Also, you folks with wintry weather send some down here! We're back to hot & humid (after several below freezing nights) & I just want it be winter. Period. Esp. as it's grey & rainy as well as hot & humid.

@kat330
Do worry, the sturm will blow over.

the Pres said his first political act was involvement in protests against apartheid. I was slightly too young to know what to do at that point but I vividly remember the "shanties" set up on college campuses and being impressed. I think these protests contributed to the eventual wave of change.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Doug Schulkind:

My first political activity was stuffing envelopes for McGovern. It happened to be in the Watergate building just a few weeks after the plumbers were arrested. When 11-year-old me and my 13-year-old sister were entering the building, a big security guard looked down at us and said, in a mock scary voice, "Y'all don't put any bugs in there!"
Avatar 9:49am dc pat:

great story DS
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Uncle Michael:

This might be the only place I've never bragged about this.

My dad was on the enemies list.
Avatar 9:50am kat330:

@Doug: Maybe I got one of those envelopes, though probably not as a registered Independent. But McGovern was my first vote cast for a US President after arriving at voting age.
Avatar 9:51am kat330:

@UM: What did he do to incur RMN's wrath?
Avatar 9:52am kat330:

And my first political activism I suppose was joining busloads from Brown U. to a November '69 anti-Vietnam war demonstration in D.C.
  9:52am marcury:

Good Morning to you all,and RIP to the greatest man of his time!
Avatar 9:53am earrie:

Well, here's looking at the more positive sides of this day. (Finland and education - what a concept!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Uncle Michael:

He was a major McGovern guy in Nebraska. His oldest brother was on the list too.

There were two lists. The A list were heavy hitters. That's the list Dan Schorr was handed on the air. Dad's not on that list. My family were on the longer B list.

My first political activism I'll admit to = caravans from Smith College to DC for pro choice rallies mid-late 80s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Doug Schulkind:

Hey hey Brother marcury!
Avatar 9:58am ndbob:

wow UM - a teacher from my high school was on the enemies list too - he was an independently wealthy guy who had given a lot of money to fight the SST
Avatar 9:58am Holly in NC:

Sadly we've gone so friggin' far backward I think I need to start doing the same again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Uncle Michael:

I recall my grandfather once grousing about apparently not having done enough to get on the list.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Doug Schulkind:

Here's a fun read while you're listening: talkingpointsmemo.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Jeff Golick:

By the US gov't's logic, in putting Mandela on the terrorist list, wouldn't the colonialists of 1775, in using violence against the state, also be terrorists? So we are a nation founded by terrorists. Got it.

Also MEV = YES.
Avatar 10:02am kat330:

@Holly: Hear, here! It sometimes boggles my mind when I think where we were -- or at least where we SEEMED to be -- in the late '60s, early '70s, and how I imagined humanity would evolve from that point forward. Definite backslipping. But, ya know, I'm an agnostic (bordering on atheism), but the current Pontiff is impressing my mightily. I have a post on Tumblr hoping for "Trickle Down Morality" discussing Francis' recent speeches.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
Consider this MEV a birthday present for your laddie.
Avatar 10:03am glenn:

funny, i think pope francis is pretty cool too. i'm pretty sure he's not turning out to be the guy the thought they were getting.
Avatar 10:05am dc pat:

exactly Jeff Golick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Doug Schulkind:

Frankly, any record that gives me the opportunity to correctly pronounce Frederic Rzewski's last name is a good record.
Avatar 10:06am kat330:

@glenn: Yes, and I sure hope he has a great security system and is very careful. There must be cardinals VERY uncomfortable with his positions.
Avatar 10:07am Lewis:

I share kat330's concerns
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Jeff Golick:

@kat330: Go Bruno. Was there myself on the tail end of the big divestiture protests of the late-1980s. Alas, I was too much an uptight New Englander to do much more than nod in silent assent.
Avatar 10:09am kat330:

Hey, Jeff -- are you still in Providence?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Jeff Golick:

@Doug: I thank you on his behalf. We offered him the day off from school on account of his turning 13, but he elected to go in anyway, thereby making it plain that we, his parents, are old and not that fun to hang out with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Uncle Michael:

I'm still thinking about hoarding Krugerands,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Doug Schulkind:

I share Lewis' concerns.
Avatar 10:11am Holly in NC:

@Kat330 - as a fellow agnostic/maybe atheist/maybe pagan/raised in the bosom of a deeply christian (congregationialist) household I feel you! As far as popes go, this one rocks. BUT he still has issues. BUT he's by far the best one I've ever seen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Jeff Golick:

@kat330: No longer. My gig at the Coffee Exchange on Wickenden ultimately couldn't pay the rent. I had a job based in NYC that took me up to Prov pretty regularly, though, which was fun. Have been in NYC since '91.
  10:11am marcury:

Gotta love ole frothy Rick!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Doug Schulkind:

The kid chose school over you? Classic dis from the 13-year-old's playbook!
Avatar 10:12am ndbob:

One thing I've noticed about WFMU - although I consider myself well left of center (mostly) I feel like a (relative) conservative here
Avatar 10:13am glenn:

it's pronounced stefski, no?
Avatar 10:13am dc pat:

but not just uncomfortable cardinals--this is opened up to right wing nutsoids everywhere. Bomb-proof pope mobile.
Avatar 10:13am kat330:

@Doug: Misogynist! ;)
@Holly: Yeah, I certainly have caveats with everything he espouses, but man, leaps and bounds ahead of any previous Pope. That alone is exciting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

One performer who is present in absentia on this track is Anthony Braxton. His spirit is just all over this. And I'm pretty sure each of these musicians (Berger, Curran, Lacy, List, Rzewski and Teitelbaum) have played with Braxton.
Avatar 10:14am dc pat:

watch it ndbob...
Avatar 10:14am kat330:

@Jeff: Ha! I played there, too -- at least I BELIEVE that was the name back then. I sang with the Chattertocks the year I deigned to pursue my scholarship, too.
Avatar 10:14am dc pat:

very Braxtonish.
Avatar 10:15am ndbob:

OK Pat:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Doug Schulkind:

@marcury
I would rename the title of this show "Ole frothy Rick" if not for the major disrespect for Mr. Mandela.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Doug Schulkind:

@glenn
Zhevski with the "zh" a kind of soft j sound.
Avatar 10:17am dc pat:

in other news, guess what I'm going to start making today!! That's right: a fruitcake. A relative loves them so I'm going to give it a shot. These things are drowned in booze, man. [and so will I..]

Avatar 10:19am kat330:

@Jeff: The actress, Jobeth Williams, was a Senior at Pembroke my Freshman year, and I worked with her in a Don Wilmeth production. Was Wilmeth still there when you were?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar 10:21am glenn:

god doesn't seem like the compromising sort to me.

Avatar 10:24am ndbob:

@kat for sure - a liberal oasis in a tea party area
Avatar 10:26am glenn:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Gary:

Logging in from work now. Forgive me if this was covered earlier, but is that your ticket, Doug, to see Mandela?
Avatar 10:27am Lewis:

@ndbob - are you still in nd or did you move further east?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Jeff Golick:

@kat330: Lived on Pembroke my frosh year. I don't recall the name Don Wilmeth, but the theatre folks always scared me - they were too cool, and I kept a safe distance. I did once meet fellow student Karyn Bryant at WBRU, though. She went on to become an early MTV vj.
Avatar 10:28am Holly in NC:

@ndbob - I fervently hope that the main thing you feel here is empathy, open-mindedness & a willingness to keep learning & exploring - unless, of course, one runs into a total d*ck! ;-)

OK, really have to go, super late for cross-legged & cancerous animals. No d*cks here, all love xo

@Jeff: Oh, yeah, we theater folk are scary as hell! ;) I lived in one of the old dorms -- Andrews Hall (maybe an east or west in front of that) -- and was on "bells" duty at another dorm for my work/study requirement of my scholarship. Bet they had dropped the whole "bells" silliness by your time. AND those AWFUL, invasive "proper posture" photos we women were forced to take in our underwear!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Jeff Golick:

@kat: Well, I don't think it's going on anymore, but even so...that it was ever a thing is just gross.
Avatar 10:46am kat330:

The pretext for them was, in our gym class requirement, these pictures would be graded on our posture and given pointers on what we need to have better posture. I remember being VERY uncomfortable and unhappy about it all, and it certainly was one factor in quitting Brown after only a year.

Ha ha ha, more jazz guitar, ha ha ha! This stringbender is George Freeman. The brother of Von Freeman and uncle of Chico Freeman.

@Doug: David Dinkins on WNYC now, talking about Mandela coming to NYC and declaring himself a Yankee at the stadium. That must've hurt a bit.

Just looked out to our backyard garden to see our sage and thyme encased in thin layer of ice. This year we're hoping our rosemary survives by giving them a "greenhouse" of vinyl covering.

hey, i have a question, all you smart types - does anybody know if wfmu fave jonathan kane is any relation to the great self taught pittsburgh painter john kane?

@Artie great idea we are five hours ahead over here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Doug Schulkind:

This Dinah track is heavily suggestive of Elaine Stritch singing "Here's to the Ladies Who Lunch" in Company.

@Jeff Golick
You can Google and find photos of Mandela in a Yankee cap and jacket. At least there's this: Steinbrenner picked up the tab for Mandela's evening at Yankee Stadium. I'm convinced his wearing the pinstripe paraphernalia is what moved The Boss to do so.

I came home from work, sat down in my favourite chair, turned on the TV, and said to my girlfriend, "Quick! Bring me a beer before it starts!"

She looked a little puzzled, but brought me a beer.

When I finished it, I said, "Quick! Bring me another beer! It's gonna start!"

This time she looked a little angry, but brought me a beer.

When it was gone, I said, "Quickly! Another beer! It's gonna start any second!"

"That's it!" She blew her top. "You bastard! You waltz in here, flop your fat ass down, don't even say hello to me and then expect me to run around like your slave! Don't you realise that I cook and clean and wash and iron all day long?"

I sighed. "Oh sh!t. It's started...."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Doug Schulkind:

From a piece in today's NY Times about Mandela's visit to New York:

"The Yankee Stadium appearance took Mr. Mandela to the home of what was then one of the worst teams in baseball. The Yankees were in last place in the American League East after losing almost twice as many games as they had won. But they were on a road trip that week.

“Somebody had Yankee Stadium for several days and gave us one of the days, equipment and all,” Mr. Dinkins recalled. “I’m told when I put the Yankee cap and jacket around his shoulder and he said, ‘I am a Yankee,’ Steinbrenner was so pleased he called the next day and said, ‘There’ll be no charge.’”

By the way, the artist who had booked Yankee Stadium for several days and relinquished one for the Mandela? It was Billy Joel.

Ok, two (belated) things:
(1) If Billy Joel had already booked the gig, why would there be an additional change for the Boss to waive?
(2) Do I have to like Billy Joel now? (Unless he gave up the stadium and the bill to the city?)
