Hey Faye! Got the show playing in the liquor store again. Hello Children is proven to boost sales.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Faye:

hi Scott McD! Wow I'm glad to see you too! Hello Mike East! Hopefully this will provide a nice accompaniment
Avatar 9:27pm Jeff:

Hello Faye and Fayesians - this time I get to listen live for a change.
  9:28pm Carmichael:

Scott! Indeed, the longest rally ever! Chill with the Swirlies, as are we. As we are. We are as too ...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm common:

and thanks for swirlies!
Avatar 9:32pm TV's WFMU Listener 8442:

Hey! Hello all! Haven't been able to listen live for awhile. Faye: got the HC pledge premium a few weeks back and it is most excellent! Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm Faye:

oh Jeff hello! Can you email me a Manhattan please? howdy 8442! so glad you like the premium!
Avatar 9:39pm TV's WFMU Listener 8442:

@Matt: I've found that HC improves most things: a boring Thursday am at work, and, currently, sanding & staining furniture. Also, where is your liquor store? Maybe we could have a HC listener party there.
Avatar 9:43pm Droll:

12-string Fahey, like a fresh breeze. Then a hot breeze. Then a cold breeze. Oh 12-string Fahey... Big, big, panorama sound.

perfect rain song for us here in Philthy. Thanks Faye.
Avatar 9:45pm listener mark:

Hi everybody! Just listening and sipping a pumpkin ale. The speakers are at 7.
Swag For Life Member 9:46pm 12539:

Time for the famous Gentle Piano Minute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm maestroso:

...and we have some nice piano for the light rain interlude... Hi Faye!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm Scott McDowell:

That was a neat trick getting from Swirlies to this. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Faye:

heee hee hee ;)
Avatar 9:50pm Jeff:

I'll try to squeeze a cocktail through the wires. If that doesn't work... there's vermouth and a gigantic jar of cherries in the station fridge, bitters in the Volunteer Room... somebody just needs to bring you some whisky.

Surely somebody will bring you some whiskey. And ice. And stir all that stuff together.

Meanwhile... I think I shall sip an English bitter. Perhaps some London Pride.
Avatar 9:52pm Fernando:

I gotta get back to NYC. It's been 12 years...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm Mike East:

Just polished off a cup of ginger tea. Time for a nip from my bottle of laparoscopy.

  9:55pm Marmalade Kitty:

Hello Faye! sounding good!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm Mike East:

Laphroaig...dumb autocorrect
Avatar 9:57pm listener mark:

I volunteer to bring a blended whiskey.
Avatar 10:01pm listener mark:

To add a whisky such as Laphroaig to a mixed drink? Never! Never, I say. Wars have been started for less.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Scott McDowell:

Let me say it, I think this body/head record is on some other level.
Avatar 10:02pm Shaun(ununun):

That Body/Head track or snippet(?) was pretty awesome. I want to hear the album.
  10:02pm H_cameron:

Hey Faye! We are listening - wish you were here!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm Scott McDowell:

Shaun ----- Maybe later after faye wraps up you can listen to it: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm Mike East:

@listener Mark...they were doing a tasting recently where they were using laphroaig in mixed drinks....I was kind of shocked that the company themselves would do something so radical...sacrilegious even
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm Faye:

hey HC! hello to everyone!
Avatar 10:06pm Jeff:

Yeah. No single malts are harmed in the cocktails here - Manhattans get on quite well with American rye whiskeys in them, or bourbons if you're in that sort of mood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm Mike East:

  10:08pm Carmichael:

I leave you guys for a minute, and suddenly we're talking Scottish whisky. Carry on!
Avatar 10:11pm Shaun(ununun):

Thanks, Scott (a reminder)! I've actually seen the playlist before after discovering they were releasing the album the same evening(10th). Just haven't got around to listening to it yet. I will.
Avatar 10:12pm Droll:

Faye, Don't let ELP ruin P@aE for you. The orchestral version is still tasteful.
Avatar 10:12pm Shaun(ununun):

before, after*
Avatar 10:13pm TV's WFMU Listener 8442:

Wasn't 18 Wheeler Tom Scharpling's fanzine/record label?
  10:14pm Andrew in Oklahoma:

Hello Faye I am listening. On the new app too wow!
Avatar 10:15pm Jeff:

Although... I do one "Manhattan" version at home which is scotch-whisky-themed.

The body of the drink is constructed using a mild blended scotch whisky, but it's served in a brandy snifter, and said snifter has had a wee splash of Bowmore 15 swirled around in it to coat the inside of the glass.

Smelling all that peat as you drink befuddles the senses and makes you think the whole beverage might be as peaty as the scents you sense. It's a fun drink.

Oh, and a regular bright-red maraschino cherry just isn't the right thing in that drink. Gotta use those Luxardo dark candied marasca cherries.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm pacific standard simon:

Howdy, ma'am.
Avatar 10:17pm Shaun(ununun):

'In the early 1990s, Scharpling was the publisher of 18 Wheeler fanzine, and ran an independent record label of the same name. The first 7-inch single by Portastatic was released by Scharpling's label in 1992...' (From Sharpling's Wiki page)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm Faye:

wow Andrew in OK!!! hello simon! Jeff, I imagine that you can make a good Gin martini. which is my favorite cocktail. I'm interested in your gin opinions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm Faye:

yikes! I feel sorry to not have already known that... thank you Shaun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm pacific standard simon:

I make a pretty dandy martini, which for many years, was all I drank. No fancy ultra-expensive gins, though.
Avatar 10:21pm dk:

mr. scharpling's significance and ubiquity is such that it's probably safe to assume that if you see a "tom s." anywhere, it's him. in fact, if you meet a "tom s." who ISN'T scharpling, it's probably safe to assume they don't actually exist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm pacific standard simon:

Tom Sawyer will be heartbroken to learn.
Avatar 10:23pm dk:

funny thing about that: the rush song, "tom sawyer", was actually a sly reference to tom scharpling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm pacific standard simon:

Shirley, you jest!
Avatar 10:28pm listener mark:

To those of you who do not know Jeff. He carries a case from which he produces the finest ingredients to build outstanding cocktails.
  10:33pm Marmalade Kitty:

Avatar 10:33pm Jeff:

@listener mark: That's just the legend, a tale spun by X Ray Burns, who is as we all know an excellent spinner of tales. There is no magical case, though I like the image.

Occasionally, tasty drinkables might emerge from a bag... or the inner pocket of a specially-equipped jacket. Or from under a cape.

But not from a case.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm Scott McDowell:

Don't sleep on Jeff's coffee operation either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm Scott McDowell:

dk, that you dave? I missed seeing you this eve!
Avatar 10:35pm listener mark:

We haven't figured out how crushed, cubed, or splintered ice is dispensed from a seemingly ordinary sample case.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm pacific standard simon:

[imagining a trench coat lined with little elastic loops to hold dozens of bitters bottles]
Avatar 10:40pm listener mark:

My adult beverage of choice this evening is a Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale.
Avatar 10:43pm Thomas:

good one, mark
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Faye, do you know who will be filling in for you while you're out?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm Faye:

yes m'dear it's Danny Blumin
Avatar 10:47pm Jeff:

To our hostess and her love of the martini:

First: a martini is a gin drink. So while I applaud your appreciation of a proper (gin) martini, I see no need to unnecessarily specify "gin martini", because a drink which contains no gin is not a martini.

There is no such thing as a "vodka martini" because such a drink just isn't a martini. Isn't now, never will be. So those people who like whatever that is will need to come up with their own name for it, and leave the word "martini" alone.

Done with that snark, on to the drink... it's so simple, and so gin-forward, that you really taste the herb blend of the gin. So while the gin you use needn't necessarily be expensive, it does matter which you use - it has to be one you like, and they're so different! And sure, some of the ones which taste great cost more than jug gin.

Find a dry vermouth you like - I'm pretty fond of Dolin Dry.

Find a great olive - maybe Spanish, nothing stuffed into it. Discover through delicious trial and error how much of the olive brine you like left on it (or you may want to rinse it in water or vermouth).

Find your preferred ratio. I've pretty much settled on the 4:1 to 5:1 range, eschewing the insane "dryness" competition of the late 20th century. (In the Thirties - think our icons Nick and Nora - 3:1 was more the norm).

Stir 'til really really cold, serve in a freezer-chilled cocktail glass, drink before it's bathwater-warm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Blumin, huh? Never heard of him. You're sure of that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I am totally joking. He had this time slot for a while and filled in on WFMU just recently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Faye:

okay, Jeff, I agree! I always thought martinis were a Gin drink but bartenders always assume I mean vodka
Avatar 10:51pm Jeff:

You need to find classier dives to haunt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm pacific standard simon:

@ Jeff - everything you say, spot on. Will add that mixing technique is important -- I prefer a shaker, held so that it can be swirled with the bottom hand, not shaken up and down. Makes a crystal clear cocktail.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm Mike East:

@Jeff how do you feel about dirty martinis?
Avatar 10:53pm Jeff:

@Mike: not my own particular poison, but I'll never say never.
  10:53pm Carmichael:

Daniel B. Is the man. He slays when he plays. Ass is kicked, and names are taken. Selah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm Faye:

here's my opinion, clean & dry as possible
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm Mike East:

I love em. That's my cocktail when I go out to fancypants dinner. My wife gets a Gibson.
Avatar 10:55pm Jeff:

@pss: a fine technique if you can make that motion work for you. I should try it again myself.

...and see, pacific standard simon brings it right back to the SWIRLIES!
Avatar 10:56pm listener mark:

Pour chilled gin into a chilled glass, bow the head in memory of vermouth, drink.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm Tome:

hi Faye ! Hi Kiddles ! great fun and tunes and ,,, well ABSOLUt (ly) & Cranberry ! yummy !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm pacific standard simon:

Probably works for me because it's the same motion as shaping dinner rolls, only the hand faces up, not down (do it for 30 seconds). I make a lot of rolls.
Avatar 11:07pm BU77DOZ'r:

Just tuning into this madness.
Avatar 11:07pm ranjit:

I want dinner rolls now.
Swag For Life Member 11:13pm 12539:

Those must be the people bringing you the whiskey.
Avatar 11:18pm listener mark:

We have one more show together. Then we listen to the archives and dream of November.

good evening Ike!
Avatar 11:35pm Shaun(ununun):

November = return of Hello Children & Kayo Dot - Hubardo 3xLP in the mail for me. Two very exciting things. Rather than lamenting the absence of this show for the next month (will listen to some archives, probably). Safe travels! :)

The 'Red Waves' tracks are really good. The Dark Sunny Land is really nice. Heh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm Faye:

thanks for listening Shaun!
Avatar 11:37pm Shaun(ununun):

were*. That compilation, I imagine is very interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm pacific standard simon:

I look forward to your return, Faye -- this is a good show, never boring.
Avatar 11:41pm listener mark:

Thanks Faye for another interesting musical interlude. We will miss you, but absence makes the heart grow fonder. And absinthe makes you hallucinate green dragons. I wonder where we could find some good old-fashioned wormwood absinthe?
Avatar 11:42pm Shaun(ununun):

Thank you, Faye. I concur with Simon.
