@Caryn: Somehow I was cajoled to the Souda Bay port of Crete. Then a harrowing over mountain, rickety bus ride -- stopping for goats and boulders -- to the other side and Chora Sfakion as our final destination. Not complaining, though, it was wonderful. All the free ouzo the citizens could get into us.

@kat: we rented a jeep and drove from the north to the south coast to see the Matala magic rocks. Made a couple of wrong turns at one point and ended up being stopped by army guys with machine guns! That was interesting. But most of the drive was lovely, stopping by orchards and tiny cafes.

@kat: no, we didn't follow the coast, we went pretty much over the middle of the island to get from one coast to the other. Yep, there were some bumpy, dusty and rocky parts, but the good bits seemed to overshadow those.

I know we experienced an incredible starscape from our "hotel" balcony ($1.60 /night is hardly a hotel) and an even more spectacular electrical storm. Really could understand how Greek mythology came about. Such magnificent power from nature.
