...Just saw Mel Brooks on 'American Masters' PBS - & I picture the Chops' singer as him...

Thanks all - though I continue to be amazed at how fast my basic skill set erodes...

Martha! It's great to hear you live: I like not knowing what's next.
Any chance of having you back with the next schedule?

Apparently in my friends PBS broadcast area the Mel Brooks show was pre-empted by Garrison Keiller. I could hear my friend yelling from 3 states away.

Great show, Martha.

Irwin played a track by Klaatu you would swear was Muppet-related. Like Mel Brooks - prob. just a subconscious point of reference most of us just carry around...

Parq:

I remember watching the original Sesame Street episodes with I was in HS. I understand that CTW is now obliged to put warnings on DVDs of those shows that they are for adults only, because they show awful things like grown-ups smoking and kids eating junk food. Sigh.
Avatar 4:48pm
braveness23:

B23 here! What is this ruckus I am listing to?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm
Andrew Waterloo:

@Parq, I own both DVDs and I'd say the warnings are more to do with the hostile behaviour, the name calling, and things like kids going home with their teachers.

Reverend, was that Schoolhouse Rock your were thinking of?? Peter Max looking graphics, with numbers morphing all over and hip soul chicks singing "1-2-3 four five, 6-7-8 nine ten, 11 TWELVE!"
Avatar 5:06pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

very school-of Peter Max, but it ran in Sesame Street. I believe these were the days before Grover morphed into SuperGrover. We were such charmed young'uns.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm
Andrew Waterloo:

The Pinball machine and the Ladybugs picnic. I believe it's the Pointer Sisters on the vocals for the Pinball machine. There's a Youtube video that compiles every scene.

Ladybugs Picnic was a gas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm

I don't find the new Sesame Street that much different. It's a little more directed toward preschoolers, but they're also still willing to take on some tough topics like Big Bird losing his nest in a hurricane.
Avatar 5:11pm
Carmichael:

Thanks for the link, BP. That is exactly as I remember it. Druid, you still have some grey cells. Congratulations!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm
Mike East:

Sesame Street got more Elmo-centric in recent years, and that annoyed me...also seemed to be trying to sell more toys and sesame street related products.
Avatar 5:13pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

I guess it's nice that the show takes on modern "hard times" stuff but it's a bit disappointing.

I was told they made the hairy elephant freak (snuffleupagus, or whatever) visible to humans because they were concerned about kids having the courage to tell people if they've been abused (he was big-bird's invisible friend at first) -- and cookie monster mellowed-out his binge lifestyle due to "childhood obesity" or whatever. Sad.
  5:16pm
Martha:

Wow - am feeling as though I really missed out - tho' I was def. around for that earlier Sesame Street - I think my parents objected to it's being too didactic, not to, uh, ?threatening/hostile?
Avatar 5:17pm
Carmichael:

My parents used it as a babysitting/calming device.
Avatar 5:17pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

Sesame Street & Electric Company were hot jams in my day. I remember being totally creeped & put off by Mr. Rogers....and his "neighborhood..."

it was Friendly Giant that terrified me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm

I think the Elmocentricity happened shortly after Jim Henson died.
Avatar 5:19pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

and of course LIDSVILLE was a total game-changer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm
Mike East:

@ngh - after that whole tickle me elmo craze, it got outta hand. I don't know if you've watched, but the "Elmo's World" segment takes up about 15 minutes...and its pretty uncreative by their old standards, imo. But yes, you're right. Jim Henson's death definitely had an impact on the whole enterprise.

I always got a weird vibe from those Elmo/Frugal Gourmet PBS fundraisers. In retrospect, my gut was right.

I thought Mr. Rogers was v. boring - it took him so long to do the shoes and cardigan drill at the beginning and the end of the show - and he always sang the same thing!
Avatar 5:25pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

Thank Cthulhu I was too old & out of the Sesame Street scene by the time Elmo hatched. I would have probably grown up to kill everyone.
Avatar 5:26pm
Cecile:

I was more into the Friendly Giant.
Avatar 5:28pm
Carmichael:

Christopher Guest does a great spoof of Mr. Rogers on the National Lampoon album That's Not Funny, That's Sick. He interviews a hungover rock star, and later gets the crap beaten out him by the dads in the neighborhood, who think he's a perv.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I'm glad I just didn't have access to the new Sesame Street and my daughter was more than happy with things like Backyardigans, Peep, Tiny Planets, old Thomas the Train and Chapi Chapo.

The comments for this show started with Mel Brooks references. and his voice was in Electric Company animations, including the one that came to a satisfyingly profound end with, I think, the line, "Would someone tell Mr. Smith his hat is in the onion dip."
