Favoriting January 30, 2014: Billy Joel Special - Talking w/Fans ... Playing the Hits

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Artist Track Album Label Year Format Comments Approx. start time
The Monday before this show aired, I didn't have any concept of wanted I wanted to do with it. That morning, I was listening to talk radio in NYC and they were talking about Billy Joel's return to Madison Square Garden. That very night would see Billy Joel's first in a series of once-a-month concerts he will stage there in the upcoming year. Honestly, (parden the pun) I've never been a huge Billy Joel fan. For one reason or another his music just hasn't been my thing. But for plenty of people, he is "the" thing. It occurred to me that it might be fun to tap into the pre-concert energy of the show with fans waiting to go through the gates. I really didn't know what to expect. It was interesting to see how it unfolded. People came from the city, but they were also coming into Penn Station on the train from Long Island. It was touching to talk to the Islanders. Their reverence and loyalty to Billy Joel were plain to see. There were people from Jersey and NYC and Connectticut. Probably from everywhere, really, for all these years later, despite the comings and goings of musical fads and trends, the man still stands and he packs them in. Old Billy. The boxer. In the ring to take another swing. I knew that by the end of the experience, it would help me to better understand something and someone I've sometimes purposely walled-out. What the heck. I welcome him in now, and I hope you'll follow suit.

An Interview with Steve outside Madison Square Garden
I won't notate each time a new song enters in the background. Most of the background music (not all) involved me digitally looping sections of some Billy Joel (I'm going to refer to him as BJ from here on out to save time) songs and looping them. This show I would have to say was "DigiLog. A lot of cassette, microcassette, and laptop mixed together. Kind of time consuming, but it's fun to do.

@Yeti: "Blue Jay Way" is pretty good musically, lyrically the verses seem kinda contrived. It IS something George made up as he was waiting for friends to come. Haven't heard Colin Newman's version, though I like the "please don't be long" chorus.

@david: I've been searching for a particular Yamaha keyboard demo with online videos lately, and I've discovered more than a few pop songs used as demos. "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" is a Casio toy one, and one common one was apparently a smooth jazz number called "Night Birds", originally by Shakatak. Is there a West Coast equivalent to regional favorites like Billy Joel, Bon Jovi, Springsteen, etc.? It doesn't seem like there are or could be.
Avatar 6:31pm

I've thought that "the song 'Vienna' " would be a good Ken/Andy litmus test--Ken would probably name the song by Ultravox ('81), while Andy would definitely name Billy Joel's song from The Stranger ('77).
