Brooklyn-based singer and setar player Mohsen Namjoo is one of Iran's most popular performers. But his songs have upset musical purists by mixing Persian classical traditions with popular styles like rock, blues and jazz. And his daring lyrical content really upset the Iranian government, which sentenced him, in absentia, to five years in prison. We'll get the story from Mohsen - and he'll give us a bit of intimate live performance. We'll also meet Rachel Cooper of the Asia Society who to talks about the Society's new Iran Modern exhibition and a sister series of concerts, New Sounds From Iran, that kicks off with a show by Namjoo later tonight.
Then, filmmmaker Adam Pogoff Joins us for a musical sampling of his new documentary Brasslands, which follows New York's Zlatne Uste Balkan Brass Band as it travels to a legendary brass band festival in Serbia. Brasslands will be shown alongside performances by Frank London and the Sazet Band at Drom in the East Village on Sunday evening September 22, as part of this fall's ninth annual NY Gypsy Festival.
