Our youngest daughter was born with a caul.
Avatar 9:17am northguineahills:

Darn, so many people chimed in, I can't even copy-paste common's salutational comment.

I love dead air, even when Ken does it intentionally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Guido (Cologne):

Hello everyone!
Does "Grass Above My Head" mean "I'm dead and comfortable in the grave"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Scott McDowell:

Ken asked me if it was intentional..haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Scott McDowell:

Think so guido.
  9:21am jj.:

great segue!
Avatar 9:23am Cheri Pi:

Shalomie my homies.
Avatar 9:23am Polk Biggins:

So I have had lower back pain all week and just this morning I am debating whether or not to take muscle relaxers. This set confirms it: Yes. Great stuff, Scott.

Who you calling a nerd, Scott?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Scott McDowell:

You, man. You.
Avatar 9:41am braveness23:

B23 here. Hello Scott! Hello WFMU Friendship Society. Sorry I am late but I had an overwhelming need to listen to The Swan's - Children of God this morning and had to get it out of my system.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am tim from champaign:

Fair enough, Scott.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am tim from champaign:

Oh wow, I saw Daniel Bachman on Tuesday night. He played at a little art gallery in Champaign. He was amazing. His guitar tone sounded so good.
Avatar 9:43am Cecile:

hiya polk, all!
Avatar 9:44am Cecile:

any relation to Randy Bachman (who is a fine fingerstyle guitarist in his own right)?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Scott McDowell:

not apparently.
Avatar 9:47am northguineahills:

Thanks Scott! When I get to the office, I'll turn over to Doug. Old school Fridays were so hard to choose. Salud!

  9:48am as:

love fri mornings with TLR
Avatar 9:49am Cecile:

I am unsure about where they are travelling to. ;)
Avatar 9:50am Cecile:

oh, jeez! Now that I have work wi-fi, I can now listen to the GTS stream during the day. Wow. Shit just got real.
  9:54am mb:

Oh man. That Sun Ra hit the spot. Never heard that vers. So soothing and life affirming after hearing your theme song skip earlier. That was disturbing.
  9:56am as:

scott at the record fair you should look for a copy of jackie mclean's hipnosis, I actually found it a couple years ago as a double lp blue note release from the late '70s paired with a '62 session w/ sonny clark
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Scott McDowell:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Scott McDowell:

I tried to play a file from my computer today and for some reason my computer wouldn't play. So I have a skipping CD, a CD-r burn that also skips, and a computer that won't play. Vinyl is the clear answer. Finally.
Avatar 9:59am doca:

that only confirms that vinyl rules, scott
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am DCE:

pfft, technology, amirite?
Avatar 10:03am Polk Biggins:

Love Hamid Drake. It is SO hard to keep up with that free jazz scene. So many great releases on so many labels.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am tim from champaign:

@ Polk - I've been fortunate enough to have seen Hamid Drake play twice this year.
Avatar 10:05am doca:

I had an ambientalist impulse a few days ago and I thought if the vinyl resurgence does not means that music fans are getting even more oil dependent than before? I mean, I want the planet to get rid off in some way of non-clean fuel, and only now I realized this has an impact upon my buying and listening habits. I thought I was saving the world buying vinyls.
Avatar 10:06am doca:

the last sentence was kinda ironic, obviously.
  10:08am van:

oh, hey
Avatar 10:09am Polk Biggins:

@tim from champaign Nice! The last cool free jazz set I caught was Matthew Shipp + William Parker. Really intense.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Andrew Waterloo:

@doca, sorry doca. if you really want to save the world digital is the only way to go.
Avatar 10:10am bobdoesthings:

hmm digging this!
Avatar 10:11am doca:

@Andrew: <o>
Avatar 10:11am doca:

@Andrew: but there's the fuel-cost to generate electrical power to keep the computers up and running, not to mention fabricating them. I guess I'll just stick to vinyl whenever I can.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Andrew Waterloo:

@Polk, I was blown away by Matthew Shipp when I saw him with Darious Jones a couple years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am common:

hello guitars! holy shit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am tim from champaign:

Hey Andrew - I got the answer for you about repairing record jackets. I'll dig it up and post it in a second.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Ike:

@B23@9:41, I heard a strange noise. It was… screaming. Some kind of screaming, like a child's voice. I went downstairs, outside. I crept up into the barn. I was so scared to look inside, but I had to. I saw... apostrophes. And they were screaming. All the apostrophes you've abused lately! HAVE THE APOSTROPHES STOPPED SCREAMING, B23?
Avatar 10:14am doca:

I suggested my by now girlfriend to see Matthew Shipp when she lived in Lisbon last year. She didn't knew it and said she didn't even thought music like that could exist. I enjoyed the way she spoke of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Ike:

First I tried to free the apostrophes. I… I opened the gate to their pen, but they wouldn't run. They just stood there, confused. They wouldn't run. ...I took one apostrophe, and I ran away as fast as I could. I thought, I thought if I could save just one, but… he was so heavy. So heavy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am DCE:

everytime I hear Chris Forsyth I love it more
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am DCE:

heavy apostrophes, eh...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am tim from champaign:

Hey Andrew: "For the jacket, just using an Elmer’s glue stick should work. Would use a flat head screwdriver or other flat tool to apply the glue by working it down along the seam. The key here is to then apply enough pressure so that excess glue comes out...wiping it away with a damp paper towel. Then use some heavy objects and place on top of the jacket so the glue dries (probably could use something like office binder clips as well, but these may not provide equal pressure along the entire edge)."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Andrew Waterloo:

@tim, 1000 thousands thanks for remembering
Avatar 10:19am Polk Biggins:

@Andrew Waterloo @doca Seeing Shipp is a revelation. He elevates piano playing to some kind of primordial art.
Avatar 10:21am doca:

@Polk: I wish I have already seen him, unfortunately I never went abroad and he never came to Brazil (or to Porto Alegre). I've seen Ken Vandermark, Mats Gustafsson and Peter Brötzmann thought. But that's a short list for a free jazz enthusiast
Avatar 10:23am braveness23:

@Ike, I've been on prednisone for 2 1/2 months now. THE APOSTROPHES HAVEN'T STOPPED SCREAMING EVEN FOR A MINUTE!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Scott McDowell:

Avatar 10:28am Polk Biggins:

@doca LOVE Brotzmann/Vandermark/Gustafsson...if only I lived in Chicago it would be so much easier to catch those cats!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am DCE:

yeah, I hope Bryce had time to put together a little tribute to Bernard for today's show
Avatar 10:31am doca:

@Polk: only now I realized I have seen 3/10 of the Chicago Tentet. Chicago is a place I would like to visit, I guess.
Avatar 10:34am Kurt Gottschalk:

nice to have you visiting fridays! sorry i won't be out there to see you in person.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am common:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Scott McDowell:

Cheeers Kurt will see you at the fair this eve.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am tim from champaign:

@doca - you should definitely visit Chicago. The jazz scene is pretty dang impressive. There's lots of world class jazz musicians, regular performances, lots of support and most importantly the shows are usually affordable. $5-$10.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am I.K.E. (Ice King Enterprises):

@B23, is prednisone that bad? I'm wondering if I'm inevitably headed to there. Just UC here, not Crhn's... so far.
Avatar 10:43am doca:

@tim: *.*
Avatar 10:47am braveness23:

@I.K.E. Prednisone is a miracle drug that has saved my life repeatedly and it makes me completely batshit crazy. Being on a large dose makes me act like a coke addict and then tapering down and trying to get off of it makes me act like... well, a coke addict. The fact that I still have friends after 2 1/2 months of being on this shit really says something about my friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am DCE:

Scott can see our faces!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am tim from champaign:

@doca - also check listings for gigs in the Chicago Reader for when you're in the mood to drool over awesome shows. www.chicagoreader.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am fred:

"outremer" means "beyond the sea". Its most common use in france is to refer to islands still controlled by france, remnants of its colonial empire
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Andrew Waterloo:

I believe another appropriate translation for outremer would be overseas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Ken From Hyde Park:

Good show today. I must bust out from home and head to work now. Will listen on 90.1 FM if the signal is strong enough for the car antenna. Have a good weekend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am common:

have a fine weekend ken!
Avatar 11:03am Sem Chumbo:

Apropos nothing other than the FMU Record Fair, this NYT piece about the collecting 100 versions of the White Album, some of which will be on sale at the Fair: artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com...
Avatar 11:03am doca:

@tim: I went out of the comment board so I do not get depressed on all the shows I'm missing eheh does anyone can offer me a good paying job so I can go to Chicago? In time, thanks for the tip, I like to keep up with shows from the places where the music I listen comes from
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Scott McDowell:

Got a phone call that Outremer means "Ultramarine" and refers to the color pigment t hat was commonly used in renaissance painting! Wow! cool fact.
Avatar 11:08am doca:

@Scott: those "pure" colors are beautiful, specially on a medieval setting like those of books of hours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Mike East:

Man, I am excited as a kid on christmas eve to go to the record fair tomorrow. Happy Friday, everybody.
Was a nice surprise this morning to flip on 91.1 to dead air this morning...a moment of dispair...followed by Hipnosis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Scott McDowell:

Avatar 11:12am Keili:

Greetings from Chicago!
Thanks so much Scott for filling in for me!
And all of you going to the record fair this weekend, I'm trying to contain my tears... have fun for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Scott McDowell:

That is the wikipedia page for Ultramarine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Ike:

Wow, B23, wow. Well, say hi if you see me at the rec fair. I'll be v-teering tomorrow, name tag affixed.
  11:17am Lore:

Some great footage of that William Parker / In Order to Survive track here, focusing on Cooper-Moore's solo: http://vimeo.com/44170876
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Scott McDowell:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am tim from champaign:

Aw crap. I'm starting to get the Friday squirrelyness. Either too much caffeine or else it must be beersie time.
  11:22am tomasz.:

dug that wild jazz you were playing earlier, we were loading boxes of LPs and it was very bracing and motivational
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am fred:

@tim: it's always beersie time somewhere
Avatar 11:23am dk:

that Sajida Obeid track was nuts. if that's what qualifies as "folk & pop" in iraq, i'd love to hear their idea of "face-melting psych freakout".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Scott McDowell:

Wild, right? It almost seems fake!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am BDR:

Just tuned in, it's like the old days, so much wish /hope this is your regular slot again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am common:

yea. yea!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Ike:

Groovy, Scott, groovy.
Avatar 11:46am Chris from DC:

Wow, this Death Rattle thing is great. Much to catch up on in the archive.
  11:47am Dean:

Heard P N-L with Brotzmann last Friday at a restaurant in uptown Oakland. Spectacular. He's all over the drums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Scott McDowell:

Shit's real.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am tim from champaign:

@ Dean - Did Paal NL have a magic bag of percussive items which he pulled from throughout the set?
Avatar 11:49am Chris from DC:

Seen him a few times, what a great drummer.
  11:49am Sandy in Houston:

that Death Rattle thing is the best thing I've heard in a while. I got a Death Rattle guitar pedal from Henry Kaiser I wonder if it is named for that?
  11:53am doca:

Thanks once again, Scott, I hope you'll be back on the new schedule
  11:53am Dean:

@tim - Maybe so. At one point for a stretch PB held back and PN-L shuffled his bare hands and a random object or two over the skins.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am tim from champaign:

Yeah, that sounds about right, Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Scott McDowell:

Gotta give props to twitter.com... for turning me on to the Plotkin/NL!
  11:58am Dean:

Not the Oakland show, but at about 10:20 he resorts to bare hands: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MB8cnYrgF8
