A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar 11:40am

you could say a lot of musicians are the Jimmy Buffet of whatever. But that happens all over the place. I don't stop looking at Van Gogh paintings or Charlie Chaplin movies just because you see them referenced everywhere. Doesn't make Marley's music any less good or valid--but I think that's what trouble was getting at...
  11:40am
timotato:

Speaking of Brasilian, I'm so psyched that Marisa Monte is playing the Beacon in late June. My fave of faves!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am
Ike:

Isn't it just the "Legend" hits CD that represents the Jimmy Buffet realm of reggae? Those songs ("No Woman No Cry" etc.) are all horribly burnt out from intense overplaying, but fortunately Bob Marley did a lot of other good, mostly forgotten songs like the one Trouble just played.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am
Patrick:

good morning trouble! great show this morning, although the last hour i have drowned out with the vacuum... bummer about the cavity!
Avatar 11:45am
Pete from Boston (and NJ):

Calling Bob Marley the Jimmy Buffet of reggae has the unfortunate concurrent result of conversely making Jimmy Buffet the Bob Marley of whatever it is he does, so, no.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I esp. like old poorly-recorded ska, Studio One type stuff & Dub - it's like the Jamaican equivalent of GarageRock...Who hasn't been touched by Bob Marley?

- The first difference between the Commercial World & WFMU-type thinking is that there are in fact more than 30 songs for maximum rotation in the world
- but most people think no more about their Music Diet than they care about eating anything besides Fast Food: What they *like* about their musical choices is that they do *not* have to think about them - they take what they're fed...
Avatar 11:50am
robyn:

well, jimmy buffett is the embodiment of a certain white middle class unconsciousness. which is pretty impressive if not necessarily self-aware.
Avatar 11:50am
Pete from Boston (and NJ):

I have only had one confirmed cavity, and nobody noticed it through a whole bunch of regular dental visits until it was so far gone that they weren't sure if I'd need a root canal. Still baffles me.

Sometimes I think there's a threshold at which you're just required to pay for extra dentistry even if you don't need it, and they just make something up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am
Trouble:

hello patrick!!hello emily!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am
Parq:

I remember white kids in Boston bars in the 70s, dancing effetely to white bands playing reggae, so none of the current adoption of reggae by the Parrotheads surprises me at all.
Avatar 11:51am
Rev. Turnip Druid:

Let's be fair: Jimmy Buffett was always the Emma Goldman of Charlie Chaplin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am
Ike:

Then Pete, let's just say you can Buffet-ize certain Marley hits through intense Chinese-water-torture-like overplaying, but you can't Marley-ize any Buffet songs. Such destruction only goes one way.
  11:52am
Ralphine:

God bless you for playing Open Sesame. Feel the power and the spirit of the genie!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I kind of make a distinction between 'Real Reggae' & 'Tourist Reggae' - if you get my meaning. Young people in Jamaica aren't esp. into Bob or Reggae now anyhow, from what I understand (which might not be much)...
Avatar 11:53am
dc pat:

to me it's like "the blues"--you can go out and find a lame "reggae" group any day of the week, but to actually find somebody doing something unique and/or good, takes some leg-work. It's REALLY hard to go see a good blues performance because of the Jimmy Buffettization of blues.
Avatar 11:54am

RTD: not sure it's legal to use those 3 names in the same sentence..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am

what do you think is worse? parrotheads embracing bob marley, or 2 generations of dirty flip flop wearing undergrads thinking he is some kinda cultural leader?
Avatar 11:55am
Rev. Turnip Druid:

Thanks to the overplaying of Marley, I deliberately refused to give any of that stuff a chance. Then Scientist/Tubby busted that for good. But then, I'm a no-vocal kind of freak.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am
Parq:

Dig you, DCP. I call that "college-town blues", because it's what's heard in bars in the New Paltzes and South Bends of the country.
