I'm currently dog-sitting not 1 but 4 sweet black dogs (1 giant schnauzer, 1 giant poodle, 1 lab, 1 terrier mix)

*Plus* 1 white giant poodle, 1 spotted rat terrier, and 2 sphinx kitties.

So 6 puppies and 2 not-at-all shaggy cats ;-)

I got a beagle for my 10th birthday. What a sweet creature. Would chase after little moles and shrews in the backyard, paralyze them with fear, then run off and get a bone to drop at their feet. She just wanted to play.

Totally dog-dependent! Labs are generally wonderful, period. Although my sister's lab *ate* her next-door neighbor's kitten, that was not wonderful. Then again, later in life Maggie (the lab) lived well with my niece's eyeless cat, so there you go.

Can never go wrong with a good mutt.

we can have dogs of a certain size in this apartment bldg, but the monthly cost is prohibitive. so i enjoy my neighbors' dogs' company as vicarious pets.

My brother has a beagle. The friendliest dumbest dog I've come across. Apparently, they are favored to be experimented on due to their sweet disposition.

I had a beagle growing up as well - very sweet - even to the neighbor's kids who tried to make her eat mud pies

Beagles need a LOT of exercise, they are relatively hard to train, they like to dig and they can be barky.

And they're totally sweet and adorable and loving and if you let one in your house, he/she will be your best friend for life :-)

Pittsburgh is swimming in rescue greyhounds. There is a person here who is a real clearinghouse for them. Dozens of them live in this neighborhood.

Bigger dogs tend to be more tolerant of the rough handling they can get from kids.

Lab or lab mix w/b a fantastic "pretty-big" option. Newfies are the biggest and sweetest dogs in the world, but probably too big for y'all. I dream of Newfies.
