Every October a bevy of massive marching bands from around the country
and the globe squonk their way to Boston for the annual HONK! Festival of Activist Street
Bands. In the growing global activist street band movement, the
emphasis is on individuality and a “DIY” sensibility, in
instrumentation and especially attire - often a warped / trippy
send-up of high school marching band uniforms and regalia.
This week's HONK! NYC festival has been New York's HONK aftershock, with a
slew of bands making musical mayhem in our streets, schools, a museum
and even some regular old clubs. And the HONK! NYC after-party is
live on WFMU tonight as this year's farthest-flung HONK legion,
Brazil's Os
Siderais, brings its uproarious din to our airwaves.
Massive thanks to HONK! NYC organizer Sara Valentine of Hungry March Band fame and Keka Marzagao for booking and chaperoning the band, respectively; and of course to our illustrious engineer Glenn Luttman and assistant / FMU uber-volunteer Tony Bonczkowski.
