You are EN FUEGO, Michael...

What Liz Phair album is that? A friend was recently telling me I need to checkout a life changing album of hers... Somehow passed me up.

Recently watched Nashville on your recommendation. Dug it.

What the hell is Mike talking about exactly?

Mike, the album is called “Exile in Guyville.”

I also don’t believe I had to explain which Liz Phair album was the good one. The rest of her work is passable.

@Mike are you referring to Nashville the movie or TV series? I'm at my library website and have this choice to make.

@Michael from the TV show summary it sounds like the plot from Black Swan with (presumably) Nashville music backgrounds. Aging country star threatened by rising star...

P-90:

@LeatherWh: "Black Swan"?!?! That plot is as old as fiction itself! Familiar with "All About Eve", or "A Star is Born", two prominent variations from the last century or so?
Actually they're talking about Robert Altman's movie from 1975 which more of a big-ensemble, multiple-story-line satire of US politics and society of that time. Q.: what temp in J-town now? Up to 28F in NYC
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm
Parq:

Okay, here we are talking about the Black Swan, and Michael's playing a tune by someone called Odette. Let's here it for pleasant coincidences.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm
Parq:

Or, Michael, am I not giving you enough credit for being quick?
Avatar 12:06pm
Boris Car Loft:

Yes, i discovered a more complete description on the library website and could then see it was a Robert Altman movie which would have cued me into its value. I really liked Black Swan because I came from that environment (visual art not dancing) and for other reasons. If you haven't seen it I highly recommend it.

@Parq I will have to study the connection to Odette, am guessing she has album or single by the same name. Coincidence is king.
  12:07pm
P-90:

@Parq: Synchronicity or Swingin' DJ? Good question, didn't notice the reference, GREAT version of that song either way
  12:10pm

@Whoo: Odette is the protagonist off the ballet Swan Lake, central to the movie

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm

Speaking of movies, this song originates in "You're a Big Boy Now", which is a pretty good 60s movie, actually. Mama Cass's phrasing is phenomenal here, by the way.
Avatar 12:40pm
fire hose whoplash:

I think all artist "explore" themes in their work, not so much as 'repeating' but applying in modified experiments. Some riffs, images, dancesteps, etc. are just too rich to abandon without a proper 'beating to death'.

Of course there are times and artists when a successful turn is used for commercial return. Therefore, dead to art.

P-90:

@Parq: "You're a Big Boy Now"! I haven't even thought about that movie in years! Coppola's first non-Corman film, I believe. Quirky and COMPLETELY of its time.

What's impressed me in recent years is the amount of stuff on TV especially that is CRAMMED with implicit allusions to other works, and it's just a matter of whether you know those and can pick out the pattern, and you'll bust out laughing where nobody else does.
