tuned either in unison or an octave apart. The little Baghlama you heard Mavrothi play has 3 courses tuned usually D-A-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...altho' I'm not sure how much those authors get into chemistry: Sachs more about Pathology (people who get hit by lightnting & become concert pianists, for eg.s) & Levitin what even goes on in the brain w/ music in the 1st place - brainscan research & such.
...I'd certainly be interested to know about Music & Dopamine & the Pleasure Centers - endophins &tc.
- but Levitin makes point that maybe Music engages more dif. parts of the brain @ once than anything else?? (Aha!)

- Thx BY!
Avatar 7:03pm Sigurdur:

fucking beautiful
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

D-A-D
- like the IrishTrad guitarists - following Davy Graham (back only to the 1960's!)
- use D-A-D-G-A-D - ?

- 'Spanish' or 'Standard' *Guitar* tuning is E-A-D-G-B-E
- whereas Violin - & all things like it? - are G-D-A-E - I think!

...altho' Guitar in History was never Respectable (before Segovia) - ! Bach wrote for Lute or Cello, not Guitar! Guitar was - to paraphrase Austin Powers - like the Village Bicycle - everybody's had a ride! : p - so the idea of a 'Standard' tuning is perhaps historically inappropriate.
- In the American South - poor AfricanAmericans would take the wire off a broom, nail it into their shacks, & use a glass as a slide - & this was the 'Didley Bow' - hence 'Bo Didley'...Slide players often use Alternate Tunings - &tc. &tc. ...

Wow, that Brasilian title is some local Brasilian lingo, haven't had to think about *that* in awhile. Vapor de Cachoeira is easy, means "Waterfall Mist."

Quixabeira is a place near Bahia, the oldest and most really African city in Brasil.

Lagoa da Camisa means "Shirt Pond" or "Shirt Lagoon". I'm figuring it must be a very locally known place in Bahia that has a waterfall with mist :) -- I haven't been in Bahia since my senior trip. (I did my senior year of h.s. in São Paulo)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm G:
