good week for music in leeds this week too-- there were 30 drummers and drumkits outside the art gallery on sunday afternoon, and vibracathedral orchestra in an old cinema in bradford with films and some kind of performance artist last night-- great

@DCE - Just saw Pinhas in a little boutique here in Sacramento. He played with a Bay Area guitarist named Barry Cleveland. The set was phenomenal and much needed, as there has been a drought of experimentalism in the area. Check out my buddy's channel, lots of great performances: tinyurl.com...

Godspeed You! Black Emperor was just awarded the Polaris Prize in Canada. This is an award that is given regardless of genre or sales history; it's artistic merit only. They weren't critical of the prize -- their statement was critical of having an awards gala in a time of austerity. http://www.cbc.ca/news/arts/polaris-winner-critical-of-award-gala-in-a-time-of-austerity-1.1865716

They were also critical of allowing a car company to sponsor the gala while the polar ice caps are melting "live-streaming" this summer.

wouldn't you rather hang out with The Arcade Fire (hahaha!)
  4:45pm
ifny:

@Cecile Oh I don't know about that. They know how to have a good toss up, and they want to bring the crud back to the scene: "'Maybe the next celebration should happen in a cruddier hall, without the corporate banners and culture overlords. and maybe a party thusly is long overdue.'" -GYBE on the gala

Avatar 4:48pm

i'd hang out with arcade fire, at least in montreal.
  4:50pm
Dean:

Not solicited, but my two cents about Godspeed. I saw them once, at Victoriaville, At the time, late '90s, maybe 2000, they didn't seem to be about "cruddier" anything. Sure, that was pre-this-particular-austerity, but I thought the backdrop projections of black-and-white movie clips were just a wee bit pretentious and overwrought. While I appreciate their nod to Russel Brand, I'm not sure they have earned their place to pontificate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm

Arcade Fire's music makes me want to start punching people out. Are they fun to party with?

Avatar 4:53pm
Chris from DC:

Yes, love this Gravity Adjusters record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I think Godspeed is more like Daft Punk or Burial where they're pretty hardcore about projecting a particular aesthetic that isn't necessarily who they are at home.
Avatar 4:55pm
Loren:

I'd like to hang out with The Dead C. Hung out with Robbie after a gig once... he was gravely disappointed show attendees weren't dropping acid and smoking foot long blunts... I told him we did that last week. Only yoga and greek yogurt this week.
Avatar 4:55pm
