Avatar 3:24pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I first heard of Farren via the writing credit (with Lemmy) for Hawkwind's "lost johnny" on the 1974 album -- had to go back & discover the Deviants, which was quite an awesome trip.

Yes - THX RTD.

Avatar 4:05pm Cecile:

you met Leslie West yesterday?
  4:06pm Mark:

I've heard he's a cool guy, Tim.
Avatar 4:07pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

...and after a very brief search, NO evidence of the '70s TV ads for "la machine" (desperately cheap food processor thingie) -- How are the kids today gonna believe such things existed on earth?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Scott Williams:

them cats was 6-finger satellite's drummer + early 90s providence pals. disc issued by John Dwyer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm tim from champaign:

Ha! Yesterday I was thinking about when I met him 21 years ago. He was a cool guy. Leslie was working as a social worker at the VA hospital in Grand Rapids, MI at the time.
Avatar 4:08pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

memorable TV spots they were, as well.
Avatar 4:09pm Cecile:

wow, sounds like a big career change for him. But doing good work!
  4:11pm Mark:

Wow, that's amazing, Tim! How the hell did he end up in Grand Rapids, one wonders!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm tim from champaign:

I can't remember anymore how he ended up in GR. Finding out he was a social worker really struck a chord because I was majoring in social work in college at that time. He was still a big dude too.
  4:15pm KP:

Leslie West has had health problems but last I heard is gigging and recording.
  4:17pm KP:

Probably his own problems led him to that field. He has lost a leg to diabetes but seems to have adjusted.
Avatar 4:18pm Yair Yona:

What You Get was originally released in 83-84, and it appears in the Yossi Elephant compilation that was out in 96
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Scott Williams:

thanks for the clarification Yair!
  4:18pm Mark:

I know Mountain was imperfect, but I still loved them. His guitar had such a nasty tone in those days. I bet if I were a biker, I'd be really into them.
  4:19pm Mark:

This whole digression began with a song with a cowbell in it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm DCE:

oh yeah, I spent several years in high school devouring all the Jr tones Leslie cranked out. Saw him live in like '89?
Avatar 4:23pm Cecile:

and so on and so on and dooby dooby so on.
  4:26pm Mark:

THE Clint Blacklaw?
Avatar 4:27pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Keep heading in this direction, it'll be time to bust out my bro Hawkshaw...
Avatar 4:27pm Kurt Gottschalk:

the good musicians are always in the left channel anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm DCE:

my record player makes a hum I can't seem to get rid of. drives me nuts.
Avatar 4:30pm Yair Yona:

@DCE - grounding hum perhaps?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm DCE:

yeah, I'm guessing, but I've tried grounding several different ways and it's still there. I'll keep thinkin' on it though.
Avatar 4:31pm Kurt Gottschalk:

i'm such a dork that i thought andrea was doing a show on the art of guitar pickups!
  4:33pm Mark:

This version of "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" is off the hook!
  4:36pm Mark:

Whoa, my head is spinning. I think I'm gonna hurl!
Avatar 4:37pm Yair Yona:

@DCE - the problem with grounding can come from different places. If the player goes through an external pre-amp or something, make sure it's on batteries/grounded properly. check the socket in the wall and try to place the player in a different socket. Try to see if there's a lighting dimmer on or some sort of electric influence from other cables put together. I had that problem for years and eventually I understood it's something inside that has to do with the engine. I replaced the record player and since then, there's no hum ;)
Avatar 4:38pm northguineahills:

After I pay off my debts, the first thing I'm going to do around my third paycheck is get a some new record needles. I've been using the same one for 2.5 years, I usually replace mine every 6 months.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm DCE:

thanks for the info, Yair!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Mike East:

sometimes just a loose or bad RCA cable/connection will cause a nasty hum. I've had that issue and can usually jiggle it into silence.

Damn, ngh - that's gotta get expensive...I haven't change my needle in a few years.
Avatar 4:41pm Yair Yona:

@DCE - hope that helps somehow. I really feel you on this. it's annoying and frustrating.
Avatar 4:43pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

My new (dirt cheap) receiver came with a free bonus hum on the Phono setting. I was delighted.
Avatar 4:44pm northguineahills:

I abuse my needles from time to time, and I have multiple turntables. (down to four right now).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm DCE:

yeah, that's it RTD, only hums on phono...mine's a vintage Kenwood that's really nice otherwise. But it's also too big to fit into the cabinet I have so it stands on its side next to my other componentry.
  4:45pm Jujube:

this sounds good
Avatar 4:47pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I dig, DCE -- I've checked cables, obvious ground issues, etc., but in my case it's just a cheapshit receiver. My 25+ year old Sony finally gave up the ghost & I was in a panic for weeks until getting something (anything) with a phono preamp setting....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Mike East:

or maybe its this: www.dailymail.co.uk...
Avatar 4:47pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

They should've advertised FREE LINE-HUM WITH PURCHASE!
Avatar 4:48pm Cheri Pi:

Oh baby, I was just enjoying Tsee Mud in Sue P's golden archives this weekend
Avatar 4:49pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Mike East: Funny thing about that: Growing up in DC, there's always been these periods of bizarre deep humming roar outside, lasts about 25 seconds, comes from no direction. Conspiracy theories abound in the mind of a kid... I have yet to disprove any of those theories...
Avatar 4:50pm Cheri Pi:

Damn, this LP is price-ay.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm DCE:

Phono of course needs more amplifying than other components - just that needle in vinyl - so makes sense only that hums. You all know that...
