Miss You Lady Bug
![]() |
Max Branigan | 2013 | WAV | Upon hearing about the call for songs I hopped in the car and tried to record some big bug sounds in the south orange reservation, not that far from Jersey City. Sadly, all I could really find was an absence of noise, most of the lil guys are dead near me. So I recorded my attempts to hear them and subsequent failure to do so. During the process I was moved by all the cicadas squashed on the road, so I went back home and recorded this love song from one deceased cicada to another. I sing about pharaoh in it because I heard on some radio show that one species of cicada makes a distinctive "pharrrraooooh" sound. | 1:02:35 (Pop‑up)

Taiwanese Bug Party with Bass
![]() |
Heather McIntosh | 2013 | WAV | I recently went to China and Taiwan with a band called Azure Ray and had the chance to ride around on scooters from Hualien through the Taroko National Park. Wow. Fun. I try to bring my trusty field recorder on most of my trips. These are some bug friends I recorded while we were on our adventure. These little guys were making such a racket, I knew I was going to want to do something with them. I decided to add a little bass to the bugs | 1:06:50 (Pop‑up)

Cicada's Truth
![]() |
Henry Lowengard | 2013 | WAV | I more of less forgot about your call for cicadas until I was surrounded by them this afternoon in Sojourner Truth Park in my hometown, Kingston NY. Since I'm big on spectral music, I took the sample I recorded and ran it through Spear, cleaned it out, and started pulling the top, broad band of noise down (at about 5200Hz+/-1750Hz) and leaving the lower band (1350Hz+/-350Hz) alone and then I stretched and thinned it out, and added a few hand drawn partials. Then I turned it into stereo and eq'ed the channels with different curves. A peek at the spectrum shows how I cleaned up the sound in Spear and pulled and slimmed the top band (which I have a hard time hearing, but I know it's there), and pulled out the bottom band. I was going to do something with the slow pulses of wideband high frequency noise, but maybe some other time. | 1:27:28 (Pop‑up)

Listener comments!
Yeah, that Alex Orlov was tops!
Already beer o'clock for me. My last Friday of freedom!
ngh, congrats on getting back on the grindstone. We were disgusting GIS in the meeting I just had.
I love this ISB!
Now enjoying some local candy. Flavours: tar, birch sugar and licorice that's been "left to boil overnight". Yum.
Since the restaurant closed downstairs, they left some buckets that have become breeding grounds for mosquitos. I need to enlist my neighbor to help me go down the fire escape so I can turn over the buckets, and lower the ladder so I can get back up.
DCE: Ants don't like chalky or powdery stuff - they have to go around it - which likely doesn't help much...
- I gather (??) there are three main species of cicada - each w/ a different noise.
