It makes me panic actually.

Hello DJ Dave Bombay and tapping listeners. Guido, are you a printer? if so are you a pressman or pr-press?
Avatar 6:07am
Dave Bombay:

My show is based around anti-autogenics with a dash of Hari Krishna theory & Scientology themed crackers.

Dave Bombay:

Good morning gang! Nice to have you with us this morning!

Guido (Cologne):

@WD4+Gaffa
i have a certain past as a volunteer as typesetter (old fashioned type of).
and I had my days with fanzines.
Why you're asking?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10am
Guido (Cologne):

Nice cooking recipe, Dave!

I read your comment earlier about noisy printing equiptment in the area where you were. if you did hot-lead typesetting, you are older than I thought.

Very nice jazzy set mr Bombay
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14am

I even look younger than I am. *grin*
I'm working at a very small publishing house.
I'm not the printer, I am the online-man.

I was in commercial offset and digital printing (and art printing). Just curious.

Herbie Hancock has a great jazz piece called "maiden voyage"

Italian printing is / was a high quality product in centuries past, as you know, I'm sure.
Avatar 6:17am
Dave Bombay:

You are correct Longtime Listener! Herbie Hancock is amazing! We just got a giant 34 disk box set of his in the station.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18am
Guido (Cologne):

A distant frind of mine recently told, she has a Blue-Note-lounge now!

Got an entire blue-note-vinyl collection from an unlucky guy who replaced everything with CDs years ago. She now "installed" that as part of her new extra living room.

Head Hunters is one of my all time fav albums. Yea HH. That's some box set DJ Dave Bombay, are you going to be sharing any with us?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20am
Guido (Cologne):

I once was heading for studying graphic design. So I'm familiar with all that stuff and all the pre-DTP-technologies as well.
Avatar 6:21am
Dave Bombay:

@Guido - That is amazing! What a lucky lady! I recently acquired a large number of Blue Note recordings myself.

@Cheif - I played some selections last week and will be featuring more next week. Today's jazz set is Blue Note-centric.

...oh well - as long as you're sure these guys you're playing know how to play a little bit - we'll be okay w/ this 'Jass' stuff - just for now you understand...

Good morning, Dave. All that jazz sounds great to me.
Avatar 6:36am
Hancho:

@Rev Rabbit Jazz is the stopping point for me in music tolerance, the next step down for me is Opera and I refuse to go there.
Avatar 6:39am
Dave Bombay:

@Rev Rabbit - Jass will be done shortly... dont worry. I have a nice stack of 45s coming up next.

@Sem - Good morning! I am glad you can dig it.

@Hancho - Fear not! Opera has not and will not be played on this show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40am
Sem Chumbo:

@Hancho: thought the same about Opera until friends staged an intervention and I was sent to a long term music appreciation facility. Glad they did.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yerknow Hancho - I can see myself saying that - & then thinking Pavarotti was a real nice guy who communicated warmth - & seeing 'Porgy & Bess' wouldn't be so bad...& so on
@DB: That was meant totally ironically - love Jazz - but I fear not, your Mix is good...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41am

@WD4+Gaff
Thanks for compliments! I dig it!
I was more of a "German" stone mason.

... concerning evolution of tastes:

When in the mid-80ies even my beloved "inidie" music started to get on my nerves, I was getting deeply into: 60ies Garage and Jazz (Hard-Bop, Free, Fusion) and modernist Classical and DIY-Tape-Underground.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Thank You brother - I'm sittin' here in smalltown NewHampshuh - & online streams are my favorite thing in the world! Listening to FMU on the (plain old) car radio is not an option...There's a difference between stations w/ Live DJs & just Servers (or whatever it is) loaded w/ tunes - but even those are loaded by somebody & some are pretty kewl ! ...I'm greedy & I love options...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- FMU has about twice as many Plays in my iTunes as the next station (WWOZ as it happens) - & you know for sure most of those Plays were for much longer...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- also: Local Regional stuff like on regular Radio doesn't bother me @ all - in fact, it's great hearing about NJ/NYC - as it is hearing about the temperature & clubs in N'Orleans on WWOZ, or the traffic in LA on KCRW - I like it !...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57am
fred:

I've been listening to WFMU since 2001 or 2002, and for a while my only other source of music has been live shows (more than 100 a year, so my definition of "expensive" might be low)
Avatar 8:00am
Dave Bombay:

@Rev Rabbit - I am with you on the local aspect for sure. I have always enjoyed the regional aspect of radio.

@Fred - I have found so much great music through FMU as a listener over the years! The freedom is amazing and my music library has grown exponentially since joining the crew here a couple years ago.

I guess so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07am
fred:

Dave, my record collection is limited by my budget, I go to live shows instead. These days, most of my new records are DJ premiums. They keep me busy for a long time, I only finished listening to all of last year's batch last month
Avatar 8:12am
bibi:

@fred quite expensive cause happening at la cigale.... apparently no 'première partie'.
polaris prize effect ? i guess the venue and fare were decided long before.
i'd suggest save 25e for another gig.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14am
Guido (Cologne):

As a teenager I used to save my money for records instead of going to live shows, in order that I would have "longer joy with the lasting things".

How wrong I was!
I better do not tell what I missed!
Avatar 8:15am
Dave Bombay:

@Guido - Everyone has their own path to WFMU DJ-dom. Having a wide music base is a common thread though.

@Fred - I do the same thing! I am very lucky to work with Brian Turner and I get to handle much of the new music that goes into rotation here. Because of that, much of it ends up on my computer. If I didnt have that going for me, my music library would be much much smaller.
Avatar 8:17am
Cheri Pi:

punching the WFMU time card, hello listeners and Dave
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17am
fred:

@bibi: la cigale is often more expensive than that, I haven't been there in years. They will probably play a long show, but I'll probably save that money and see three other shows instead

Salutations Cheri!

Guido (Cologne):

Please teach me:

What is "Old-School-Hip-Hop" nowadays?
In my memory "New School" startet with Whoodini, the Def-Jam Records' artists ...
OK, time passes ...
... it's not a static genre name (anymore)?
It used to be back in the 90ies, leastways as far as "European knowledge" is concerned.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40am
fred:

@ausmanx: are you coming over here this year? The Sonic Protest lineup should be announced any day now
Avatar 8:42am
Dave Bombay:

@guido- I use Old School to mean anything before 1990. To be fair my definition is rather loose.
Avatar 8:44am
w41:

The last hour of yr show is priceless
Avatar 8:44am
PKNY:

I gotta say, Whodini doing rap-rock doesn't really work well.
Avatar 8:44am
Dave Bombay:

but i am also going to play a track from The Coup from 1993... like I said, i use it pretty loosely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44am
Guido (Cologne):

I see, thanks dave!
Avatar 8:46am
Dave Bombay:

@PKNY - I agree.
Avatar 8:48am
PKNY:

If you put the old-school hip-hop channel on Sirius/XM on, you'll hear everything from "Spoonin Rap" from '79 to mid-90s Goodie Mod tracks. So at this point in history, calling something "old school" doesn't really help to narrow things down.

I would say the original use of "old school" as far as hip-hop was to refer to groups who were around before Run-DMC dropped (Cold Crush, Treacherous 3, Funky 4+1, Furious 5, etc).
Avatar 8:51am
Dave Bombay:

That is true. I personally widen that definition for ease on the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52am
Guido (Cologne):

OK, let's try other definitions ...
1. pre-Sugar-Hill / Enjoy Period
2. pre 808-Period
3. pre sampling piracy period
4. ???
... just playing around ...
Avatar 8:54am
PKNY:

A newer definition could be "anything that came out before Biggie and Tupac died". For a lot of kids, that seems to be a dividing line, where they all know those two, but don't know any of the MCs that inspired them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56am
Guido (Cologne):

... interesting!
Nice that we talked about ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57am
