This month four FMU super-friends - Rob, Kurt, Irene and Brian - will each bring you a set recorded live at this summer's stirring Festival of the Desert / Caravan for Peace Concert at Lincoln Center's Damrosch Bandshell.
Rob kicks things off this week with the performance that actually closed the July 31 four-band spectacular, by Aziz Sahmaoui and University of Gnawa. Sahmaoui is the charismatic ex-singer of Paris Maghrebi music machine Orchestre National de Barbes, and a former Joe Zawinul sideman. His new group is rooted in Morocco's popular chaabi style but has a distinctly Parisian multi-culti flavor, with West African and other international styles in the mix. U of G wowed the crowd in this New York debut, and you'll hear why tonight.
Huge thanks to Bill Bragin and everyone at Lincoln Center, and especially to our illustrious engineer Irene Trudel.
