@AndrewC
It used to be .../Doug, but the WFMU's whole playlist database just got overhauled and my old playlist were migrated onto a new set-up, thus the new .../DS url. (I realize I described that pitifully.) The old .../Doug still works, it just transfers you to the new directory or somesuch. Still stuck with the same old me, however.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Jeff Golick:

There's a great anecdote in a long and long-ago New Yorker profile of Ang Lee. Lee was trying to get his screenwriter to make some family scenes "more Chinese." The screenwriter, who was Jewish, had no idea how to do this, so just made the family encounters as typically Jewish as he could. Lee came back and said something like, "Yes, you have really captured it now."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Doug Schulkind:

"Brace yourself for a very funny Ang Lee anecdote" is itself a very funny anecdote.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Doug Schulkind:

Coming up next is an amazing sort of free-style rapping/dozens playing/call-and-response duet performance from Brazil that just blows me away. I'm not sure if this style is particular to the performers (Geraldo Mousinho & Cachimbino) or if it is a wider style. If the latter, I have yet to find anyone other than these two performing it.

one of THE great records. ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Doug Schulkind:

"My Rainbow Race" was performed by Nilsen and a crowd of more than 40,000 people in Youngstorget in Oslo and at squares across the country on April 26, 2012, as a protest against statements given in court by Anders Behring Breivik, the perpetrator of the July 22 attacks in 2011. The performance was inspired by Facebook reactions after Breivik claimed in his trial testimony that the song was an example of Marxist propaganda and that it was being used to "brainwash" Norwegian children. Organization was made at the level of Norwegian Minister of Culture, and other Ministers [of Culture] from Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands were also present. The song was thus performed a few days later, in the midst of the ongoing trial. In Oslo the sing-along was followed by a march up to the site of the trial, where the crowd laid down flowers. The song was performed both in Norwegian and English, and Nilsen had personally contacted Seeger, who responded with the words: "Oh me, oh my. I wish you luck." (Wikipedia)
Avatar 9:54am ausmanx:

ah, mention of Breivik reminds me that he quoted our Australian conservative Prime Minister John Howard as a policy model in his manifesto. one of Howard's great legacies. (he will forever be known as "the lying rodent", as the Opposition leader referred to him in parliament).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Doug Schulkind:

George Brandis admits to calling him a rodent, but not a lying rodent. He says Howard was a "truthful rodent." (Do I have that right?)
Avatar 10:00am ausmanx:

one of Brandis' colleagues swore a statement that he used "lying". it seems pretty likely! Brandis will be our next Attorney-General, sigh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Doug Schulkind:

I will forever be smitten with your current PM. And not just because she's a redhead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Hugo:

In my language, it is known as "Barn av regnbuen" - children of the rainbow. I wasn't aware that it was a cover of a Pete Seeger song, though. The artist in question was Lille-Bjørn Nilsen. A huge hit in this country back in the early 70s.
Avatar 10:04am ausmanx:

sadly she's been disgraceful enough in her own way (though nothing like your own incumbent). her refugee policy, which was what Breivik admired in Howard, is not so different

To answer your earlier question: The songs that play during the stream's automated default mode are nor individually selected. I have programmed the software to select tracks from specific folders and programmed it to play from a rotation of folders, but the tracks themselves are essentially random (though there are parameters about how often a particular track, artist or album can be played within a certain period of time.)

Ken played a track this week with intensively autotuned vocal by Big Blood daughter. Interesting, and my reflexive autotune recoil was soon suppressed. Suggestions of Arabic style and melisma in the effect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am KevinfromBayRidge:

@Hugo, Sorry I was away from the Comments ( BAD BAD work!!). Yeah BR has gotten much more diverse but it's still a "too white" 'hood but that's with a very loose definition. I do know a few old-family Norseman (& Norsewomen!). My guestimate on ethnicity would be: 20% Italian (leaving off "-American"); 20% Asian;15% Arabic;15% Greek;10% Irish;20% Other(including me!).Over in Sunset Park, there were some Scandanavian bars on 8th Ave up until about 10 years ago, but became totally incongruent to the venue and are sadly relics now.

Shorthand without corrupting language? And that study demonstrating readability without vowels?

(Hiya. Quietly listening.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am davex:

@Doug: Thanks, I was thinking that it would be a lot of work to select every track all the time. I suppose other functions could still work automatically with that system with a bit of tweaking.

@Brian in UK: I didn't realize vowels were out of style. That would be a reason to put them back in.

@Kevin: Yeah, that's what I expected. If there are any left, they would be up in their 60s-70s or even beyond. Politically, from what I can read, they are more conservative than over here and more religious.

I always sort of wondered how the Drummer stream sort of seemed to group things together but still also was seemingly kinda random. Now I know. This is like going backstage at the puppet show. I know more, but a little bit of the magic is gone.

I got a beagle for my 10th birthday. I named her Lubi.

  1:49pm Listener Gregory:

Hi, Doug. Great show as always. However, I am not sure I agree with your comment on the beginnings of the Third Stream movement. I don't think the originators like Gunther Schuller, Charles Mingus, John Lewis, and even Ornette Coleman were that interested in moving jazz to the concert hall. I think they were more interested in trying to expand jazz beyond the be-bop mainstream, which was in danger of becoming cliche'ed. Of course, there has always been "jazz plays the classics" tripe around, which DOES fit that description, but I wouldn't call that Third Stream. I'm glad you played the Jimmy Giuffre in any case.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Fair Point. I wasn't intending to mean that the artists themselves were pushing for the sort of legitimacy that fancy concert halls would bestow. Rather, it was the industry of jazz, the labels, bookers and promoters, and especially the critics, who, were encouraging (through all there attendant pressures) the music to follow a path less intimidating to white audiences. Surely my garble missed the essential point I intended to make.
