Can we just hear Stoned and Starving now? Get it over with.. and also cause I'm anxiously anticipating it..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm Scott McDowell:

Never heard of it.

hey man...HEY MAN...
Avatar 3:07pm glenn:

i walked into my local vinyl emporium yesterday to the luxurious tones of stoned and starving, blasting at 11.
Avatar 3:08pm Chris from DC:

Ending the day. If only....
Avatar 3:10pm northguineahills:

Yeah, I'm at the office for at least another 4+ hours....
Avatar 3:10pm Chris from DC:

At least we have this.
Avatar 3:11pm PKNY:

I cheated on WFMU yesterday, and listened to the Coltrane marathon on WKCR.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm tim from champaign:

Was the any post A Love Supreme Coltrane featured on WKCR?
Avatar 3:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- was also very recently 50th Anniversary of the terrible events that inspired 'Alabama' - so...
Avatar 3:14pm glenn:

pkny is a bad radio boyfriend.
  3:15pm Mark:

This is interesting--not the take of "Alabama" that was on "Live at Birdland." Very cool. And isn't Hipnosis on a Jackie McLean album that Grachan plays on? You're playing some excellent tunes today, my friend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm Scott McDowell:

The Live at Birdland LP that I pulled from the WFMU library had a shortened version of Alalbama - only 2 minutes! So bizarre.
Avatar 3:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- were trying to wiki 'Hipnosis' to find out about personnel & such - & it looked like that to me...
3:20pm Adam in Portland and Lynnwood:

This Coltrane fella really blows! Great show!
Avatar 3:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Hipnosis WigKey :
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Scott McDowell:

Yep indeed it's from the Jackie McLean album Hipnosis -- but pulled here from Grachan Moncur's Mosaic Select box set.
Avatar 3:21pm PKNY:

@Glenn - I'm a Trane hoe, what can I say?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Scott McDowell:

No foul, pkny, no foul.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm DCE:

Irene played "A Love Supreme" yesterday, Tim, just fyi
  3:22pm Mark:

Thanks for the link, RR--wow, look at that lineup! A Grachan Moncur Mosaic box set. Bet they sold about 3 of those! (I'd be one of the 3, of course--might have to pick that one up.) Love Grachan Moncur's "Evolution" album, too!
  3:23pm SLHalper:

@tim, they played take 1 of Ascension in the afternoon, then a 2 hour show co-hosted by Elliot Sharp with only '66 music - mostly unreleased. Very out.
Avatar 3:23pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

LOVE LOVE LOVE this Coltrane/Cherry release.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Scott McDowell:

re: mosaic select box: It's mostly McLean records plus Some Other Stuff and Evolution.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Andrew Waterloo:

I got to see ROVA play Ascension in Guelph.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Andrew Waterloo:

There's a couple good Moncur releases on Actuelle as well.
  3:27pm Mark:

Coltrane WAS very out in '66. Just listened to part of his set at Newport that year. People must have been wondering wtf was going on. I love this Cherry/Coltrane recording, too. I never knew they played together--great stuff! Speaking of Don Cherry, pick up his "Complete Communion" with Gato Barbieri if you don't already have it. I think Billy Higgins plays drums on that one, too. The perfect balance of melodic and out. Great album.
Avatar 3:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

All b. Sept. 23: Trane, Springsteen, Ray Charles
Avatar 3:28pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

True, that's a great one Mark.
  3:30pm Mark:

And let's throw in Jackie McLean's "Let Freedom Ring" while we're at it.
  3:31pm bloopy:

Avatar 3:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Cherry & Higgins (& Charlie Haden) were w/ Ornette, of course - & Trane hung w/ them a bit...
Avatar 3:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...to some Rockers, Jazz is - Uncool (&, even more so maybe - vice versa).
- *Sorry* - Trane & Monk are as much 'Home' as Jimi & the Beatles...
  3:35pm Mark:

Yeah that was a monstrous quartet. Apparently they were THE group to see in NY that first year they blew in from L.A. ('59, maybe?) Charlie said he looked up one night and along the bar was every musician he respected, including Mingus, checking them out. Must have been a little nerve-wracking for him.
  3:37pm Mark:

Most musicians respect other great musicians, regardless of genre. It's the fans that can be closed-minded.
Avatar 3:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yeah - didn't Charlie say Leonard Bernstein was feeling up his bass - ??...
Avatar 3:38pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- well...touching it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm YETI BOB:

RevRabbit: As far as I am concerned. Jazz musicians INVENTED cool. No rocker ever has been as cool as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, or Charles Mingus. (Just to pick a few names).
Avatar 3:41pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...some say Lester Young *specifically* invented 'Cool' : p ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm DCE:

now how'd they do that LIVE??
Avatar 3:42pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Miles & Mingus could run a little 'Hot'...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm common:

that skipping disc sounded krazy with coltrane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm YETI BOB:

RevRabbit: Yeah, Lester Young, there was one cool cat.
Avatar 3:45pm steve:

i like the jazzy skipping
  3:45pm Mark:

Leonard Bernstein's a perfect example of the kind of musician I was talking about. When everyone was making fun of the Beatles, Bernstein told them, wait--there's more here than screaming teenagers, you have to listen to how inventive and original this music is. He was a great fan of all good music--not just classical.
Avatar 3:48pm bobdoesthings:

Are those cicadas? This would terrify Tom Sharpling
  3:48pm bloopy:

you're the coltrane guy. irwin is the lee morgan guy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm YETI BOB:

"Prez invented cool. Rather than state a melody, he suggested it. He barely breathed into his horn, creating an intimacy that gave me chills."

Avatar 3:49pm northguineahills:

curious, I faved this Maximin track on Fabio's show two weeks ago. reminds me of Main w/ a darker undercurrent.
Avatar 3:53pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

same here (maximin starred)
Avatar 3:58pm northguineahills:

Gonna go see Gate & Tom Carter Thursnite, psyched!
Avatar 4:02pm glenn:

i have to go to the store. when will stoned and starving be played?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Scott McDowell:

northguineahills, I read that as "Thurstonite"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Andrew Waterloo:

i wonder if a third Fela vinyl box set will be released.
Avatar 4:13pm northguineahills:

Thurston's one true weakness besides Kim.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm DCE:

haha NGH!!

Avatar 5:36pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

spending too much time away from headphones.
this me likey.
Avatar 5:57pm hamburger:

I was secretly wondering if Parquet Courts - Stoned and Starving would be played, but alas it wasn't, which would have been cool, but no point being too predictable here at the same time!
Avatar 5:57pm northguineahills:

Thankewws Scott!
Avatar 5:58pm Whosondephone:

Does the studio change affect the records? The bass sounds a little dead.
