...Cowboys make me think - maybe this *isn't* such a weak spot in the Beatles' oeuvre...Anyhow - tag the 'Day Tripper'/'We Can Work it Out' single onto the end of 'Rubber Soul' & it's all better...

That's what I thought, Kurt. Which is why this threw me, since if you hated it, you wouldn't play it (that kind of behaviour is reserved for Ken)? I thought I must have remembered wrong. So, good to know.
Avatar 3:25pm

well, yeah, except run for your life isn't even close to being one of the beatles worst songs.

So, murder love songs. You could just have an hour-long Nick Cave set. I suspect the show will be more varied though.

"guts" is pretty graphic

The lack of stories kind of mirrors real life -people committing crimes of passion often want to forget the crime. Psychopaths relive it.

country death song. (obvious)

...Kurt,have you read "Steppenwolf"? You might appreciate it!
Avatar 3:29pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...compare to Dylan, or Stones' 'Play w/ Fire' - or even John's own 'You Can't Do That' earlier - 'Run' is pretty weak; 'Rubber Soul' was done very quickly, actually - esp. for a stone cold Classic.
Avatar 3:32pm
Caryn:

Let's face it, both Lennon McCartney have written masterpieces. And some absolute pieces of crap. As did George and Ringo, come to think of it. And I feel safe in saying that even the worst Beatles songs were superior to the worst Lennon and McCartney solo stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm

@RRN63: well, often crimes of passion seem to lack a proper motive anyway. You're obsessed with someone, then overcome with some vague, undefined paranoia about unfaithfulness or "being done wrong by", and boom - you've killed someone.

I think the worst Lennon & worst Harrison solo works are not even close to as bad as the worst Beatles' songs.

ITA, glenn. voice of satin.
A lot of perpetrators of crimes of passion say if they had waited until the moment passed, they would have just called their lawyers and filed for divorce. But it seems like when you get to that point, decisive and fatal action is the only solution for those folks.

Avatar 3:43pm

@coelacanth: I disagree about Lennon, but I do think Harrison probably had the most consistent solo material in the sense that his worst solo stuff was never anywhere as bad as the other three's, or the Beatles' worst stuff. Good on you, George!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm

...the LSD web is only radials - Zen-like
...the Caffeine web is the totally crazytown one...caffeine is reportedly used as a poison against frogs. Toxicants, of course, often evolve as natural defenses.
- Saw those foxes on a PBS Nova or such about Dogs; as aggression was bred out of them, their coloration varied greatly too - & they concluded that this helps explain how we get great varieties of Dog out of on Grey Wolf: Pigment hormones are related to adrenaline & aggression...oh Eric's caught up...

P-90:

We just had a long discussion about Belayev's Silver Fox experiment in a seminar at Columbia yesterday, funny coincidence. He strongly feels that his results support the theory that by selectively breeding the parent wolf species for obedience and sociality, we created the domesiticated dog by selecting for a suite of genotypes that cause the animal to eetain the qualities of a puppy into adulthood. The more "neotynous" the animal becomes with each new generation, fewer individuals develop the adult characteristcs of independence, aggression, etc; they retain the emotional state of a puppy sharing a den with its mother and siblings.
The significance of the other physical traits, like color variations, corkscrew-shaped tails etc. that are recessive and occor very rarely in the wild populations, which ghen appear very frequently in the "domesticated" experimental groups is that they demonstrate "linkage", i.e. the genes that code for those features are linked to the genes for the traits the experiment was breeding for, so they "inadvertantly" came to predominate along with the "obedience and sociality" genes. This is important because to understand natural selection, we have to understand that genes under selective pressure will carry other genes with them, even though those other genes are not themselves of particular benefit
