The fastest, loudest drummer I ever saw was some jazz dinosaur who barely moved. All in the wrists, played with both ends of the stick. Unbelievably loud bombs.

His drum solo on Flute Thing is remarkable in that it mirrors much of the melody -- yes, I know, no solos, so how about his use of all sorts of percussive elements -all by his lonesome- on Steve's Song?

	10:04pm Michael from the Left Coast: John--Alex Van Halen is totally underrated--that shifting beat in Finish What You Started is pretty great. If I recall correctly, many of the Van Halen records were recorded with just snare drum and cymbals while the rest were electronic drums

	10:05pm G: Weren't the Doobie Brothers in part someone in the music industry's attempt to replace the hole left by the end of CCR? (yes, I'm instigating) I recall a UK music paper reviewer complaining about heavy the promotion of them was to the music press at the time of "Listen to the Music".

Of course, Ennio Morricone is the world's greatest living composer.

	10:14pm G: @UM: Well, I am recalling a review from forty years ago that I haven't seen since, but I think the reviewer's core beef was not bad production or musicianship but that he felt the material was deliberately primarily commercial and meant to fill a market niche (that CCR had identified and then abandoned) -- this was in the era when the US music industry was recentralizing in CA, with the whiff of Hollywood commercialism which that seemed to some to carry...

I also think he was the model for Ratso Rizzo

	10:42pm G: Yes, that first Wakeman solo album is the only album I can think of from the early 70s where the never-ending YesFolk debate of White v. Bruford can be engaged in based on the same studio album. Five of the six tracks are White or Bruford, and the first and second tracks are a great example of each.

	11:03pm kevin g: Not a drummer myself, but would like to say that I've always been crazy about Janet Weiss, especially on the last two Sleater-Kinney records. Always in some way weird and interesting but also always catchy and worth listening to on any of those songs.
