the Pres said his first political act was involvement in protests against apartheid. I was slightly too young to know what to do at that point but I vividly remember the "shanties" set up on college campuses and being impressed. I think these protests contributed to the eventual wave of change.

When 11-year-old me and my 13-year-old sister were entering the building, a big security guard looked down at us and said, in a mock scary voice, "Y'all don't put any bugs in there!"

The pretext for them was, in our gym class requirement, these pictures would be graded on our posture and given pointers on what we need to have better posture. I remember being VERY uncomfortable and unhappy about it all, and it certainly was one factor in quitting Brown after only a year.

From a piece in today's NY Times about Mandela's visit to New York:

"The Yankee Stadium appearance took Mr. Mandela to the home of what was then one of the worst teams in baseball. The Yankees were in last place in the American League East after losing almost twice as many games as they had won. But they were on a road trip that week.

“Somebody had Yankee Stadium for several days and gave us one of the days, equipment and all,” Mr. Dinkins recalled. “I’m told when I put the Yankee cap and jacket around his shoulder and he said, ‘I am a Yankee,’ Steinbrenner was so pleased he called the next day and said, ‘There’ll be no charge.’”

By the way, the artist who had booked Yankee Stadium for several days and relinquished one for the Mandela? It was Billy Joel.

Yes. I have been here most of the time. I listen at work, and fortunatly I do IT work, so most communication is by using an instant message application and email, so I can listen in on my headphones, while getting all kinds of things done.
