Hiya Tony. Hangin' around, catching up with work, waiting for the hiss.
Avatar 11:54am
Kay:

DO throw a hissy fit.
Avatar 11:55am
Tony Coulter:

Heya, Carmichael and Kay! Today's show, actually, will be hiss-free, as I'm playing CD-Rs only. So maybe I should call it "CD-R Crackle"?
Avatar 11:57am
fleep:

Truth in advertising. It don't mean piss if it ain't got that hiss.
Avatar 11:57am
Tony Coulter:

Plus, fair warning: This show will feature me putting on silly voices.

Tony, you can email me the info and I can enter it.

Thanks, Doug -- but it seems to be working better now.

I bet the original recording was on tape, so "tru DAT".

Ha! Right you are, Kay!

hi tony et al
Avatar 12:11pm
Tony Coulter:

Heya, Duke!
Avatar 12:13pm
Tony Coulter:

CD-R's are much more ephemeral than cassettes. This Rascal Reporters thing is a double CD-R semi-boot from 2000 -- already the first disc doesn't play, despite being scratch-free.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm
DCE:

I really have to buckle down and back up all my CDRs soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm
Uncle Michael:

So what're we talkin' here, Tony...Behringer Virtualizer 3D?
Avatar 12:17pm
Tony Coulter:

@ DCE: The worst is when they have glued-on labels. Whoever invented those things should be shot.

@ Uncle Michael! Heya! 'Fraid your tech talk is flying way over my head. What is a BV 3D?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
Uncle Michael:

I was making a wildass guess at what you're using for funny voices.
Avatar 12:20pm
Tony Coulter:

Ah, that! Nah -- it's all pretty low tech. And gives me a sore throat pretty quickly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm
Jeff Golick:

When does the hissing of summer playlists start?
Avatar 12:23pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey Jeff G! Meaneth you the summer schedule? In early June, methinks. "Course that doesn't apply to us here on GtDR, as we'll all be staying put.

It's a toilet paper roll, right?

Greeting X 3, Tony and TC posse! Rascal Reporters do not fail to enchant.

Heya, Jeremy! You've gotten past the bouncer, I'm glad to see!

I almost tripped jumping over those velvet ropes but once you're inside it's totally worth all the humiliation.
Avatar 12:34pm
Carmichael:

I can see how that would hurt ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm
Uncle Michael:

This is good. This isn't 10cc...right?
Avatar 12:36pm
Tony Coulter:

Nope -- bedroom recordings by someone who never released anything until years after the fact, then only on CD-R.

DARK STAR MAN:

Hi Tony,
just tuned in to see what condition your old CDRs are in!
Avatar 12:44pm
Tony Coulter:

Hola, Dark Star Man! They're still holding up -- but not for long.
Avatar 12:47pm
DARK STAR MAN:

so did John Tabacco had something to with Frank Zappa?
Avatar 12:49pm
Tony Coulter:

He didn't -- but he certainly absorbed a lot of Frank.
Avatar 12:51pm
DARK STAR MAN:

bit of Todd Rundgren in there to my ears!
Avatar 12:52pm
Carmichael:

Yep, I definitely hear Zappa, maybe some TR as well.
Avatar 12:53pm
Tony Coulter:

Agreed.
Avatar 12:54pm
Carmichael:

And by TR I mean early Utopia, with Moogy Klingman, Siegel and Powell.
Avatar 12:55pm
Tony Coulter:

If this stuff had been properly released back when he was recording it, I think he'd be somewhat well-known by now. Shame it slipped through the cracks.
Avatar 1:00pm
Tony Coulter:

By properly released, I mean released at all -- but particularly if it had come out on vinyl.

conrad:

Like a somewhat more proggy Steely Dan.
Avatar 1:07pm
Tony Coulter:

Hola, Conrad! Kinda see what you mean!
Avatar 1:13pm
Carmichael:

This is amazing stuff, Tony. How did you hear about him?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm
Jeff Golick:

This quote from the page Carmichael linked to above is fascinating:

KM: How do you think the music industry will change with in the next ten years?
JT: No one will be able to own music any more. You will just rent it and pay for it continually. You will not be able to make copies of music and you will pay a fee for creating your own music because in order for people to hear it (other than playing out) you will have to have it uploaded to the "Cloud". No more CDs only ipod / iphone type devices. The computers we have now (like the one I’m typing on) will be slowly phased out and made illegal.
Avatar 1:16pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Carmichael: Just fortuitously stumbled on his stuff while trolling CD Baby.
Avatar 1:18pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Jeff G: That does seem disturbingly accurate (except for the making computers illegal part).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm
Jeff Golick:

@Tony C: Right? I just kind of nodded my head as I read it.... Like, it's not paranoia if they're really out to get you.

I'd like to hear his earlier stuff mentioned in the article Carmichael linked.
Avatar 1:29pm
Tony Coulter:

Ditto! (hey there, NGH!)
Avatar 1:55pm
Tony Coulter:

Kevin Harrison did release stuff on vinyl -- he has a 1981 LP on Cherry Red, for example -- but he has a boatload of unreleased material, such as what's on the CD-R we're hearing now. It may be obtainable from him -- not sure. He's from the U.K., by the way.
Avatar 1:55pm
DARK STAR MAN:

Yer man!
this is it - raga and drone music!

hey man its like an alternative soundtrack to 2001 or Aguire!
Avatar 2:00pm

2001, the Wrath of Aguire?
Avatar 2:01pm
DARK STAR MAN:

in fact very like Popol Vuh without the backwards effects etc.

@ Aguirrel: "Kasper Hauser" is my fave.
Avatar 2:09pm

@Aguirre! - Encounters at the End of the World. A guy I used to work with is in it. I didn't work with him at the South Pole though.
Avatar 2:10pm

Actually Tony, as an orthodox Jew, we are taught from youth that o stands for others and must not be written in the name G d as He is One only!

thanks Tony/Duke,

This is great stuff, Tony!
Avatar 2:12pm

Rich! Greets...
  2:13pm
MrFab:

Hi all, hey Tony, beautiful stuff. Too bad this wasn't released - I was a big fan of this kind of Eno/Frippery back in the day, I would have gladly spent my after-school chores money on this..
Avatar 2:13pm
Aguirre!:

besides Popol Vuh love of mine Kevin Harrison reminds me of Krautrock band Between.
Have a soft spot for them.

Hello Tony!
Been listening mostly in the background to my chaotic day...
Too tied up to comment until now.

DCE:

this is great!
Avatar 2:16pm
Carmichael:

Totally spacey. Makes me want to stare dumbly at something.
Avatar 2:17pm
Aguirre!:

further reminds me of the kind of stuff you would find in Ultima Thule shop and magazine.
Situated in Leicester, UK they formed their own bands to play blissed out experimental electronic rock, and the shop was/is stocked full of Krautrock etc
Avatar 2:17pm
Tony Coulter:

Heya, Mr. Fab. He does have some bonafide releases, though, that are well worth seeking out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm
Rich in Washington:

@MrFab:Me too. Love this kind of stuff. Also really dig some of Steve Hillage's stuff. His Rainbow Dome Music is a really good companion to Fripp's loopy music.
Avatar 2:19pm
Tony Coulter:

Here is Harrison's "official" discography: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 2:21pm
Carmichael:

I met Steve Hillage at a party, and didn't know who he was at the time. Uncomfortable looks all around, and a good talking-to later ...
  2:22pm
MrFab:

Steve Hillage: one of those names I've heard for years, and never checked out. I guess I thought he was more of a New Age/Pink Floyd/Grateful Dead kinda figure. Or, should I say, more hippy-dippy than Frippy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm
DCE:

haha, Carm, you got HILLAGED
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm
Rich in Washington:

Yeah, no doubt he's considerably more hippy-dippy than Frippy, but the aforementioned Rainbow Dome Music is really pretty incredible. Nothing like his Gong or rather Floydian regular solo LPs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm
Rich in Washington:

@Carmichael: HA! That's funny! I've had a few similar experiences with semi-famous people at radio station events. Sometimes there's this thing that you note in retrospect as bewilderment on the part of the semi-famous person because you didn't pester them, ask them the usual questions, etc...
  2:28pm
MrFab:

Like when R. Crumb was on the Antique Phonograph show recently, and semi-jokingly said: "What, you're not gonna ask me about Keep on Truckin, or Janis Joplin?!"
  2:29pm
Guitar as synthesizer:

Who influenced Fripp/Eno prior to No Pussyfooting?
  2:31pm
MrFab:

I think they go the tape-delay idea from Terry Riley.
Avatar 2:33pm
Tony Coulter:

Certainly true. Mebbe also some of the krautrock guys like Achim Reichel and Manuel Göttsching were an influence too? Dunno.
Avatar 2:35pm
Tony Coulter:

If they were, though, I've never seen anyone talk about it.
Avatar 2:36pm
Carmichael:

It was more of the looks from the crowd around us. A guy told me later, "Steve Hillage is a GOD!!" It was Greek to me ...
Avatar 2:41pm
Tony Coulter:

Made you feel over the hill(age)?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm
Rich in Washington:

Yeah, Eno publicly acknowledged the Riley tape loop connection, then he taught it to Fripp.
Now every damn kid with a looper pedal wants to be Godspeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm
Rich in Washington:

Did Steve Reich's phased loops predate Terry Riley's work?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm
DCE:

it certainly is very easy to do stuff these days than in those days
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm
DCE:

that sentence was poorly structured. apologies!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm
Uncle Michael:

Meetings. gah.
Avatar 2:47pm
Tony Coulter:

Meetings with unremarkable men?
Avatar 2:47pm
Tony Coulter:

(No need to answer that.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm
Rich in Washington:

You hit the nail on the head, though, DCE.
If you think about it, studio experimentation was really out of reach for most people. Now you can build an entire BBC Radiophonics Workshop in your computer with VST plugins, etc...
It's nice to see this leveling of the play-field in terms of access to tools but it seems to have diluted the stream somewhat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm
Rich in Washington:

I see on Wikipedia, it says Riley was using tape loops in the 1950s. Lots of people were composing for tape but maybe he's the first to use loops as a regular technique?
Reich's experiments were in the mid-Sixties.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm
Rich in Washington:

Oh, I ran across this today: t.co... Musique Concrète for Beginners: Clarence Dwyer's 1971 Book "Composing With Tape Recorders"
Avatar 2:53pm
northguineahills:

Awesome stuff, Tony. Thanks!
Avatar 2:54pm
Tony Coulter:

I think the French musique concrete guys (Pierre Schaeffer & Pierre Henry) used tape loops before Riley, but not so systematically.
Avatar 2:55pm
Tony Coulter:

Would love to see that book, Rich!
