Again I offer this invitation for you to enjoy three hours of the music/ian I love the most. (Sorry, but I couldn't pay to have it engraved.)
Avatar 🥁 8:56am duke:

Yay more Yusef. I really appreciate hearing Yusef in depth. One of my favorite things about WFMU and GTDS is this sort of attention to an artist.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:57am listener james from westwood:

morning, doug and all! cleaning day today, so mostly away from keys. yusef will be most welcome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01am Doug Schulkind:

Hi ndbob!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:05am listener james from westwood:

good. i'll need the whole battalion of supplies. of course, in 36 hr the place is gonna be overrun by preschoolers, so i'm basically dusting doilies ahead of an entropy stampede.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:05am Brian in UK:

Hello, Doug, Doug, duke, Doug, james, ndbob & Doug. Anything special planned?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:07am Brian in UK:

@james I cannot imagine 'dusting doiles' ever turning up in a Richard Brautigan novel.
Avatar 🥁 9:07am duke:

entropy stampede - I'm going to steal that phrase
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Doug Schulkind:

Oi oi oi, Brian in UK!
Avatar 9:14am northguineahills:

RIP Amiri Baraka
Avatar 9:14am glenn:

huh. what would the chuck wagon race at the entropy stampede be like?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Uncle Michael:

Good morning fiends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Doug Schulkind:

@NGH
No doubt I would otherwise be spending time honoring Baraka today. And the great trumpeter Roy Campbell, who just died suddenly. But today, my love for Yusef stands in for all loves combined.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:16am Brian in UK:

Clark 'n Yusef almost twins. Talking of which our twins girls have the same birthday as Yusef. You needed to know that.

I need to go out for bit - I will be back
Avatar 9:18am northguineahills:

arggghh, damnit, Roy Campbell too!!!!?
Avatar 9:19am glenn:

i hate to say it, duke, but the calgary herald is one of the worst newspapers in the history of newspapers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Doug Schulkind:

Hello man from Uncle M.I.C.H.A.E.L.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Doug Schulkind:

Has there ever been a badder-ass record title than "Boss of the Soul-Stream Trombone"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Doug Schulkind:

Yusef has switched from tenor sax to flute in order to pet the world like a purring kitten.
  9:22am lucy in brooklyn:

glad it is Friday and you can take me through a morning of hard -- I do not want to do it -- work...! loving this flutie -- happy in brooklyn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Doug Schulkind:

The dearly departed Freddie Hubbard on trumpet here. (Donald Byrd is up next.)

Hello happy Lucy!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:23am listener james from westwood:

glenn, if the kids do the chuck wagon thing, they're gonna run thru my cabinets, under my sink, and encounter my household toxins.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Doug Schulkind:

That composer credit mistake will be cleared up at song's end...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Doug Schulkind:

The bass player here, Ernie Farrow (Alice Coltrane's half-brother) is playing an Egyptian one-stringed instrument called a rebat (rebob). Yusef made it for him to play.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Doug Schulkind:

Cissy Houston and the Sweet Inspirations in the background here.
Avatar 🥁 9:47am duke:

Juba Juba - my favorite Yusef song off teh first jazz album I ever bought
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Doug Schulkind:

@duke
You ain't kidding. This was the first Yusef record I ever bought, too. My first love. So wild and soulful.
Avatar 🥁 9:50am duke:

Buddy Lucas on harmonica?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Doug Schulkind:

This song is dedicated to/inspired by early minstrel performer William Henry Lane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Doug Schulkind:

More about William Henry "Juba" Lane: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Doug Schulkind:

@duke
Yes! Buddy Lucas.
Avatar 9:56am northguineahills:

Juba, South Sudan?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Doug Schulkind:

The city name Juba may have been related to William Henry Lane's nickname. (It is not a stretch to imagine that black performers in the 1840s would be "given" nicknames with African references.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Doug Schulkind:

I am just guessing here that this is Douglas Ewart doing the circular breathing. Yusef was 85 when this was recorded. Could his lungs have handled this?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Doug Schulkind:

Definitely Yusef on flute here.
Avatar 🥁 10:14am duke:

@doug I also bought it as a cutout, great bargain
Avatar 10:15am northguineahills:

ahh, Master Juba was covered in Nick Tosches' "Where the Dead Voices Gather".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Doug Schulkind:

The audience participation on this live record (10 Years Hence) makes it even more of a treasure. It puts you thrillingly in the time and place of the performance, which all great live recordings do. This must have been one hell of a time and place to be.
Avatar 10:26am northguineahills:

This is a happy lively tune.
Avatar 🥁 10:29am βrian:

Socked in skies over the isthmus today. Halleluja, the face-spanking cold has passed. Good day, all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Doug Schulkind:

Things will take a fascinating turn with this tune. Massively funky. Buckle up people.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Andrew Waterloo:

I have plenty of ceiling today, won't be hitting my head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Uncle Michael:

It's during the potluck in the church basement you gotta watch your head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Doug Schulkind:

Make sure you get FAA clearance, then, Andrew W!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Andrew Waterloo:

It's like you never left.

@earrie
Always happy when you are here!
Avatar 🥁 10:52am βrian:

Dis Yusef have an experimental polka period?
  10:53am earrie:

(Er, 'beauteous'.)

And happy to be here and hearing and and.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Doug Schulkind:

@βrian
Isn't all polka experimental?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Doug Schulkind:

Q: Doug, in 30+ years on the radio, have you ever played Don McLean before?

A: Uh, no. No I haven't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Uncle Michael:

I'm glad to know that Don isn't persona non grata across all of WFMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Andrew Waterloo:

I can't imagine anyone being persona non grata on WFMU
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Doug Schulkind:

Exactly, Andrew Waterloo. As soon as someone is "off limits," it only makes me wanna play it more.

Next, set, folks: ALL GRATEFUL DEAD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Uncle Michael:

I hate to be a tease (no, actually I don't)...Mr. McLean factors into my upcoming Marathon DJ premium.
  11:05am Jaro:

Thanks Doug! This is all so great. I come to you via that Fiveash fella.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Uncle Michael:

Forman is doing Carol proud.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Doug Schulkind:

Greetings Jaro! Fiveash is the finest of the fine!
Avatar 11:06am northguineahills:

I've heard plenty of the Dead on WFMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Uncle Michael:

Plenty implies enough! Forfend.
Avatar 11:08am Carmichael:

Good morning Douglas and all the ears near the speakers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Doug Schulkind:

Carmichael and Uncle Michael. I wonder if they're related.

Morning Carm!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Doug Schulkind:

Yusef was not performing live in concert with Ms. Phillips. He and the horn section were dubbed in later.
Avatar 11:13am Carmichael:

Spiritually, perhaps. And you've never seen us in the same room at the same time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Alex In Illinois:

Hi everyone. Hi Carmichael.
How come Michael is the only archangel that gets a car? There's no Cargabriel, Carraphael or Caruriel. I have heard of a Carariel though.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:15am Brian in UK:

Any further comments will be dubbed on later in the public bar. My money is on this show extending to next Dec 23rd. Good work, boss.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Doug Schulkind:

Imagine Yusef standing there alone in the booth, headphones on playing Esther back in his ears, flute in hand...

@Alex in Illinois
EXCELLENT point.
Avatar 11:19am still b/p:

So when we were teenagers, a guy I knew used the number of the JT version of You've Got A Friend from the youth lounge jukebox as a shorthand check-in/inquiry regarding fondness and palhood reassurance. "G12?," he'd ask, "G12....?" Not requesting or promising the song itself -- just code for "That's the deal with us, right?" He did not toss it at me, and the period in which he did this with others was mercifully short.
Avatar 11:19am northguineahills:

Gotta run for a bit. Superbly awesome, Doug, thanks!
Avatar 11:20am Carmichael:

BTW, nice LP autograph, Doug! Someday I'll tell you the funny story behind my autographed Taj Mahal LP Oh So Good 'n' Bluesy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Doug Schulkind:

Here is the story of when I got Yusef's autograph: blog.wfmu.org...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

Well then that's ANOTHER thing that Richard Feynman and I have in common.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Boss of the Soul-Stream Metrocard:

Hi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

@Metrocard
Hey dude. I hear you're being phased out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Metrocard:

Sad but true. I work much too flawlessly now to be of much use to anyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Uncle Michael:

I pronounce it Nick-Lowe-style.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Uncle Michael:

From now on, we shall call you EZ Pass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Doug Schulkind:

True story: I was back in NYC eary last year (for the WFMU marathon, I think) and I was rushing to get to the station from where I was staying in Ridgewood. Well, I went down the stairs into the subway and encountered one of those "no live MTA worker" entrances with only a set of vertical turnstyles between me and the platform. Well I slide my Metrocard once, twice, a hundred damn times and it wouldn't work. I KNEW I had cash on it, and was missing trains trying to get the damn thing to engage the contact strip correctly. Enraged, I dashed up and out and over a few blocks and down another entrance to the same station. It was then that I realized, with the help of tourist signage, that I had been sliding the fucking card with the magnetic stripe on the wrong side. Fuck fuck fuck! Though this all happened essentially in private, I will never be able to remove the stain of humiliation. (Not that it would be humiliating for anyone who doesn't know. But for me, it only served to emphasize the distance I had traveled in becoming an ex-longtime New Yorker.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Uncle Michael:

At least you can take comfort in the knowledge that the security cameras recorded your rage.
Avatar 11:43am still b/p:

That's not just a strip tease, that's a strip TASE.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Doug Schulkind:

hey-OH!
