Avatar 12:08pm Cecile:

what are his thoughts on the passing of Lou Reed? Does he have a family-friendly story to share with us?
Avatar 12:08pm Cecile:

Are Manowar for real?
Avatar 12:09pm V Priceless:

Hi DK! Let's Rock! Q for HDM: how's about burying the hatchet with Andy Shernoff? (and I don't mean in his skull)! Maybe the fans will get a new Dictators record out of what could be a real "Calgon moment" for you's guys?
Avatar 12:09pm Diane Kamikaze:

Hey All! Yes HD Manitoba is back today! Post questions here if you wish! And Cecile, it was Gruppo's. I have heard good reports but not indulged meeself...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm coe:

@cecile there is nothing more real then Manowar :)
Avatar 12:09pm Cheri Pi:

What Coe said.
  12:10pm Dean:

Ask him about the spit trick.
Avatar 12:10pm Luna:

Avatar 12:10pm Cecile:

Or the other way around...

Thanks, Diane!
  12:10pm longtime listiner:

The band scrawl did a better version of the song "public image" by public image
Avatar 12:11pm Cecile:

Another Q: What would he go back and change in his career if he could?

Longtime listener: That's a killer cover. and it's more pointed because women are singing it. It hits home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm coe:

This is on my mind only because I just finished the book myself. Did he read Love Goes to Buildings on Fire and does he feel it was a pretty accurate description since he was actually there at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm coe:

Wow Scrawl that's a name I have not heard in a while. Didn't even know they did a cover of the song.
  12:13pm Dean:

Heard YMG open for Cabaret Voltaire in LA a long, long time ago.
Avatar 12:14pm Cecile:

coe, yeah, it's on the album Nature Film.
  12:14pm longtime listiner:

@cecile I love that cover by scrawl! Maybe Diane will play it as a request

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm coe:

Will we ever get a cover of I Got You Babe from HDM and Jayne County? JUST KIDDING!!!!
  12:18pm longtime listiner:

Avatar 12:18pm Cheri Pi:

I won't be here for Dick Manitoba :( I have to go get recertified for our work's safe zone program. In otherwords, so I wont end up a bigoted asshole.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm coe:

Saw Scrawl open for Mr. Bungle at Maxwells many many moons ago.
Avatar 12:18pm Cecile:

wow, is this those Trip Shakespeare guys? This is way better than anything they have ever done.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Guido (Cologne):

She is very cool, all grown up. Avengers have been playing around again, but I think she is devoted to her solo stuff. Latest CD is pretty darn good.
Avatar 12:23pm Cheri Pi:

Avatar 12:24pm Cecile:

Dean, Diane is good about asking about current career. That could be a great chance for her to plug her new stuff.
  12:24pm Dean:

Hmmm...get her on the show...? I might be able to facilitate...
Avatar 12:24pm Cecile:

Q: Handsome Dick, what's your favorite doo-wop song?
Avatar 12:25pm Diane Kamikaze:

I'm all ears, Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm coe:

She was very kind to me when the Avengers came through NJ a little while back.
Avatar 12:26pm Cheri Pi:

I will skip diversity training if she comes on the show.
Avatar 12:27pm Cecile:

Buy J-Zone's book and you'll be covered.
  12:27pm Dean:

I'll chat w/ wifey-poo about this. Can't see any harm in asking! They'll work together next this weekend or Monday. So, stay tuned, as they say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm coe:

HDM's melody line on Ave A is absolutely intoxicating to me for some reason.
Avatar 12:27pm Cecile:

Avatar 12:32pm Cecile:

Avatar 1:06pm PKNY:

I sure hope Cheri Pi walks into her corporate diversity training thing, and yells "VOOOOIIIIVVVOODDD" like a boss.
Avatar 1:08pm Cecile:

They should be like blues towns in the South and make rock clubs part of the chamber of commerce's planning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm coe:

And it's just a super cool bar period. Zoe and her girls run a tight ship.
Avatar 1:10pm Cecile:

that's why I am going to try to do the art thing eventually. I can do that until I drop.
Avatar 1:12pm Cecile:

yeah, why isn't rock 'n' roll in the US seen as a valuable part of a city's personality - except for a few cities, people still try to chase out clubs.
  1:13pm djelrock:

Manitoba will live forever!!! Please write a freakin' book!!! We need your legacy in writing! Rock on!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm coe:

I've always respected Manitoba because he's always been an uncomformist. He goes against everything and tells u in your face. So rare these days.
Avatar 1:19pm Cecile:

I like the Beatles and the Stones, It depends on which Springsteen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Guido (Cologne):

We The people
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Guido (Cologne):

I knew that from a bootleg, long befor the double-CD came out ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm efd:

We The People also did the amazing garage-rocker "You Burn Me Up And Down!"
  1:22pm mike:

i think Dick was my first bartender in the early 90s when i was visiting NYC
Avatar 1:22pm braveness23:

I don't really get the impression that WFMU listeners are intolerant of the big acts. But I DO think we are relieved that the huge acts have to share the set with the smaller guys and the nobodies. We're not here to listen to "the hits".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm coe:

I had got my picture with Joe Franklin a couple of years ago and my phone crapped out and I lost the picture one of the biggest heartbreaks in my life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Guido (Cologne):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm coe:

@braveness23 HERE HERE!!!
Avatar 1:26pm Cecile:

Handsome Dick brought it!
  1:27pm djelrock:

Question for Manitoba: Will the New York rock music scene of the esrly 70's to 80's ever be replicated? Ie: Ramones, Talking Heads, Television, The Dictators.
Avatar 1:28pm Cecile:

I heard it was so bad it was hilarious.
Avatar 1:29pm Cecile:

Avatar 1:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm Mike East:

  1:43pm djelrock:

Avatar 1:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar 1:46pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...okay - here we go again w/ synching w/ seeing '1964' on 'American Experience' last night...
Avatar 1:49pm Cecile:

Otis always is the right answer.
  1:50pm djelrock:

FYI: The equivalent to Handsome Dick Manitoba in Spain just passed away New Year's Eve at age 52. German Coppini was frontman to the seminal punk band of the 80's in that country: Siniestro Total. So Dick, you've got to take care of uself brother. Cause of death: Hepatitis.
  1:50pm Tom:

In my world the Big Bang was "Black Sabbath" by Black Sabbath (and the rest of the album, really). Whatever.....
Avatar 1:51pm Cecile:

I think for me it had to be Why Can't We Be Friends? by War
Avatar 1:51pm Cecile:

I love this song, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Mike East:

I'm not a lyrics guy...I went most of my life without realized why she's like a hurricane...(there's calm in your eyes). that opened up a whole new appreciation for this song, which I hadn't really liked growing up.
Avatar 2:01pm Cecile:

Scotty Moore
Avatar 2:01pm Cecile:

Avatar 2:02pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yeah well - who plays like Neil does on that...Scotty was Elvis's original player, pretty much...
Avatar 2:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...still stuff I thot was Ronnie Spector (who's great) - but it's actually Darlene Love...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm dale:

benny from topcat was on phil silvers show. wasn't paying attention if he said that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm dale:

great, now i'm watching top cat on youtube - in spanish.
Avatar 2:10pm V Priceless:

HDM: isn't it time for a Drew Friedman portrait sitting??
  2:11pm djelrock:

Peter Hook's book about Joy Division and Morrissey's autobiography have done incredibly well. Morrissey said he earned more out of his autobiography than in all his music combined!!!
Avatar 2:15pm Cecile:

djelrock, a lot of people who aren't into music will read music autobios if they are interesting.

HDM, that's how people walk in MN, too. Makes me nuts, and I'm a pedestrian.
Avatar 2:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I'm a pedestrian - but I agree - it's everyone's responsibility...
Avatar 2:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- & DK's right - he could paint a picture of entire scenes w/ some authority, & character I'm certain ! - which people care about.
Avatar 2:19pm Cecile:

huge cult audience
Avatar 2:19pm Cecile:

And New Order had hits.
Avatar 2:19pm InBrkly:

The internet killed "the underground"
Avatar 2:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Morrissey's iconic, true (whatever we think of him) - & writing takes a lot of time.
Avatar 2:20pm braveness23:

You have to take into consideration that Morrissey has been sued by everyone under the sun and has lost soooo much of his money. His comment about the money made by the book may be snark implying that all of his other money has been sued away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm dale:

when he's 90 most of us (i ASSUME) will be in our 80s, so his audience will be dead if he waits too long.
Avatar 2:24pm InBrkly:

Maybe I over state it. This is what I'm thinking: when I was a teen I had to make a 5 hour drive to find a record store that even sold a Joy Division album. Part of the experience of any scene was the EFFORT it took to sustain what you loved.

Now, just search itunes and click.
Avatar 2:24pm Cecile:

Avatar 2:26pm Cecile:

  2:27pm djelrock:

I've just seen ppl in rock who die too esrly and dont get a chance to hav their say and Dick is IT on NYC punk scene outside of Ramones. If he pitched it, he'll find a publisher who will advance him a load of cash because his book would sell well in the US n amazing everywhere else. My humble opinion.
Avatar 2:27pm InBrkly:

I confess that means a certain sense of exclusiveness which is both snobby and probably contrary to the best interest of any band.
Avatar 2:28pm Cecile:

he could also do a Food TV show on NY food and nightlife.
Avatar 2:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I never understood loving Music but not caring about where it came from
- but I think that's what it is: some just like Music - & some really want to know about it...I have seen that some young HipHoppers really know their Jazz (for instance)...

A long time ago, John Talley-Jones from the Urinals/100 Flowers outlined a curriculum of teaching rock. it was in the fanzine 1-2-3-4.
Avatar 2:32pm braveness23:

Gah, I'm loving this interview but I've gotta go on site to a client... I wonder if I can take a half hour to pack up my stuff.
Avatar 2:33pm Cecile:

let's not forget bands that were influenced by jazz and modern classical
Avatar 2:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...on one hand - you define yourself by Popular Culture - which is Trends & Fashions & Exclusive - on the other, there's the desire to Learn More & Experience More - they aren't always congruous...You tell people - you may not like this, but the people you like liked it! - & they still may not care...You can't do anything @ that point - & there's no accounting for taste anyhow...More to the point of some of what he's said: I used to not relate to Sinatra - he was dismissive of Rock @ times - & he was 'before my time' as a *social phenomenon* - but I learned about him later...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm common:

i had to go to a stupid meeting and miss all this rock. i missed you all.
Avatar 2:39pm Cecile:

Chuck Berry.
Avatar 2:41pm Cecile:

I never heard much Motown until I got to Ann Arbor. Stations where I was at were strictly easy-listening with some hard rock thrown in.
Avatar 2:41pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Lennon said 'You need another name for R'n'R you could call it Chuck Berry' - & made the point that Chuck Berry was a fantastic poet who obviously & undeniably influenced him & Dylan & everyone. There are specific lines in Dylan that are Berry-influenced (or Robert Johnson or Guthrie influenced)...
- Some of these Isolated Tracks now make you aware how great the Players & Singers were...
Avatar 2:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- compare 'Monkey Business' there to 'Subterranean Homesick Blues', for instance...
