will this whole hour be devoted to songs about bridge?

Hello glenn and Gary! Git your Dramamine ready.
Avatar 5:55pm glenn:

i play bridge. not a lot of folks do these days.

On yer horse, Listener James!

That was my alternative title, hyde!
Avatar 6:04pm hyde:

side note: as I am sadly unable to come play live on Friday mornings anymore, I have to note here on Tuesday night that the Lateef tribute shows are immense and amazing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Doug Schulkind:

This next one is thanks to listener glenn!

ty Glenn!
Avatar 6:05pm glenn:

oddly enough, there aren't that many jokes in which bridges feature.

A man had just been laid off from work. He was standing on the railing of a high bridge getting ready to jump off, when he happened to look down and see a little man with no arms dancing all around on the river bank below.

He thought, "Life isn't so bad after all," and got off the railing.

He then walked down to the river bank to thank the little man for saving his life.

"Thank you," he said. "I was going to jump off that bridge and kill myself, but when I saw you dancing even though you have no arms, I changed my mind."

"Dancing? I'm not dancing!" the armless man replied bitterly ... "My asshole itches, and I can't scratch it!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Doug Schulkind:

Come visit the archive, hyde. I'll save something special just for you.

@patent leather liar
How very swank of you to drop by!
Avatar 6:10pm glenn:

no bridge, but pretty funny.

boy,soccer
The teacher asked little Johnny to use the word "definitely" in a sentence.

Little Johnny replies: "Teacher, do farts have lumps in them?"

The Teacher says: "Of course not Johnny."

To which Johnny replies: "Then I have definitely shit my pants."
Avatar 6:12pm earrie:

re: fellows and gals / gals and fellows
Speaking as a gallie I think it's fine to all be fellows in this particular context. If not in the loose affiliation membership/friendship connotation, than surely academic or medical. Dr. Shirley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Doug Schulkind:

All your jokes wind up in someone's pants, glenn.
Avatar 6:12pm Holly in NC:

Hi everyone! I'm deathly afeared of bridges, especially those that span water. All car windows DOWN, always. And yes, a bridge did collapse in my hometown when I was young.

Gary, I very well may miss your debut due to a childcare commitment, so I'm apologizing in advance. Break a stylus! ;-)
Avatar 6:12pm Japanese lip:

Thanks DJ Doug Schulkind. Last year those copy-cat Parisians over there in Paris submitted plans for a bouncy-bridge over the Seine. www.fastcodesign.com... Hah! "Gallopin' Gertie" beat 'em to it by 75 years.
Avatar 6:13pm earrie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Doug Schulkind:

If you thought we were done with the Silver Bridge, you are sadly mistaken.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Gary:

Hi Holly! The bridge I used to cross on the bus going from St. Paul to Minneapolis every morning collapsed ... but more than a decade after I'd moved to New York
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Doug Schulkind:

And let the record show (spin?) I coulda played two more Silver Bridge numbers.

Howdy Holly! And you too, you double-dippin Japanese Lip!!

And always a grand welcome to earrie!
Avatar 6:14pm ndbob:

@Gary wow - I used to go near that bridge but never had to cross it on my drive back and forth to North Dakota
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:14pm listener james from westwood:

holly, i still occasionally have dreams in which i, as a kid, am in the back seat of my parents' car, going over the driscoll bridge in new jersey, except in the dream the relatively mild hump of the actual driscoll bridge is something like a 70 degree slope.
i also don't particularly like the bear mt. bridge.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:16pm listener james from westwood:

hyde, the friday show makes for lovely next-day leftovers, like well-made chili or baked ziti. hope to see you elsewhere in the chats!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Doug Schulkind:

Here is a different bridge tragedy entirely.
Avatar 6:17pm glenn:

when the blackout hit 10 years ago, i was stuck on the swing bridge between manitoulin island and the mainland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Doug Schulkind:

@Listener James
Well-made chili, eh? Maybe I should give out Beano® as a marathon premium.
Avatar 6:18pm fleep:

The Hood Canal Floating Bridge on the way to Sequim is a good bridge to not like.
Avatar 6:19pm glenn:

don eddings should almost be on the right wing folk song compendium.
Avatar 6:20pm bridges of Madison:

I would rather cross a bridge than drive through the underwater tunnel in Maryland. I can't wait to get out of that thing.
Avatar 6:20pm fleep:

The best part of the Eddings song is it blew the earworm totally out of my head (it was Take On Me).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm Rich in Washington:

Take me to the bridge...!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm Doug Schulkind:

Hi there fleep! I like that category: Bridges to not like. The Bay Bridge in Maryland was always jamming my pulse as a kid.
Avatar 6:22pm Holly in NC:

@ljfw - ugh, bridge dreams, shudder. There is (was?) a HORRID bridge in Charleston SC that scares (scared?) even the natives... does anyone know what I'm talking about? My so-called friends lied to me to get me on said bridge, very evil.

Dang fleep, that's a horrible earworm, glad it's gone!
Avatar 6:23pm ndbob:

@Doug - I'm not a fan of that bridge either
Avatar 6:23pm molar bridgework:

"Are they still building that bridge" (Firesign Theatre ?}
Avatar 6:24pm Holly in NC:

Underwater tunnels also no bueno. I can deal with the one in Baltimore, but in NYC I am a quivering mass of neurosis.
Avatar 6:24pm ndbob:

The bridge crossing the Mississippi/mouth of the Ohio between Missouri and Cairo, Illinois was also not a fave
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:25pm listener james from westwood:

weirdly, tunnels don't bother me, possibly from commuting for several years into nyc via bus or train.
that loooong bridge down in florida would freak me out. it's my understanding that the local constabulary has to coax folks off of it now and again after they get the willies and halt their vehicles.
Avatar 6:27pm hyde:

a great book about a bridge: the Bridge of San Luis Rey by Thornton Wilder
Avatar 6:28pm ndbob:

I remember reading that in seventh grade I think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Doug Schulkind:

Holly, I just read somewhere about a tunnel in Norway that is 15 miles long. They keeping change the colored lighting on the ceiling along the way to keep drivers from freaking out.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:30pm listener james from westwood:

the gwb i have no prob with crossing (did so a million times while my grandparents still lived in the bronx, and you cannot beat that view on a clear day), but i'd always look at folks walking across, or worse, cycling across, and think, no freakin' way. what if my bike tipped the wrong way and i got flung into the hudson?
Avatar 6:32pm ndbob:

I've never crossed the gwb
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Rich in Washington:

Long, tall bridges freak me out. Recently had to drive a tall van across the Astoria bridge (between Astoria OR and WA) on a windy, squally day and had to pry my fingers off the steering wheel when I stopped.

Avatar 6:33pm Holly in NC:

Here we go (just had to google scary bridge Charleston)

www.notablephotos.com...

@Doug - 15 mile tunnel, I think I would lose it, change of lights or no. But really good idea!
Avatar 6:35pm hyde:

@Holly I'm not really scared of bridges, but that one looks sketchy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Doug Schulkind:

Greetings davex!

Hey, 1/2 a tooth, you wear your crown beautifully.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Doug Schulkind:

Glad you made it across, Rich.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Gary:

I can see that bridge being scary, too
Avatar 6:36pm bigger fork:

Holly, that's not a bridge, that's an amusement ride that escaped.

Thanks Doug, off to see the Dentist tomorrow. uggh
Avatar 6:37pm ndbob:

@Holly that looks intimidating
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm davex:

Thanks, Doug. Haven't caught live shows in a while, mostly the stream, which also does not disappoint.

Avatar 6:44pm Holly in NC:

@whooda - I *like* your bridge
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Rich in Washington:

Recently I read a post about Louis and his love for hamhocks and red beans. I really want some now. Where does one find hamhocks?
A bodega?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Gary:

Thanks, Rich! I just picked me up a new mixer, so hopefully it'll sound decent
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Doug Schulkind:

Gary scrounges up more amazing sounds than anyone I know.
Avatar 6:45pm glenn:

oooh. a new mixer. is it a kitchenaid?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Gary:

That's not true, Doug! But it's very kind of you to say ... :)
Avatar 6:45pm ndbob:

@Gary really looking forward to your show - tomorrow is my bday so I will be running around for a bit - but hope to hear some of it and the rest on the archive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Rich in Washington:

yay, scroungers! in my timezone, 7pm is 4pm, so I'll get to catch the first hour before leaving work and if I drive like an idiot, prepare dinner to the last hour and a half.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Gary:

Ha, ha ... nope, glenn, it's an Alesis. Got for $66 ... and happy birthday, ndbob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm davex:

That's Sinatra?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Doug Schulkind:

From the film "It Happened in Brookyln."

OK, now I am hella homesick.
Avatar 6:49pm hyde:

@ndbob happy birthday and all that rot
Avatar 6:49pm hurdy girder man:

Most famous non-existent bridges: Bridge to Nowhere, AK and Nantucket Bridge, Cap Cod.

Hey Holly!
Avatar 6:49pm Holly in NC:

@Rich - A bodega would likely be a good bet. Also asian markets usually have nose to tail pig parts. Here in NC one almost trips over ham hocks, they are everywhere. Whoops! Just stumbled! ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Doug Schulkind:

Yeah, happy birthday ndbob!!
Avatar 6:49pm Holly in NC:
