I think that Richie Havens used to tune his guitar funny (I'm a non-musician) because he was used to singing in doo-wop groups and he wanted to copy that.

Lydia Loveless cover is awesome.

open tunings just have more melodic possibilities within the limits of four fingers, if that makes sense.
Avatar 12:05pm
Michael Shelley:

barry Gibb is perhaps the best example of a person who made the most of open tunings - Jules Shear tunes
weird & Curtis mayfield tuned to the black keys of the piano
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm
Stevel:

Didn't Joni Mitchell use open tunings a lot? My wife struggled for years to figure out some of her songs. Open tuning made it a bunch easier.

joni mitchell had some strange ones. and then there's the bruce palmer modal tuning E E E E B E.

I thought it was weird that the cheap trick show was so early tonight, 6:30. But I just looked and all the upcoming wellmont theater shows are at 6:30 or 7. Since when do shows start so early?
Avatar 12:14pm
Michael Shelley:

It's a trick - doors are at 6:30, tehy want you to come drink there - but some shows are starting at 7:30 - I called the Wellmont this week and asked if there was an opening band - and they said they did not know yet!
Avatar 12:16pm

or it could be that their audience is all over 55 and wants to be in bed by 10:00. (he says somewhat seriously)

Frank Above:

Is it a "cheap trick" Michael? hahaha....oof.
Avatar 12:18pm
Michael Shelley:

Glenn - I used to agree - but now I believe there are writers with a sensitivity to subtle chord variations that can build melodies to play off these sophisticated chords in a way that is very special

i think that's maybe got more to do with the fact that as you become more technically proficient at your craft that you just naturally want to do more complex things. it's the same with any skill, really. i'm a highly skilled carpenter. i don't want to go back to back-filling additions. i want to build stuff that challenges me.

my wife's old-time group has a guitar player that shows up occasionally and plays in some kind of tuning (DADGAD?) that drives them crazy, especially the bass player, because the chords are slightly off--they sound good by themselves but make accompaniasts wince.
