Every show starts with the ’70s! We’ll rediscover forgotten rockers, revisit unfairly maligned disco beats and replay power-pop favorites. Next: plenty of new releases, occasional live bands and more. Don’t let the nickname confuse you.

Favoriting July 24, 2013: Live from the front lounge at Maxwell's! With live performances from CHRIS STAMEY and SPEED THE PLOUGH! Interviews with STAN DEMESKI, BOB BERT, and more! A celebration of and farewell to our dear friend Maxwell's.

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Maxwell's, the Hoboken mainstay and longtime dear friend of WFMU, is closing its doors at the end of July. Wednesday night, July 24, was Bar/None Records night as the venerable local label paid tribute to Maxwell's legendary run. While the Bar/None tribute was happening in the back I was broadcasting from the front lounge with live performances, interviews, and an assortment of Bar/None and Maxwell's-related music - check out the playlist for all the details, and click the links to hear the show!

Extra-special thanks to Scott Williams, Irene Trudel, AmEdeo, and DJ Superpong for their invaluable assistance before, during, and after the show. Thanks as well to Todd Abramson and Glenn Morrow, and to all the guests who came on the air to share their Maxwell's memories.

Please take a moment to follow me on Twitter and/or Like The Evan "Funk" Davies Show on Facebook! Thanks!

  9:20pm
PB:

Considering how great his band was, fair to say Alex Chilton's solo career was an even bigger disappointment than McCartney's?
Avatar The Evan "Funk" Davies Show Marathon 2024 Swag For Life Member 9:23pm
Uncle Michael:

Do you consider Wings part of McCartney's solo career? If so, then I think the premise is flawed.
  9:25pm
PB:

Michael, yes I do. In my opinion McCartney's solo career was dreadful. So was Chilton's. Just my opinion.
  9:25pm
PB:

Including Wings.

Were the Box Tops Chilton's Beatles and Big Star his Wings?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm
Chris in TX via RI:

I'm not afraid to admit I like Wings. But I have never brought myself to listen to a true McCartney solo record. And I'm not in any hurry to.
  9:29pm
PB:

The Box Tops weren't really around long enough to factor into the discussion.

Evan, if you get him to sit down, please tell Freedy that a Northeast Kansan and Cornucopia patron says that he's missed around here...
  9:36pm
PB:

Fair enough. What I should have said is that the Box Tops didn't have nearly the same impact as Big Star. Big Star was in a different league. I'll go punish myself by listening to Band on the Run.
Avatar The Evan "Funk" Davies Show Marathon 2024 Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
Uncle Michael:

Awww...be nice to yourself listen to Venus and Mars. I like Big Star orders of magnitude more than the Box Tops too.
  9:40pm
Rick from WO Town:

Wings are great. I always think of the Beatles as McCartney's former back-up band, which I think is fair. And no Beatles album (well maybe 2 are) are as good as All Things Must Pass from the guitar guy.
Avatar The Evan "Funk" Davies Show Marathon 2024 Swag For Life Member 9:42pm
Uncle Michael:

I don't know if I think ATMP is better than every Beatles album but I do think it's the best post-Beatles release.
  9:43pm
Jojodillon:

Good stuff, reminds me of Ben Gibbard a bit.
  9:44pm
PB:

I agree, All Things Must Pass is a great album (thanks in large part to Phil Spector's production), but The Beatles as McCartney's backup band? I assume you're kidding. If not, that is one of the most ridiculous statements I've ever heard, about any topic. Plastic Ono Band was also a great Beatles solo record, and Imagine was pretty good too.

...BigStar better than solo Chilton? - I don't know much but I wonder if there might be some truth to that...like JoeStrummer said about the Clash - if you got the right people (band) for the right chemistry - you should really value that...
- I love that FMU brings Special Events to my humble trap!...

...Sir (Paul) Macca solo - I think of as a lot like Clapton - I know it's in him but his motivation & his 'kewlness' goes up & down over years (decades?!) ...I'd say Sir Macca's Kewlness in later recent years has gone up & his solo albums are okay - & I'd love to have seen him Live.
...Off-topic of Maxwell's (sorry) but typical chatty for efd's board here I suppose!...

Ah yes, Maxwell's Plum. It hurts to know that it will be with us no longer. A Cultural Landmark. An Institution. An integral part of Hoboken, of New Jersey, of the New York Metropolitan Area music scene. Long live Maxwell's, and all of the fine people who are part of it, who have performed there, and who have passed through its doors. Maxwell's is part of who we are.
