Décimas: Music and Poetry of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, with Raquel Z. Rivera and Bryan Vargas

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Raquel Z. Rivera and her group Ojos de Sofía are giving new life to a very old Hispanophone Caribbean poetic form, the décima. They're bringing contemporary lyrical and instrumental flair to the 500-year-old décima and the earthy musical styles it has long inspired, like Puerto Rican jibaro music and old-school Dominican bachata.

Ojos de Sofia will show off their old/new creations at a couple of free workshops in early December and a concert at St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery Performance Space on E 10th St. Sunday afternoon December 8th.

Raquel and Bryan Vargas from Ojos de Sofia stop by today to introduce us to this ancient form and show us how they're turning it into something very new.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm Kristina Koffee:

Woah what is this rendition of Makedonsko devojce?
  7:53pm Bar:

...better late then ever? How's today's show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm Kristina Koffee:

Not credited as such on the playlist but that was a Macedonian folk song composed relatively recently in the traditional style. Heard that one a lot growing up.
  8:12pm Bar:

If i may suggest a sound like Omar, i would say Amr Diab. Do you know him, Rob?
  8:16pm marmalade kitty:

Super show, Rob! Thanks
  8:21pm Meghan:

Really enjoying these sounds. Such a different sound
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm Rob W:

Hi Bar, yes, Amr Diab would have been a nice segue from Omar, in fact that track was a little more like Egyptian pop in terms of tempo and perhaps rhythm than a lot of Omar Souleyman's other material, but ah well, we've moved on!
  8:24pm Bar:

That pop reminded me of Amr Diab. Surely moved on. Keep up the good work.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Ken From Hyde Park:
