Hola, Jesse!

hey everyone! wrestling my cat for control of the mic...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm
Gary:

The guitar stuff really does seem to work on a snowy night
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm
listener james from westwood:

indeed it does.

Jesse K:

I've been going back and forth about starting with a guitar raga. Still on the fence but I think I'm gonna do it. Whoops, just did it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm
listener james from westwood:

LOL, funny how that worked out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm
Gary:

This is more than pretty great
Avatar 7:27pm
Jesse K:

I can't find much about the record online except that it's a fairly early record by Bhattacharya, listed on his site: www.debashishbhattacharya.com...
but the buy link is 404. It's also listed on the label's site but with different tracks so who knows.

listener james from westwood:

iirc, a few years back the friday djs all did a raga day: scott mcd, doug, bryce (no stranger to the gloriously long cut!), and kurt all played time-of-day-appropriate ragas. it was tremendous.
Avatar 7:33pm
Jesse K:

oh yeah I do remember that, I love themed day blocks like that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
Gary:

Jesus God, but wow. I'm on the next train to Iselin to find me a copy of that.
Avatar 7:36pm
Jesse K:

Got one more short one here before the show disappears to dream time, this guitar player lives in Staten Island last I knew

hey there it is!
I also found this while googling: mio.to...

Awesome!

Gary, you turned me on to this source: afrosynth.blogspot.com...
Avatar 8:02pm
northguineahills:

Probably not the Quintron in Quintron & Miss Pussycat....
Avatar 8:05pm
Jesse K:

I think he added the r when he joined up with them. Probably different still from Trek with Quintronic, I'm guessing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm
Gary:

I downloaded everything off that site!
Avatar 8:15pm
Jesse K:

I got everything I could but missed a few things, the only links I could find were on the soundcloud, which had no links for things like Margino's version of Holiday, for example
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm
Gary:

It's a confusing site. I downloaded all of the Afrosynth collections somehow -- not via soundcloud -- and now that I'm back there poking around, I can't figure out how I did it. But I did go systematically through the site pulling each numbered Afrosynth collection down. (The "real" albums don't seem to have links to anything DLable)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm
Gary:

Oh, duh, wait ... here's what I did: afrosynth.blogspot.com...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm

What was that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
Uncle Michael:

Whodat?
Avatar 8:38pm
Jesse K:

Soviet Record I picked up this weekend but I haven't yet figured out the singers name, I know it was backed by the group "Orera"
Avatar 8:39pm
Jesse K:

Uncle Michael!!! Got your ears right yet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm
Gary:

It was great. At first I thought it was Turkish. Then I thought Japanese. I wouldn't have guessed Russian.
Avatar 8:40pm
Jesse K:

Orera was Georgian so I'm assuming the singer was too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm
Uncle Michael:

Yes, I'm all better.
Avatar 8:41pm
Jesse K:

found it!! She's Nani Bregvadze
en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm
Gary:

"Her signature songs include Snegopad ('Snowfall') ..."
Avatar 8:45pm
Jesse K:

yeah well that would have been timely...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm
Gary:

It's still coming down here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm
Uncle Michael:

Gary, do you find much classic cumbia sonidera in your wanderings...'80s and '90s vintage?
Avatar 8:50pm
Jesse K:

my cyrillic is pretty poor, I'm sounding out the songs on this record and it doesn't look like it's on there...
Avatar 8:51pm
Jesse K:

whoopsie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm
Gary:

U.M., there's one place where I *might* be able to find some ... do you know any groups I should keep my eye out for? There's this place off Broadway in Astoria not too far from where I live where they have a lot of cumbia ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm
Gary:

снегопад?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm
Gary:

and they do have a lot of older stuff, but whether or not they have older cumbia specifically, I'm not sure
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm
Uncle Michael:

No...no groups really...except on some comps thay I played some stuff from on my September 20 show. It was the firsts stuff I ever found that sounded like this stuff I heard in a Mexican restaurant in Emporia, Kansas back around 1993.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm
Uncle Michael:

it's really stoney, whacked out stuff with altered voices, sound effects...almost like Latin dub reggae.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm
Uncle Michael:

Like if this song Jesse is playing was cumbia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm
Gary:

Okay, I've found where you're playing those tracks, about an hour and a half in? I'll give it a listen. And I'll go ask the women at the place ... they're incredibly helpful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm
Uncle Michael:

I'd be in your debt! Thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm
listener james from westwood:

thanks a ton, jesse—a fine programme!
Avatar 8:58pm
northguineahills:

Thanks Jesse! Great snowy sounds!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm
Gary:

But of course! ... great show, Jesse! Really loved the two guitar wonders
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm
Uncle Michael:

Thanks for the show, Jesse.
Avatar 8:59pm
