@Jake I've worked in offices and blue collar atmospheres like yours. Funny thing is how each particular group expresses their blind sides. The professionals gloat in whispers and conspire to sabotage while the blue collar's act out in less subtle, physical ways. Life is a non-ending high school experience.

Dominance in any situation is deep rooted biological behavior and no real power is needed (see: oneupsmanship). Who's the alpha, is the question.

ottovonbqe:

I'm the alpha of this comment board, btw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm
Faye:

no me
  10:10pm
JakeGould:

Well, I am not that blue collar & the office-types I work with are not so much stiff. I actually like them & they like me. But I deal with coding and Unix system administration stuff. And you have to be open & straight shooting to be good at this kind of work. Because it’s “invisible” work. But the folks I am with are generally nice but I will get into conflicts of non-techs basically explaining how tech works. And my attitude is there is no power play on my side: This is just how the work gets done. Period. Don’t like what I am saying? Find someone else and then call me later when the think breaks. I’d be happy to clean that up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm

  10:12pm
JakeGould:

@Doca, people who play the power card in non-power situations… You just have to walk away from that. Just state your case & disengage. Otto, you are nothing but an underling. Now get your shine box!
Avatar 10:12pm
doca:

@fleep: I don't like to think this kind of competition has biological reasons, but I have to admit that whatever the "human" situation is, power or the perception of it is involved.
As of work spaces, I always think: why not do your work just fine and leave everyone at peace? As if the work didn't sucked already or had the potential to suck
Avatar 10:13pm
South Dakota Sombrero:

@doca It's more of protecting one's ego from injury, than it is about power where real power is absent (I think).

That's why I don't succeed in those situations, because I refuse to "kiss ass" or 'brown nose" to satisfy someones ego demands. it a great skill for success, no argument from me there.

I hear ya' Jake. Maybe youv've taken the Briggs Meyers personality profile? There are distinct personalities and without awareness it is hard to negotiate them all tactfully. I fail, that's MY personality :)

hey Faye, do you see a computer cable around there left over from Rob's show? thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
Faye:

hmm katie what kind of computer cable? there are a lot of cables
  10:15pm
JakeGould:

@WD-40/DuctTape: I will also say it’s taken me 20+ years to get to this point where I can stand toe-to-toe with those types, walk away & still be employed. I completely understand why people quit their jobs to make artisanal pickles & beer.
Avatar 10:16pm
doca:

@SDSombrero: Yes, I don't like it either, but I'm more embarrassed not by chiefs and people in power positions, but when work colleagues work against themselves.
I had the luck to work in a great team where complaints were made loud and not in the back, so when you were upset with something that had the most non-ego fighting aspect to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm

@doca Humans are animals. Animals have fight or flight reactions built in. The higher intellectual bullshit just masks it. It is the fight or flight reaction that created the Tea Party. Who's the alpha?

@kenzo Interesting what Danelle Berry observes about gaming creation, "Also, I resent the strangle hold the distribution channel has on design via their arbitrarily imposed genres and product categories."
That reminds me of the '80's' 'corporate rock' mentality equivalent in music. It's funny that the development group take the look of Allman Brothers too. :)

@WD-40/DuctTape: Good analogy. My first memories of computer games were buying them in ziplock bags hanging from racks at computer stores like Computer Center Manhattan & COMPUTEK in Brooklyn. And heck, I bought CASSETTES of games since that was the cheapest storage a 15 year old kid could afford.

P.S. I used cassettes for program storage. Never bought something on one, though. I wonder if my 1981 creations still load! I still have punchcards I made in the prior decade. I also still have a big reel-to-reel tape of a major system I developed.

Ahh! Kenzo! Yes, I know about the place you are talking about on Kings Highway. I still think it is a computer store now. In the map view it is now a "Photo Camera" place. goo.gl...

JakeGould:

Me and a friend went there to buy Pac Man for the 2600 back then. We were genuinely excited. When we took it home & played it, we were genuinely nonplused.

JakeGould:

Then there was this other video store & game store at one point on East 15th Street near Kings Highway. Forgive me for being so specific, but these places... Few people around now knew they existed then. My brain does still remember! goo.gl...

Yeah, Pac Man for the Atari 2600 was a complete and utter disappointment.

Funny, there was a photo place there back then. I think it was next door to the computer place. I almost remember the name (a guy's name, single syllable + 1 hour photo. Rob's?). Wow, it is amazing how much is unchanged across the street!

Why, yes, Faye, it is I. Whilst simultaneously being a Friend of This Show, I'm trying to impress upon Mr. Herweg that there can never be too much Brigitte Fontaine on WFMU's airwaves.

Thanks for the heads-up Faye. I didn't realize FMU music was downloadable, I just downloaded the Mantles from your show!

all I've ever wanted in the world was a situation in which an Adrian Tomine drawing was chatting with Miffy

Kenzo, I live in Bay Ridge now… Non-Brownstone Brooklyn is so disturbingly the same it’s like I took a time warp to 1985 at times.

Ahmad, thank you for playing out the I.T. scenario that every I.T. worker deals with at least once a day.

I remember liking 2600 Pac Man back then just because it was so unique. But I was playing it at other people's houses - never spent money on it.

Robert's Photo, that was it.

The kid I went to get 2600 Pac Man with was a bit of a neighborhood rich kid. He had an Atari 800 with a disk drive while I had a cassette drive. And he had a 2600. I was happy to play the bootleg cassette knockoff of Pac Man for the Atari 800 called, "Ghost Hunter" www.youtube.com...

Actually, that exact spot in Brooklyn was just on my mind 3 days ago, because I played a field recording I made walking around there, incl. sound of someone buying a token. See if you can find it: wfmu.org... - around 37:30 mark.

Hey Kenzo, wow. I have stuff to mull over this cold winter night. Still looking through the “late 80's authentic bike ride footage from Brooklyn to Manhattan.” Pretty sure I know that route & rode that route!
  11:50pm
JakeGould:

@Gaylord! That is a million dollar idea! Avatars that take on emotional tones! Think about it!
Avatar 11:50pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I call the bike video "authentic" because of the way the rider weaves around the cars and pedestrians like a daily obstacle course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm
Gaylord Fields:

@JakeGould: For example, if I were to "think about it," as you suggest, my avatar would have a furrowed brow.

JakeGould:

That video won't have it. That guy in the video is commuting from Brooklyn Bridge to lower Manhattan. No w watching this mid 1980s video. www.youtube.com...

@Gaylord, yes. Exactly! And maybe a lightbulb appears over it when you stopped thinking.

Great show as always. I appreciate the time you spend for show prep. This makes 2 times a band with Cbus connections has made your year's best list.
