re: backgrounds

Firefox has a plugin named 'Greasemonkey" that makes changes pretty easy. You can create a new one for the namespace 'http://www.wfmu.org' with a one liner: "$('body').css({'background': '#black'});" to make the bg black and toggle it at will.

Avatar 5:28pm
northguineahills:

Wow, Fab, thanks.....your shit is always awesome, but the meandering Nick Drake is verily welcome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

@dale: I would much rather learn about new music from WFMU than commercials, but I first found several artists through commercials, including the "Pink Moon" VW commercial--what a strange, haunting yet breezy acoustic piece. Rolling Stone IDed him by name based on that commercial, and a world opened up to me.

In fact before I "tuned in", that was the *main* way of finding really good artists (VW commercials from the early 2000s, Nick Drake, Trio, ELO) and even Vashti Bunyan from some advert shortly after one of her reissues.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm
Matt from Springfield:

@tim: It's a great anthology. There have been so many reissues since then I can't keep track, but Time of No Reply is a great collection.

@NGH: "Meandering"! Another great descriptor for Nick's style. I like the term "sparrow's whisper voice" used for his vocal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm
dale:

matt - i had other music in the village, so was pretty spoiled learning about 'new' artists
Avatar 5:33pm
northguineahills:

@MAtt: Same for me. The reissues came out about the same time, and the Wire also starting making noise about him. It was a perfect storm.

Related, that minimalist (in pop proportions) group, Arp, came to my attention via a commercial. I can't stand that song b/c of it, but their (his) other stuff totally works for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm
dale:

is other music still there? i used to go there after a few drinks and spend a hundred bucks no problem - oh, to have a regular job again
  5:34pm
LovecraftDude888:

I'm a massive Nick Drake fan. Met Joe Boyd in May at the film screening he did at Nitehawk Cinemas in WBurg. was keen!
He signed my Fruit Tree box set, Sandy Denny box etc. I was like, far out!
Avatar 5:34pm

i was also introduced to him by those VW commercials... hard to find interesting music in pre internet, record store free suburbs...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm

I'll get some whisky and toast to you, Nick. RIP.
  5:35pm
LovecraftDude888:

I notice Spotify offers the digital complete Nick Drake box now, with more recent discoveries and Tow the Line and the later discovered tracks, etc. and family tree tracks, etc. Thank God I bought Fruit Tree when I did! it's getting expensive.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

@steve: You got my number: "pre-internet, record store free, suburbs". At least certain creative commercials, though commercial in nature, open up great art to "the Great Un-connected", pardon mon français.

@LovecraftDude: That is keen! Peachy-keen! Without Sandy or Nick here, Joe Boyd is a great person to meet and sign those albums.
  5:37pm
LovecraftDude888:

Other Music gets some bad raps but I like it, I haven't been
inside there in a few years though.
  5:39pm
LovecraftDude888:

yeah it was great to finally shake hands with Joe Boyd,
one of my heroes of course. I also met Robyn Hitchcock
again 2 yrs. ago when he and Joe did the spoken word
and music show at Le poisson rouge. robyn liked my "black
Ray Bans" hanging on my shirt..."I like those glasses"!hiaha!hoo hoo
  5:40pm
Dark Cloud:

I would gladly give two years of my life to Nick Drake...if it were only possible.
  5:40pm
LovecraftDude888:

I asked Joe Boyd though if he'd heard of Winter Hours, the band,
and he hadn't!! I was bemused. puzzled. It's too bad since it would have been cool if he'd have had produced them years ago. Ah well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm

I don't buy many CDs lately, but I still stop by Other Music for old times' sake and browse whenever I'm near E. 4th St. It reminds me of the 90s when there were record stores all over the Village. Sigh.
