Greetings! Hope you can pledge tonight to support WFMU! If you pledge to my show as usual I've made a custom conceptual world music cd for everyone who pledges $75 or more - this year's theme is "Cross Cultural Confusion". A cd chock-full of music that blurs genre boundaries: Okinawan island song meets African highlife style; Polish highland fiddles collide with reggae toasters, Middle Eastern music blended with Balkan Brass, Finnish / Indian bhangra; and lots more. Even French icon Serge Gainsbourg gets into the act with an Antillean-style selection. But if all that doesn't float your boat you can choose a different DJ's premium cd instead!

Plus if you do pledge $75 or more to my show you'll be in the running for our Grand Prize! We're giving away a World Music Grab Bag to one lucky winner - an Indian carry-bag filled with a dozen cds from around the world PLUS two classic Earthworks Records African LPs. But you must pledge $75 or more to Transpacific Sound Paradise by the end of tonight's show to have a chance to win! Just use the pledge box at the top of this page to make your pledge. Thanks!

Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Bas NL:

I've seen Bombino live on stage by Rob's recommendation couple of months back.. Brillant!!
Avatar 6:34pm JoeyCee:

Ya Revere got a lot of Boat People in the early 80s...changed the neighborhood from Jewish delis to Cambodian rest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Trouble:

  6:41pm Jonathan:

Avatar 6:47pm northguineahills:

I always though Rob and Gary from Bodega Pop on GTDS stream should do a show together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Stanley (in Edinburgh):

Andrew in Edinburgh.
Way to go!
  6:51pm Steve-O:

I'm from TX myself, but I don't really have much of an accent.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Stanley:

ngh - nice to see your heart.
Avatar 6:54pm northguineahills:

There have been a lot of pledges from Glasgow and Edinburg.

Thanks Stanley. I had three phone interviews Friday, so I felt confident enough to drop some coin on multiple shows, and I won a CD on Kurt's show. 2nd time in the last 10 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Stanley:

ngh.... good karma will prevail.

(We'll have to have a FMU meet-up in Scotland one day)
Avatar 7:01pm northguineahills:

My surname is from Clackmannanshire, and 3/4ths of my family are from Scotland and made it across the pond in the 17-19th centuries. I made it to Edinburgh when I was in High School in '93. Had a blast.
Avatar 7:03pm northguineahills:

I wish I didn't blow my wad Friday, so many awesome prizes on Rob's show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Stanley:

ngh - If you make it to the land of your ancestors again, do get in touch.
(I blew the rest of my wad this morning so all I can do now is cheer everyone else on)
Avatar 7:10pm vanya moscow:

wow! markscheiders! rob always surprises!
Avatar 7:14pm northguineahills:

When I first met my fiancee in Mexico, 7 years ago (while djing), she took me a store that had cdrs of cumbia rebajada in the ghetto of Monterrey. Got some awesome stuff, but they were surprised a gringo wanted the cumbia, and not drugs (which the store was an obvious front).
Avatar 7:19pm Ed in Scotchland:

Another member of the Scotland contingent checking in this very early Sunday morning.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:31pm Bas NL:

Cornelius Vreeswijk! Dutchman singing samba in Swedish.. wow ;)
Avatar 7:37pm northguineahills:

Off to go see Fire Come Walk w/ Me. Cheers!
Avatar 7:45pm fleep:

It's called "the long tail," the far end of the bell curve, where the best stuff lives. We live in an incredible age of access, and WFMU was there before anyone else.
  7:52pm Toby:

More than two? May I suggest The World/Inferno Friendship Society. Art Deco meets Klez meets cabaret meets punk meets ...
Avatar 8:00pm listener number 108581:

wad is officially blown here...go other people!
  8:04pm Steve-O:

Believe it or not, I caught this show a few times myself when on Cartoon Network's Boomerang.....=)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm davex:

Good morning everyone! Checking in from the German East...
  8:12pm JakeGould:

Hi Dave X, I am in America East! How is life in the GDR this morn evening?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm davex:

Hi Jake! I used to be in America East myself, but that was ages ago. The X-GDR is unusually mild and pleasant at this particular time of year and day.
  8:16pm JakeGould:

Great! Daylight savings time for us here in the U.S.!
  8:17pm Steve-O:

@davex: Where in eastern Germany, btw?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm davex:

Thanks for the reminder Jake! What does that mean for this show? Rob? Anyone?

Steve, that would be Leipzig, the heart and (musical) soul of the East.
  8:22pm JakeGould:

DaveX, Daylight savings time means that this weekend time jumps 1 hour forward on the U.S. Daylight Savings time in the GDR happens at the end of this month, right? So between now & then you need to tune in 1 hour later? I think?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm davex:

That's the thing, Jake. I was just thinking that it might shorten (or lengthen?) this show, if the springing ahead were to happen now. And yes, we move ahead later, so confusing!
  8:26pm JakeGould:

It won’t shorten the show. But will make your life a tad confusing until March 31st.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm davex:

That's right, it will shorten whatever is on at 2 a.m. EST, which I will sleep through (if everyone here lets me).
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Ken From Hyde Park:

For the DST changeover, Mary Wing & Jonathan Herweg go 2-1/2 hours each.
  8:29pm JakeGould:

Thanks Ken! I like the way WFMU is disorganized, yet is aware of stuff like this & works through it.
  8:29pm Steve-O:

@davex: Leipzig? Cool.

Also, Dave, have you ever had a ketwurst? =)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm davex:

@Ken: Thanks, that is a great solution!
@Steve: No, I never even heard of that. Should I have? But then again I never eat any kind of Wurst...
  8:34pm JakeGould:

I’m first American generation. My parents from Poland. Grew up eating wursts. Not anymore. Just saying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Trouble:

pledge now!!! rob is here every week for you! show your love, sadly things are slow, but good chance to win!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm SeanG:

Go Bas!
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Bas NL:

PlEdGe! pLeDgE!
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Ken From Hyde Park:

If only someone at the station could sing the "Call Me Maybe" song. I'm sure that would rake in some more pledges. Anyone there know that song?
  8:54pm JakeGould:

Ken, sing that and “That Don’t Impress Me Much.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm Karen in Sleepy Hollow:

Pledge! You know you want that grand prize!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Karen in Sleepy Hollow:

Congrats Bas, I'm so jealous!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm davex:

Congrats Bas!
  9:00pm Kevlicki:

Ken, there's always the hood and mouth archives
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Bas NL:

Wowwww!!! Fantastic! I'm going to enjoy that!!
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Ken From Hyde Park:

What's the French name for The Netherlands? Pays Bas?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm davex:

Douze points?
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 9:03pm Bas NL:
