Avatar 12:01pm Cecile:

Am I a special snowflake for preferring Tale of Mystery and Imagination to a lot of the Raven?

The music totally rocks, though.
Avatar 12:02pm slugluv1313:

HAPPY HALLOWE'EN, Diane!!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Just to really tear things up, you should do a Dr. Seuss reading today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Stevel:

Digging, digging, digging.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Mike Noble:

@Cecile - what's the nico swipe/wiki thing you were referring to in the last playlist? link me!
Avatar 12:05pm Joe B:

In case anyone is wondering, I messed up Diane's theme, so sorry! It may be my last act on this mortal coil!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm common:

Avatar 12:13pm Joe B:

VAZ is in the building1 getting it together as we speak!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Stevel:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Ken From Hyde Park:

All that's missing here are some jack-o-lantern pictures - www.shawnfeeney.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Mike Noble:

@Cecile - thanks! good to know
Avatar 12:16pm InBrkly:

Haven't heard Fuzztones in ages!
  12:23pm r i s k y:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm tim from champaign:

Yes! Samhain records are really hard to find these days. Wish I would have hung on to the ones I had. D'oh.

Hey kirk.
Avatar 12:24pm joshS:

can I request "They've won" from VAZ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Rich in Washington:

@Tim from champaign: I feel your pain. I had all three and traded them away eons ago. I think the ones I had are worth a bit more nowadays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm tim from champaign:

@Rich - yeah, the Samhain records could be found pretty cheaply up until the mid 90s. I wonder why Glenn hasn't re-issued them?
  12:32pm alberto:

yay!!! boss martians!!! turn it up...yep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Rich in Washington:

@Tim: Danzig is a mystery wrapped in an enigma. That and steroid-induced brain damage.
  12:33pm BDR:

Robert Pollard's birthday today should you want to play some.
Avatar 12:33pm Cecile:

greetings to vaz from Minneapolis.
Avatar 12:35pm Cecile:

Rich. LOL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Rich in Washington:

@Diane: this is an incredible show! Turning it up as loud as possible at work!
Avatar 12:36pm Cecile:

yeah, play GBV's Cut Out Witch.
Avatar 12:37pm InBrkly:

I was bummed that he pulled 12 hits from hell from the shelves. But I found a copy anyway :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Rich in Washington:

I blame Danzig for the preponderance of Woah Hos in today's pop music.
Avatar 12:38pm InBrkly:

IMO the tracks are superior to the versions most people have heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Rich in Washington:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm jdelz:

Stoked for VAZ!
Avatar 12:39pm Cecile:

Naked Raygun did their share of whoh whohing
Avatar 12:41pm Joe B:

The VAZ soundcheck is pretty great! gonna be a good one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Rich in Washington:

@Cecile: You are correct.
Someone should do a whole Woah ho show. Lot's of post-90s 'punk' bands could be in it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm tim from champaign:

Good one, Cecile. Throb Throb gets regular play on my stereo.
Avatar 12:43pm Cecile:

yeah, that would be fun show.
I think DJ Stashu has the European football chant disco whoh whohs tied up.
Avatar 12:43pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I dug the hell out of the Throb Throb LP, but Raygun went a bit Whoaverboard for me...
Avatar 12:43pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

also: greetings folks.
Avatar 12:45pm kirk from beer city usa:

hey tim - I dug the Samhain track too, great slow version of the Misfits' Halloween. I never had any Samhain LPs; for a while there I was dumb and bought CDs instead.
Avatar 12:46pm InBrkly:

I hope we hear some Rudimentary Peni today.
Avatar 12:46pm Cecile:

I liked All Rise and Understand? but not the way I liked the first albums.
Peacemaker is still a great song.
Avatar 12:47pm Cecile:

But Santiago Durango took his magic to Big Black after Throb Throb
Avatar 12:47pm joshS:

I thought this was the Doors.ha
  12:48pm Kurt Weill:

Really now.
  12:48pm Lotte Lenya:

I mean, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm tim from champaign:

hey kirk - November Coming Fire and Initium could easily be found at Vinyl Solution for $2.99. How's Vertigo these days?
Avatar 12:49pm Dr. Funkenstein:

Yes, even my dog get a record made about him.
Avatar 12:50pm Cecile:

My thread got hijacked!
Avatar 12:50pm Cecile:

Avatar 12:52pm kirk from beer city usa:

tim- Vertigo is a pretty great record store - more vinyl and less CDs all the time. I don't know if I've ever seen a Samhain record...
Avatar 12:52pm Joe B:

should be ready in about 10 minutes with the live set!
Avatar 12:54pm Cheri Pi:

I'm back from lunch, Dayumn!
Avatar 12:54pm kirk from beer city usa:

Avatar 12:55pm Cecile:

I LOVE THE FALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Avatar 12:58pm Cecile:

i wish the Onion would do an advice column written by Mark E. Smith.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Rich in Washington:

That would be BRILLIANT-UH, Cecile!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Rich in Washington:

There needs to be a slightly hipper, more obscure Onion. I've always thought that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Rich in Washington:

I have no idea where the extra colons are coming from. Plus, my heart has disappeared.
Avatar 1:01pm Cheri Pi:

Pretty sure this comment board serves as the hipper, more obscure Onion
Avatar 1:01pm Cecile:

Dear M.E. Smith:
How do I get his boy to like me?

MES - There are only 12 people in world, the rest are cardboard cut-outs, uh.
Avatar 1:01pm InBrkly:

it is the color scheme.
Avatar 1:02pm InBrkly:

if you select the comment column by dragging your mouse over it you will see what I mean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Rich in Washington:

Oh, I see it now. Thanks InBrkly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Rich in Washington:

Just like in real life: my heart is obscured by my color scheme.
Avatar 1:04pm InBrkly:

Avatar 1:04pm Whosondephone:

Avatar 1:05pm Cheri Pi:

same thing here Richard! I was scared for a moment
Avatar 1:05pm InBrkly:

For some reason I imagine Homer Simpson dancing to this song.
Avatar 1:07pm InBrkly:

Dickies! Gigantor!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm tim from champaign:

Excellent! My first Vaz live experience. I got to see Hammerhead 3 times.
Avatar 1:10pm Cecile:

raw power
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm jdelz:

This rules. Sounds great!
Avatar 1:11pm kirk from beer city usa:

oh man, I never saw hammerhead. I've seen vaz a couple of times, though.
Avatar 1:12pm joshS:

one of the best drummers in the biz.
  1:13pm mARIE:

From ME Smith to Cecile: Flash him the vag, love.
Avatar 1:13pm Cecile:

they have taken the mantle from Mission of Burma and wear it well.
Avatar 1:13pm Cecile:

hahahahaahhahahahah, marie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Rich in Washington:

Damn! This is pretty god damned awesome!
Avatar 1:14pm InBrkly:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm jdelz:

Can't wait to get the new LP. These tunes are fantastic!
  1:15pm mARIE:

I love those onion ideas. Taking it back to the Fall, here is food for thought: http://altmusic.about.com/od/top10lists/tp/Top-10-Albums-By-The-Fall.htm
Avatar 1:17pm Cecile:

I would ditch Frenz and never got into This Nation's Saving Grace, but man, those choices are excelllent.
Avatar 1:18pm Cecile:

and I gotta ask hubby for the live Fall Peel session box set.
Avatar 1:19pm Cecile:

If yoiu have three pop up players going at once, the effect is incredible on head phones.
Avatar 1:23pm InBrkly:

This one is reminiscent of something on Sister era Sonic Youth.
Avatar 1:25pm Cecile:

those guitars have a low, menacing growl
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm jdelz:

Mutant scum sludge
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Rich in Washington:

@jdelz: Yes. Well nomenclatured.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Rich in Washington:

Anybody remember when 'grunge' was used more as an adjective to describe music like this than it was used as a label to describe 70s cock rock influenced bands from Seattle (and everyone who moved to Seattle, post-93 or so)?
Avatar 1:31pm Cecile:

Yes.I used it a lot for people who played dirty-sounding guitars in the 80s. "Grungy" is what I would call them.
  1:33pm mARIE:

I'm sure some nerdy music critic appropriated it. The fashion worlld went crazy with it--took it literally.
Avatar 1:33pm InBrkly:

Amphetamine Reptile is such a great label.
Avatar 1:36pm kirk from beer city usa:

somebody let Vaz know that they sound great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Jason:

Vaz is sounding so good!
  1:39pm Ishmael Isenglass:

Listening in from Copenhagen - this rulez. Saw Hammerhead live in Copenhagen a long time ago. Bought a 7" at the show which was signed "Freedom Village is boring and it sucks". Still have it.
Avatar 1:40pm InBrkly:

It reminds me of the days when MRR & Flipside would have pages of letters of people argueing and bitching about the words Alternative and Indie.

It is funny how nobody wants to be labeled/pigeonholed, but everybody also wants to be part of something...to belong to some scene. Good luck with that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Stevel:

Going to what?
Avatar 1:41pm kirk from beer city usa:

Voivod helps with the post-Vaz depression...
Avatar 1:41pm PKNY:

Avatar 1:43pm Joe B:

wow, that was great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm Carmichael:

Rip that throat out!!
Avatar 1:46pm Cecile:

Avatar 1:47pm Cecile:

that and the Blind Shake this week. Whoooh.
Avatar 1:49pm Cheri Pi:

VOIVOD! Belated due to the damn mailman.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Mike East:

anybody remember in cartoons when they'd want to play spooky music, they'd put a wavy record on the turntable? Do those actually exist?
Avatar 1:49pm Cecile:

I am so sick of this terrible war.
Avatar 1:50pm dale:

@ mike - we just left a record in the car by accident and it looked like that.
Avatar 1:52pm dale:

i was trying to figure where i knew billion dollar babies from - dan fogelberg 'borrowed' it for 'tell me to my face' on his twin sons of different mothers album.
  1:52pm tom:

Great!!! Diane Kamikaze on Halloween! What a lucky WFMU DJ! How lucky WE are! Rock on Diane!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Mike East:

@dale - did you try to play it? did it sound spooky?
Avatar 1:55pm kirk from beer city usa:

great show, diane.
Avatar 1:55pm dale:

no, sounded normal unless the bow was so bad that the needle wouldn't track and then it would just slide all over.
Avatar 1:55pm Cheri Pi:

On my way back from lunch I saw a fellow standing out fron the tattoo parlor with a Kerry King replica beard, aka "Skerry King" for halloween. oh the kids these days.
Avatar 1:56pm Cheri Pi:

Death Angel!
Avatar 1:57pm InBrkly:

It is like the ring in a bulls nose. If he gets ornery you just pull.
Avatar 2:02pm Luna:

erg, missed everything, haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Rich in Washington:

I love Halloween because it makes all the music I normally listen to sound appropriate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Carmichael:

There's nothing subtle about this Craft song. NOTHING.
Avatar 2:10pm Cecile:

Craft is one of theb ands I got wrong on Ikea or Death?

Still I am true kvlt.
Avatar 2:11pm Cheri Pi:

Craft is on my extensive list of "Pappy" bands that I plan on turning into a book one day.
Avatar 2:15pm Cecile:

didn't Naked Raygun have a song called Murder?
Avatar 2:17pm InBrkly:

This show never fails to rock! Well there was that one time but it was someone else's fault..
Avatar 2:20pm Cheri Pi:

Meatloaf would murder for this guy's vocals.
Avatar 2:23pm kirk from beer city usa:

Vaz impersonating the Mummies tonight??
Avatar 2:23pm Cecile:

witch rock!
Avatar 2:24pm Cheri Pi:

Flute tinged!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Carmichael:

Ya dude, blame it on your brother. Maybe the next song will be called Evil Twin.
  2:25pm ScottC:

I saw Death Angel at Ruthies Inn in Berkeley around 1982 and the drummer was really young. He was so small that you couldn't even see him behind his trap set. Every few seconds a hand would appear above and crash the symbols - funny sight.
Avatar 2:28pm InBrkly:

oh man, Berkeley hasn't had a venue for ages and ages. Well 924 Gilman sure but all the great clubs shut down long ago.
  2:31pm ScottC:

@InBrkly Yah, I'm an old man now and don't get out much but your right. Completely different thing now. Wes Robinson died and the east Bay scene went with him... too bad.
Avatar 2:33pm Cecile:

I hear that it is so expensive there to have a club.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm tim from champaign:

Never really heard Alien Sex Fiend before. A lot more Cramps and a lot less goth than I was expecting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Carmichael:

The Prunes were great back in the day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm Rich in Washington:

Later ASF is a little more electronic infused but no less manic. While relatively unknown in mainstream circles, their singer looks a helluva lot like how that Brian Warner worm ended up looking like when he became Marilyn Manson.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Rich in Washington:

The Prunes were the Alien Sex Fiend of the sixties.
Avatar 2:37pm Cecile:

Oh, I don't doubt it, Rich.
I never found anything particularly original or even all that personal about Mr. Manson.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm Rich in Washington:

MM is like equal parts Genesis P. Orridge, Boyd Rice, Rozz Williams from Christian Death, Peak-era Ministry, Post-peak era Butthole Sufers (sound-wise) and -as everyone says - Alice Cooper.
He's a Frankenrockstar. Really nothing original about him at all. Unless he dies some novel death we haven't thought of yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm common:

Thanks for the bauhaus, Diane. Perfect for today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Rich in Washington:

Yes, Diane. For me, it isn't Halloween without hearing this song.
Avatar 2:43pm Cecile:

I think someone should do a rockabilly version of this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm tim from champaign:

Dirtbombs borrow the intro to Bela Lugosi for their cover of Sly's "Kung Fu".
Avatar 2:46pm Cecile:

that's a Curtis Mayfield song. A good one, and a good cover, too.
Avatar 2:48pm northguineahills:

yeah, perfect.....!
Avatar 2:49pm joshS:

Poison Idea covers "Bela Lugosi's dead" on Pig's Last Stand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm tim from champaign:

You is right, cecile.
Avatar 2:54pm northguineahills:

I like the orange on orange font in the comments.
Avatar 2:54pm Cecile:

OK, I have to put this on a playlist for my husband.
Avatar 2:55pm Cecile:

speaking of whoh ohs.
Avatar 2:56pm Cheri Pi:

Ooo I love this song!
Avatar 2:56pm Cecile:

THANK YOU. I was hoping for some GIRLSCHOOL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Rich in Washington:
