@ fleep: there are some things they should just leave alone, so I get scared when I hear about these projects, but that Wilshire Grand was no Beverly Wilshire or Hollywood Roosevelt. Or even the Bonaventure.

P-90 and considering the new tower will have the worlds highest above ground swimming pool the crushing of everything meaningful seems like a small price to pay.
Avatar 1:15am

@Whooda The previous hotel was a drab 50s thing, no loss, as Tigers just typed. There's a big Chinese project but that's a parking lot right now, so far no worthy architecture is going down, in fact, some are retrofitting (and gentrifying).

@fleep There is no doubt that demolition was a no-brainer in this case especially with the quake risks. Plus America, particularly LA, is about progress and appearances.

When I lived in Sacramento Safeway built a store over the Alhambra movie theater, a local landmark, and many locals refused to shop there.

(Disclaimer: "Tigers" and I is just good friends)

@whoo: like the cetacean says, that particular building and corner downtown did not have a lot of irreplaceable character, that 's why I was relieved. In the future, though, they are gonna wonder why some really unigue things couldn't just be set aside, you know what I mean
Avatar 1:25am

The worrisome project is in Hollywood, it will surround and dwarf the Capitol Records building, far too tall and outsize for that neighborhood - and smack on top of an earthquake fault (the developers kind of sort of didn't check).

You have a good ear Matt (I didn't say "pretty ear" so don't get any big idears.
  1:33am
P-90:

@whoo & fleep: I've been saying this for years, when the long overdue Big One quake hits Southern California, it's water that's going to be the
most critical issue, there'll be all kinds of problems there, but all thr fresh water comes into the LA basin from a single aqueduct, and when that breaks, you'll have this enormous population in crisis, and no way to bring adequate fresh water in to support it

@ fleep : what, they're building some behemoth at Hollywood and Vine that will "dwarf and surround the Capitol Records building"? That should be sacred-cow turf, that's just the kind of thing that should be forbidden, I dont even want to Google it, I'll get too pissed off

Jake The tri-city area in NC (Chapel Hill area I think) is already a high-technology corridor too it's in the Piedmont, the geographical area between the mountains and sand dunes of the Atlantic coast. Ashville is in multicultural in the Blue Ridge Mountains, GORGEOUS, but quickly becoming over populated an gentrified, too much for my tastes.
