Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from February 28, 2014 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

My gateway show was Wasted Vinyl that I tuned in back in 1987, when I started living in Dobbs Ferry, New York, and communted into The City. Somewhere, I have an old WFMU listener's guide with the 7 Wonders of New Jersey, like the Mysterious Hyphens of Ho-Ho-Kus, or the one strange factory that actually emits pleasant aromas.

I remember reading about WFMU djs in some zine around '97. In '98, my job (while graduating university) was the only place w/ the bandwidth that could actually sometimes stream the primitive tinny WFMU stream at night. Moved here in 2000 for grad school, and the rest is history.

After I had lived in the Chicago for over a decade, and streaming radio stations started appearing, it was like 2005 or something, and I thought: "What was that station out of East Orange New Jersey? Hmm WFMU, I wonder if they are steaming". Then I did a search and found it, tuned it in, and Give The Drummer Some was playing and I thought: "Wow! I love how the sweetest, soulful-est musical moment in the movie Car Wash is accompanied by scenes of butter packets falling from the ceiling on a guy's head.
