This song (Second Salutation) kind of reminds me of one of the guitar/bass instrumentals from Captain Beefheart, like "One Red Rose That I Mean" or "Dali's Car". I love that kind of stuff.

It’s nice even if meaningless. Good work.

Hi Faye! Nice to hear the Mazzy Star, I've grown to really like it over the years. The Day Ravies song was quite wonderful.

JakeGould:

Why Jerry Lewis now & not Simon, Pacific Non-Standard?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm

Jerry just seems like someone who would say "hello" to the "Hello-Children-lady" in a particular way that I like.

@Bar - You asked what I was baking during Rob's show. It's banana/pineapple bread. Now cooling on the counter. Smells pretty good.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Like I am infallible. My delicious banana bread is toasty done on the outside and still doughy inside. It'll be dark & crunchy outside by the time the inside becomes done.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
pacific standard simon:

I confess that the majority of my FMU listening these days is on the Give The Drummer Radio webstream, and the new schedule removes one of my favorite DJs from the FM side of the station.
  10:42pm
JakeGould:

Ken, sounds like the temp is too high. Keep it at 275.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Ah, thanks, Jake. The recipe said 350.
  10:48pm
JakeGould:

Errr, just checked & my recipe for Apple Bread (same diff) and it says 300. Mixed up the meat cooking temp of 275 with the baking temp. Have a thermometer in your oven? Or just trusting the dial. Get a thermometer. Sounds like your oven is running too hot. Only way to explain the crusty outside & doughy inside.
  10:50pm
Bar:

may i say something? temperature is just a matter in a whole combination thing, you can play, with quantity of liquids and grains. The hotter the oven, more liquids you need to get a moisty bread for ex.
  10:51pm
JakeGould:

It all depends. Bar is right. If the mix is too moist that is a factor as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
pacific standard simon:

Could be a chemistry thing, too -- like trying to substitute milk for buttermilk.
  10:52pm

exactly

  10:59pm
Bar:

you welcome
  11:00pm
JakeGould:

You’re welcome. Ken, this is how I learn anything: I account for screwing up the first 1-3 times. Maybe I get better, but I should learn. By the 4th or 5th time things are going good, or I should just give up. I can make Apple bread. It’s not too hard. Try, try again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
pacific standard simon:

Luck and fun to you. Baking is my profession, and it always surprises me that so many good cooks find it intimidating, because it's not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I've seen a recipe that recommends substituting half the butter for yogart and 1/2 a cup of flower for rice flower, I think.. suppose to make it super moist with a crispier crust.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I may be inaccurate on those measures.

Ken, when starting off on your baking adventure, I find old Betty Crocker recipes a good starting point, they are proven and basic, each cake or loaf provides new opportunities for experimentation one step (or ingredient substitution) at a time. This is a great time of year to experiment 'cause you can gift all your experiments. The first pumpkin pies I gave away were atrocious (but I thought they were good).

Ahmad:

This is like...if Beach House were not boring.
  11:40pm

Also, not to sound corny but some of the best simple recipes come from the manufacturers of ingredients. They genuinely spend effort on getting decent & simple recipes together so you can buy their stuff.
