@NGH: you know, that's the kind of attitude that gets you in trouble with the law. You'd better be back soon

NGH, isn't that the teddy-bear spokesman for that fabric softener in the TV ads? What the hell am I talking about?

Avatar 12:41pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

yeh, that's right. I had nicked the Dragstrip Riot film poster for a gig flyer a few years ago. Knew it sounded familiar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm tim from champaign:

My wife had the astute observation that still active 90s punkers have graduated from Stooges to solo Iggy. For instance, Mudhoney's "I like It Small" has quite a bit of Iggy's "5'1"" vibe.
Avatar 12:43pm fred:

So that's like those interview records where the answers are set and the questions are left to the host?
Avatar 12:44pm fred:

@tim: I'm not sure I'd use "graduated" there. On second thoughts (my personal best) it makes some kind of sense
Avatar 12:44pm Cheri Pi:

I loved New Values in the late 80's early 90's. Mrs tfC has a good point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm chris:

hehe, I read it as Truth not noticing the mispelling. That is an epic track!
Avatar 12:47pm fred:

@tim: Do they have to wear gowns when graduating? Pics or it didn't happen
Avatar 12:51pm Cheri Pi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm tim from champaign:

Mrs tfc should know. She's from Detroit and her last name is Popp. Coincidence?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Rich in Washington:

Dwarves! So damn intense! One of the craziest bands I've ever seen live.
Avatar 1:34pm Cecile:

I never heard them until now! I like them.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm Rich in Washington:

Their earliest albums are the best. I lost track of them after their first three releases but have noticed that their later albums are markedly less frantic.

Avatar 1:39pm Cecile:

I like their first one, but really love their Hey Judester

Lazy Cowgirls were like a west coast version of the Dogs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm braveness23:

I saw Pussy Galore at some place in Newport or Covington KY in the late 80's. @CP, were you at that show?
Avatar 1:48pm Diane Kamikaze:

Argh. Sorry. We have spotify on all the computers in the station and they cancel each other out.. :(
The word has gone out! No more miscues!
Avatar 1:50pm Cheri Pi:

B23-yes that was the show at Top Hats!
Avatar 1:50pm Cheri Pi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm braveness23:

Where was that place? Am I right that it was in KY? My memory... so dim...
Avatar 1:54pm Cecile:

aw, Gaunt! waaaaah.
Avatar 1:55pm Cecile:

yes, absolutely! that's how it was.
Avatar 1:57pm Cheri Pi:

Yes-it was the spillover club after the Jockey Club 'died" in Newport, can't remember what street, I may have someold f lyers...
Avatar 1:58pm Cecile:

Gaunt reminded me of the Saints a lot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm braveness23:

Ain't that the truth. I used to lie through my teeth about what kind of music I actually listened to because I thought I would get the shit beat out of me. I recently saw a facebook post by the old DJ of our punk rock radio show back in the day and he said he was listening to the Bronski Beat while writing his blog. I got a good chuckle out of that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Rich in Washington:

I was almost completely done with punk by 1984 but these 90s punk resurgence bands just totally kicked ass (Gaunt, New Bomb Turks, Oblivians, Dwarves, Cheater Slicks, God Bullies, Pain Teens, and more).
Avatar 2:00pm Cecile:

Avatar 2:01pm Cecile:

And Mick Collins has crazy ecletic taste.
Avatar 2:01pm Cecile:

I mean, he made a garage-techno record!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm tim from champaign:

Once I asked Mick Collins what he was listening to when a particular Dirtbombs record came out. He said in a you-dumb-ass tone "I don't know. I've got 7000 records".
Avatar 2:05pm Cecile:

hahahahahaha, but aw, tim.
Avatar 2:06pm Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm braveness23:

Funny, I was never really into punk at all despite being in a gigging punk band in 83-86. Punk was an easy way for a bunch of suburban high school kids to break into the local urban music scene. In deep, deep secrecy we wanted to be Rush but that required chops and equipment and there just wern't clubs where a bunch of 16 year olds could get booked and people show up. The Jockey Club in Newport KY was relatively easy to get booked as an opener so punk it was. We had so many gigs booked opening for huge bands but the tours always fell through. TSOL, DRI, The Dicks... We had no idea when we were doing it what a big deal that was.
Avatar 2:09pm fred:

Mick Collins is as close to a god-figure as I have. Which is to say: not in the same zip-code. I kinda like what he said, but I don't really care
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm coe:

So bummed I could not catch the Muffs at Maxwell's
Avatar 2:15pm InBrkly:

hypothesis: they never got big because people were afraid of getting muffed with a mic stand.
Avatar 2:15pm BadGuyZero:

The Muffs!

I had so much fun at their show at Maxwell's a couple of weeks ago. Longest Muffs set ever!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm tim from champaign:

I looooooove King Khan & BBQ show. The first time is saw King Khan & BBQ Show was Black Lips and River City Tanlines. That was a show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm coe:

@BadGuy yeah I heard they did a crazy long set for them.
Avatar 2:26pm Cheri Pi:

Avatar 2:27pm Cheri Pi:

tfC- I got to see em here a few years ago and dance on the stage with them :)
Avatar 2:27pm Negative Eclipse:

Dirtbombs Rule
Avatar 2:28pm Cheri Pi:

Avatar 2:28pm Cheri Pi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm coe:

Mark's one man thing is so cool. He plays drums and guitar at the same time.
Avatar 2:30pm Cecile:

he caused riots!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm tim from champaign:

Cheri, had King Khan turned into Tina Turner at that point in the show?
Avatar 2:32pm fred:

I'll play the creepy game and say I'd love to see Cheri Pi dance. FAIL: I can't do it
Avatar 2:32pm Negative Eclipse:

Ray was at Judy Garland's last wedding .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Todd76Pct:

Hi Diane! Loving the show today! Went to school in Columbus OH. Should have stayed there for all the great music that's come ot of there since I left in the late 70's!!!
Avatar 2:33pm Cheri Pi:

TfC Yes, I was hoping for his Sun Ra interpretation but he was just as fierce as Tina.
Avatar 2:33pm Cheri Pi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm braveness23:

Great interview. Thanks Diane. Thanks Eric!
Avatar 2:34pm Cheri Pi:

Avatar 2:35pm Cheri Pi:

Avatar 2:35pm Diane Kamikaze:

Yes, definitely some Devo love there.. Ohio strikes again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm braveness23:

I was thinking the same thing too!
Avatar 2:36pm Cheri Pi:

Right on Cecile!
Avatar 2:36pm northguineahills:

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA missed the interview to see Shuggie Otis! Archives this weekend I go!

Most of Shuggie's set was a tee bit formulaic, but his musicians (two were his bros), were sublime. And when Shuggie let go on his awesome blues guitar, it was like Jimi meets Thurston, and that made the show beyond comprehension.
Avatar 2:37pm Cheri Pi:

Sounds snuggly soft @NGH! Wish I could see Shuggie Otis, he's playing some hipster festival here I think...
Avatar 2:38pm Chris from DC:

Poor old Johnnie Ray...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm Todd76Pct:

A shameless plug: For anyone in CT, Diztrict Allstarz, a postpunk/funk/hip hop band I'm in w/ Bruce from AOD is playing tonight in Hamden w/ Cliffand Ivy, a cool industrial/goth/postpunk/dance band from AK (formerly NJ) will hit the stage with the legendary Don Bolles (the Germs, 45 Grave, Celebrity Skin, etc.) at 8:45 and Diztrict Allstarz will close out the show @ 9:30. Hope to see some of you all there!
Avatar 2:38pm BadGuyZero:

So many great bands from Ohio, especially Dayton and Akron. Must be something in the water up there.
Avatar 2:40pm northguineahills:

CP: See him! His band still has that minimalist deft funk touch, w/ moments of brilliance sprinkled in. If it wasn't for a few numbers of funky bass riff/solo/solo/solo/solo., it would have been hyper-sublime.
Avatar 2:40pm Cecile:

wow this is new, but sounds like classic hard rock from '74 or something.
Avatar 2:41pm Cecile:

and that singer is bringing it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm tim from champaign:

Yeah! I was trying to figure out what Alice Cooper album Free Fall was on.
Avatar 2:42pm Cecile:

didja see Free Fall at Roadburn, Diane?
Avatar 2:44pm Cheri Pi:

WORD-will do Ngh! Also C$- Freefall reminds me of the Who too...
Avatar 2:46pm Cheri Pi:

Killer show today DK! I love this Kylesa song.
Avatar 2:46pm Cecile:

yeah, some mid-period Who for sure
Avatar 2:47pm Sean D. Daily:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm coe:

@Todd76Pct are you guys playing the Stanhope house when AOD plays there with Flag of Democracy?
Avatar 2:49pm Cecile:

I ordered a used copy of the Free Fall disc on Amazon and forgot I had a credit! Yay! Free tunes!
Avatar 2:51pm northguineahills:

Avatar 2:55pm Chris from DC:

Avatar 2:58pm northguineahills:

Kevin, it was awesome! Sly & Robbie last month was also amazing. Sheila E last week was mostly grade school nostalgia.
Avatar 2:59pm northguineahills:

Ackkk! Thanks Diana. Beautiful as always!
