The Wingdale Community Singers live on WFMU

Live performance by The Wingdale Community Singers

Led by the core of Hannah Marcus, David Grubbs and Rick Moody, The Wingdale Community Singers return for a third round with another album of nearly heartbreaking beauty. The Wingdales' seemingly simple songs have an underlying emotionalism that really tugs at the listener's soul. Walt Whitman becomes an unexpected lyricist as his poetry forms the basis of a three-song Whitman sampler at the center of the album, including the title song, "Night, Sleep, Death, and the Stars." The Wingdale Community Singers, joined by the newest member Tessa Jones, played live from WFMU's "Love" room.

Olivia Chaney live on WFMU

Live Performance by Olivia Chaney

Irene was also joined by British singer-songwriter Olivia Chaney, whose intensely personal music at times echoes Nick Drake and Sandy Denny. Chaney is equally at ease on the acoustic guitar, elegantly reworking music by folks like Bert Jansch all the way back to Henry Purcell, and can be equally moving on harmonium and piano. Olivia has performed with Alasdair Roberts, and was recently signed to Nonesuch Records. Olivia Chaney dropped by WFMU in advance of an evening show Monday November 4th at Rockwood Music Hall.

Does appear a tangled bit of "brainy" vegetation apropos of the setting in the photo.

Yes, isn't that wierd

Good morning from Tucson. We are now an hour closer - or is that further away? Love the morning melodies Irene. Maybe the Wingdale Singers hail from upstate Wingdale, NY.

Very UNtangled, simply sweet music though.

Ken From Hyde Park:

I used to pick blueberries at the farm at the top of the hill in Wingdale (along County Road 21). I think the owner died because it's not open to the public anymore. Also rode bikes up & over that hill a few times. It was quite a workout.

I just assumed that Wingdale, NY, was the reference since Rick Moody is from Connecticut. By the way, if you ever find yourself in Wingdale, do yourself a favor and stop at Big Ws for barbecue. Truth.

Was it a fine fete for all?

Hi Sean! Lovely here in the desert. Warm days, cool nights. No reason not to be out on my bike right now. Except I'm listening to the radio.

@Ken From Hyde Park: now that you mention it, Wingdale might have been where we traveled as school kids from Po'keepsie to pick blueberries many decades ago. I also pedaled my bicycle over the hill out there - beautiful cycling country.
