Greetings! Hope you can pledge tonight to support WFMU! If you pledge to my show as usual I've made a custom conceptual world music cd for everyone who pledges $75 or more - this year's theme is "Cross Cultural Confusion". A cd chock-full of music that blurs genre boundaries: Okinawan island song meets African highlife style; Polish highland fiddles collide with reggae toasters, Middle Eastern music blended with Balkan Brass, Finnish / Indian bhangra; and lots more. Even French icon Serge Gainsbourg gets into the act with an Antillean-style selection. But if all that doesn't float your boat you can choose a different DJ's premium cd instead!

PLUS - tonight one lucky person who pledges $75 or more during my show will win a very special GRAND PRIZE - a big Indian shopping bag (direct from the Jodhpur market) full of goodies - folk music cds from India, two classic field-recording LPs of Indian Music, two new Indian themed books (one fiction, one non-fiction) plus an Indian snack to enjoy while you're listening or reading.

It's Katie's Birthday! My long suffering better half is sitting here in our dank studio to provide moral support! Pledge now - that will help!

This is definitely cross-culturally confusing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Mike Noble:

love the chang loo! she does a great version of "calypso blues" too.
  6:28pm Becky from Ventura:

Hi Rob and Tamar!!! Tamar, I pledged earlier.. sad I couldn't force you to pronounce Hueneme anymore! Rob, this show is pure joy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Mike Noble:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm davex:

Hey, don't worry about the silence - some of us pledged beforehand online!
  6:53pm LovecraftDude888:

where did Droll go? I notice he buggered off days ago..hrmm hope he's not becoming a mercenary in Kiev...
  6:55pm LovecraftDude888:

I have one serious question guys: are there any grants available for non-commercial radio in USA, or is it very limited? (to nonexistent?) I'm really wondering
  6:59pm LovecraftDude888:

PrometheusRadio.org sez community radio growing faster than corporate for sure...but I'm assuming that self-fund raising is the best way to do things. Grants are hard to get these days.
  7:02pm LovecraftDude888:

ewww thought it was Thomas Dolby for a sec. there..earghhh

Hi Sigurdur! How are things in Iceland?
Avatar 7:20pm Gary M Ind.:

I'm happy to be logged in, but I dont have a heart next to my name (sorry)
  7:21pm some other guy:

lovecraftdude, you've already answered your own question: the nice folks about prometheus know almost everything there is to know about LPFM and other non commercial radio, and they will be happy to provide you with information if you ask.

(Grants are potentially available for everything, so there's no quick WFMU chat answer to your question)
Avatar 7:24pm Sigurdur:

Hi dave, well things are rather touristly , at least in the capital...... ps freedom 4 Scotland 2014
🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:24pm Tamar:

We heart you all, symbol or no! Becky and Will and Davex, thanks for pledging earlier-- it all goes to the same place anyway. Bex, I know how to say it now, I do! But you moved anyway!
  7:25pm barba yiorgi:

Holy moly! what a great version of Asa Branca! Was listening to Luis Gonzaga a little while ago Synchronicity!
Avatar 7:27pm Mdurek:

Like this jam! Reminds me of American Irish picnics as a kid a little
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm davex:

@Sigurdur: That's the price you pay for having such a beautiful country, I guess. I was there a long time ago and would to come back someday...
Avatar 7:29pm MDurek:

Brazil Wow
Avatar 7:30pm GaryfromIndiana.:

I'm encouraiging people in sms message, facebook and twitter to donate to WFMU. I ask them to relieve my web listening shame for being here without donating. please help if you can.
Avatar 7:30pm Sigurdur:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm Caryn:

Tamar, your second pronunciation of Kouvola was perfect!
Avatar 7:37pm Mdurek:

LOL. You had to choose a one with amazing bass playing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm Caryn:

Honestly, you could just ignore the mentions of Toyota and groove to this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm Mike Noble:

oh man, wish i hadn't won the afrobeat. this ilayaraja is my shit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm davex:

@Tamar: Thank you!
Avatar 7:46pm GaryfromIndiana:

I absolutely love Filipino music, even dahil sayo.. if you play any at all I love you,
Avatar 7:50pm Mdurek:

@Caryn: Right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm Caryn:

Dammit, I step out of the room for a bit and miss the bhangra!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm tomasz.:

oh damn, there was Ilaiyaraaja and i missed it? gahhhh
Avatar 7:59pm GaryfromIndiana:

Indonesia and Malaysia sound so similar to Filipino, I enjoy them too. . I know teachers there, and some students who lived in USA for a time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Caryn:

BTW, the bhangra's name means "angler's bhangra", in case anyone's interested.
  8:00pm LovecraftDude888:

someotherguy...thanks, yes I read up on it. there is money but no way is it gonna fund a whole station, etc. hrmm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm tomasz.:

Gary from Indiana - are you in Gary, Indiana? that would be too perfect
Avatar 8:02pm GaryfromIndiana:

I wish. I often joked that they named a city after me. I';m oretty far from the Chicago area.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:11pm Ken From Hyde Park:

If you get enough pledges, can you bring back quadraphonic?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm Ike:

Sorry I couldn't be there as a phone slave as originally scheduled! I hope the listeners are ponying up some nice wads of cash to help WFMU survive another year. Pledge pledge pledge!
  8:25pm LovecraftDude888:

Mdurek you look like the aviator that became the second coming of Phil Manzanera!
8:26pm Skirkie in the phone room:

That's ok Ike. Duffy was on the list to be here and he didn't even show up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Ike:

Well, "Joe Ducky" has a good excuse -- he prob. has to rest up after getting paddled by Pseu's burlesque-ish dancer yesterday. That duck mask was kind of creepy.
8:35pm Skirkie in the phone room:

I was wondering what that mask was for.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm tomasz.:

ah, wish i'd known you were short on the phone - coulda come down. the PATH closures are really killing my vibe rn
  8:50pm LovecraftDude888:

tomasz...can't stop regression! wTF is up with PATH? I haven't even been on one in ages myself. I used to enjoy it a lot more than the R train...or J. or any subway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm tomasz.:

i think they're just closing Exchange Place and WTC at weekends to make
post-Sandy repairs, but Exchange Place is the one i need. i suppose i could
go to Grove St, but i'm new here and would surely get lost
Avatar 🌍 9:13pm slugluv1313:

tomasz, if you walk east (towards the river) on Columbus Drive from the Grove Street PATH station, then make a right on to Washington Street, then a left on to Montgomery Street -- WFMU s/b right there, between Greene and Washington -- it is maybe a 15 minute walk? i hope that helps!
