Favoriting May 8, 2013: WAX IDOLS and TV GHOST live sets!

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Oakland's Wax Idols have an intense post-punk sound that might remind you of Joy Division or Siouxsie & the Banshees -- no surprise, since both bands are longtime favorites of the band's primary singer and songwriter, Hether Fortune. Their outstanding debut single and LP both landed on EFD's Best Of 2011 list and they've just released their second full-length, Discipline & Desire (Slumberland) which somehow improves on their debut. Fortune says that her strongest songwriting influences in recent years are Daniel Ash and Wire, but Wax Idols have their own sound that defies genres, among other things.

You'll also hear a live set from Wax Idols' tourmates, TV Ghost. These Indiana art-punkers have been putting out one killer record after another, with each one seemingly scarier (in a good way) than the one before it. TV Ghost sit somewhere on the spectrum between Goblin and Lightning Bolt, and the Dario Argentos of the future would do well to hire TV Ghost for their next soundtrack. They have a new full-length coming out soon on In The Red that will include the songs they played on the show.

I noticed the boldface makeover mistake too, I wonder if any other webpage, even with an active audience, would've gotten a dozen emails or private messages, funny that on FMU we can just have EFD shoot out an email, whilst in the middle of doing a radio show... sometimes the terrestrial/internet mashup of the FMU community kinda blows my mind

OMG, Droll is gonna drag me back to alt.music.yes circa 95.

My answer in those debates was: they're two different stylists that are great at what they do. Bruford does so many things that White doesn't, but White fits the harder or more straightforward rock numbers in the Yes repertoire.

And now I step back to await the customary outraged contradiction that comes no matter which of them someone backs or what reasons are given :)

- yeah - I think steve & I were chatting about that during - Lamin's Program? I advised to think of Jazz as Blues for people who play too well...Ya gotta Swing & Improvise in Jazz too, though, as well as have mad Technique. In other words: Something to say. In other words: Artistic Sensibilities.

For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure Dazzle Ships was billed just to OMD in '83. New record is pretty uniformly wonderful; delighted to hear you playing it!

@john That's funny, I didn't realize that! Or remember it. One or the other.

RRN, "Play too well"? Pay too well for what? Is that why Mariah's career dried up? Sang too well?

...weeks ago I remarked here it sounded like someone had put L in the Mods' punchbowl for a bit
...hardly seems worth noting now! (Not that I've known this Program a really long time.)

I cannot overstate how perplexing it is when amateurism is conflated with sincerity. You do realize even those punk guys in the 70's got good because they played every night for years. PIL is what happened when punk learned to play.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Droll: Put it this way: Billie Holiday described herself as having only seven notes in her range - but she's my favorite Singer. Mariah has possibly a record-breaking range of notes, but if she had never existed I wouldn't have noticed.

FOODFIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- well yeah - for that matter, the business about the Sex Pistols 'not being able to play' is - erm - bollocks. They were a mighty & muscular RockBand. W/ a brilliant lyricist&frontman what's more.
- That's one thing I like about that Pollock quote: It doesn't negate Technique, but it does assert it's only a Means to an End.

Easy to say for a guy who splatters paint. Next you'll want me to believe pressing the spacebar on a laptop is a form of self-expression.

You people do realize that Pollock quote is total bullsh*t, particularly when taken out of context, don't you? Hopeless angry alcoholics say the darnedest things.

...it doesn't make any difference if the Technique is splattering paint, pressing a spacebar, or plunking a cheap productionline guitar.
- What makes it Art is if something relevant is being said.
