Okay, lovely people.
Please talk me down from bashing my head against my desk. I just got the required reading for my diversity training next week, and it's so patronizing and just....out of touch. I remember having training in 20 years ago that was less clueless and that was supposed to be the bad old days.

Swaying trees:

Cecile, you have a job, and that is pretty groovy. They're giving you lots of time to space out during the training. The people who wrote it are human, doing their job. Does that help?
Avatar 4:59pm
Cecile:

Not that much, swaying. Still, I'll just tough it out, bring a sketchbook, and get a lot of satirical cartoon ideas out of it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm
tim from champaign:

Cecile - maybe using this opportunity to enlighten the patronizing trainers? Ugh, sounds rough.

Thee WORST work training I ever had was having to sit through 21 HOURS (spread over 3 days) of the "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" training at Texas Tech University. I felt like I was sent to some Ned Flanders style re-education camp.

They mean well (unless it is a for profit entity teaching it, then there is doubt).
Avatar 5:07pm
Cecile:

I don't want to engage. In this particular work culture, a woman with an opinion gets laughed at and not taken seriously. It's like I hold up a sign that says "please make stupid jokes at my expense."

I still give opinions freely in spite of that, but it's going to be an 8 hour session. And of course, if you bring up things like the diversity of personal styles and upbringing outside of standard stereotypes.....aiiiiiii....I am just going to draw a lot of pictures and nod sagely.

  5:20pm
Swaying trees:

Hey Steve, I wouldn't love it but as someone who was unemployed for 2.5 years a while ago, having a job is something to be grateful for. It's up to the individual if is soul-killing enought to leave and if they think they can find another job that even pays okay--a bigger and bigger problem as we get older. Sorry if this is a bummer to some but it I think it is realistic right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm
