Hola, Diane and Hearty!

Hearty, the amount of thickness of hair on your head can impact your hat size.
Avatar 12:15pm Cecile:

amount and thickness, der.

"Fun Machine, Fun Machine, take me anywhere!" Hey Diane! Hey Hearty! Digging the dynamic of you's guys!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Caryn:

That whole head discussion reminded me of how Richard E. Grant once wrote about film stars having unusually big heads. Not as in conceited, but big in size. He theorized that the big head, and consequently big face, lured viewers in and in some cases made emoting easier to put across, thus helping the big-headed achieve star status.
Avatar 12:17pm pierre:

Avatar 12:17pm Cecile:

yea, I've heard that.
That's why a lot of famous people look like lollipops
Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Ralphine:

I heard that Merv Griffin had the same head-size theory and that he cast Vanna White on Wheel of Fortune because of her big head.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm coe:

Not being up their for marathon has been crushing but not making any kind of appearance for a DK marathon show would have been devastating.

Avatar 12:25pm Danne D:

Hi Diane :)
Hi Hearty :)
Hi Everyone :)

Jealous of the folks in the phone room getting to meet Hearty :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Caryn:

@Cecile: well, the lollipop thing is exacerbated by the need to be more and more thin.

But I wonder if the "big head leads to stardom" thing is not so much about a large face luring viewers in, but evolution. Baby animals of pretty much all species have the same characteristics: large head, large eyes, etc. (large head mainly because of how developed the brain needs to be for the young to survive), and it's thought that through evolution, those characteristics have become universally appealing to all animal species to elicit a mothering, protective instinct and thus keep more young from dying. If we have evolved into a species that is instinctively drawn to big heads, it might account for why people with big heads often rise to stardom. People are drawn to them without even understanding why.
Avatar 12:28pm Cecile:

so, what you're saying is cute overload is evolutionary adaption. :D

Diane, which big 4 thrash metal band do you want to hit with a cinder block?
Avatar 12:34pm Diane Kamikaze:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Mike East:

@Cecile - what's your answer to that question? I don't think I've ever seen you answer it yourself. My guess would be all of them.
Avatar 12:34pm Luna:

Sheesh. Enjoying the on air banter!
Avatar 12:34pm glenn:

i wonder what hearty thinks of voivod?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Caryn:

Hmm, considering how an issue with environmentalism is how people are more willing to donate to protect cute, furry or smiley animals as opposed to insects, fungi, etc., I wonder if some species will learn to adapt quickly enough to try and survive by getting cuter, thus eliciting more protection from humans? (Logically, I doubt it, because I think such trends are not detected by animals, but it would make for an interesting story idea.)

Avatar 12:44pm Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Caryn:

@Stevel: exactly. Like, a honey badger can look cute, but you forget about that once one leaps on your genitals and tries to rip them off your body. Cuteness only goes so far.

@Cecile: well, the ewoks did have dead black eyes like frigging sharks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Ike:

@Mariano, they probably wouldn't get caught (see what TonyB said), but if they did, the fine is unpredictable and could possibly change at any time. It's insanity: You can only hope to forecast FCC actions based on past rulings, as they don't set in stone any real rules, but "fuck" is reliably verboten.

  1:06pm ъїιι:

Wow this dude can really play guitar!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm Caryn:

@Mike: I find it interesting that just as "Empire Strikes Back" is the best of the SW movies, its special edition is also the least sucky one. I suppose mainly because the digital additions were mostly adding in background windows and cleaning up dodgy shadows, whereas in the other two there were constant "comedy" aliens pratfalling in the background or dumb CGI bands ruining things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Andrew Waterloo:

@Caryn, The superiority of Empires Strike Back can be directly linked to the lesser involvement of George Lucas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm coe:

I am going to make a statement that I have had my life threatened for on many occasions but I think the Raiders series far outweighs SW's by a mile. Just my opinion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Caryn:

@Andrew: agreed. Also, I think the choice of Irvin Kershner as director made all the difference. It wasn't until I saw the making of -documentaries that I realised how many little character tics and details he added into the film through his character direction. Like Chewbacca wailing when Han and Luke were left out on the surface of Hoth when the doors were locked.
Avatar 1:11pm V Priceless:

@ Chris - agreed! They are doing Ink & Iron fest in California in June so far!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Mike East:

@Caryn - ugh...those CGI bands. I gave the my VHS tapes of the originals to my nephew years ago..I'm gonna go get them from him so I can show them to my daughter.
  1:13pm tomasz.:

i've always wanted to know the complete list of things the FCC prohibits you from saying on radio. yeah, yeah, George Carlin, before anyone says it, but is that comprehensive/up to date?
Avatar 1:13pm Cecile:

Empire Strikes Back is the best of the three, hands down.
Avatar 1:13pm V Priceless:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Caryn:

@Mike: I'm holding on to my VHS copies for dear life.

@coe: I think both are excellent. And both brought low by the later additions to the series (the prequel trilogy for SW, Indy 4 for Raiders).
  1:14pm tomasz.:

Glenn, yeah, pretty much the same thing back home. i've heard "shit" in mid-afternoon radio plays even on the August BBC Radio 4, and at night it's even freer.

Avatar 1:20pm Diane Kamikaze:

Detroit didn't make the cut. Green Bay= Vinter
Avatar 1:20pm Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Ike:

@tomasz@1:13, there is no list! That's what's so insane! See Coe's link far above -- ALL the FCC says is that you can't be "indecent" 6 a.m.-10 p.m. After 10 you can be "indecent" but not "obscene." But what the fuck does that mean? WHO KNOWS? Carlin was mostly just making that shit up, I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm mariano:

Wow, haven't heard any Ian Dury in a while. Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Caryn:

@Ike: Carlin was definitely making it up, but at least he had logical criteria he followed in selecting the words, unlike the FCC, who just seem to wing it as the mood strikes them. (Or based on how much publicity a case has.)

And while they dick around w/oppressing free speech, the FCC is falling down on the job of going after 90.9 FM pirates interfering with WFMU in Flatbush and Paterson. They've been there for years, fucking up FMU's signal, and FCC enforcement is understaffed, or afraid to go into those neighborhoods, or something. Honestly as someone who donates 500 a year (sharing this just to prove a point not to toot horn) the monthly payment really does not hurt that much especially since I don't really pay out for as much physical product anymore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Caryn:

@LCD: I still want to see the original, 5-hour cut of "Dune". Herbert saw it and considered it brilliant. And then the movie was cut into shreds. Where's the damn special edition or Criterion release of that?!?
Avatar 1:57pm map:

I don't think the first hour of Dune is so bad (Lynch's directors cut; characters have no internal monologue and some other changes; and i think it leaves out the introductory scenes). I like it better than SW, although it's a different kind of scifi and I was probably too old when I first saw SW. Of course Lynch's Dune doesn't hold a candle to Alien; Alien got the art team that was slated for Jodorowski's Dune.
  1:59pm LovecraftDude888:

Caryn: that's a complex situation, from what I hear. There's that awful extended TV cut on the new DVD of DUNE....but we know what that's like...and I'm not sure the original Lynch 5 hr. cut exists in any form now. Maybe. I hope it turns up and they can restore that and release it at some point. But Universal was not interested in any 5 hr. film.....then or now. That was just one problem with it

@caryn my understanding is some of the footage is actually lost.
Anybody see the Sci Fi channel's Frank Herbert's Dune. I actually own it but have not hunkered down to watch it.
Looking forward to Jodorowsky's Dune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Caryn:

I still have a soft spot for Dune. I always watch it when it's on tv, it's just entertaining. The new tv series version was just boring and disappointing. I remember the people making it talking about how they wanted to fix some of the problems the Lynch one had, like Kyle MacLachlan being way too old to play a 15-year-old, and then their Paul Atreides looked like a 30-year-old gym buff. WTH!?!
  2:02pm tomasz.:

Whitey, just let Hearty know about yr comment, he's gone off somewhere!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Mike East:

I kinda like the TV mini series of Dune...though I didn't read the books, so I couldn't complain about what they might have changed or skipped.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm common:

i read dune when the flick came out. i convinced my friend to go see it and when they handed us pages of definitions at the theater, my friend refused. I went through with it. love david lynch, though.
Avatar 2:05pm Whitey:

tomassz, 1st rule of Hearty: do not let him wander off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Caryn:

Another alternative version I'd like to see is "Breakfast Club". John Hughes kept the original cut in his safe at home, and didn't want it released, so it probably never will be, but I'm just curious. Apparently a way worse movie, but some of the cut music stuff sounds brilliant, and some of the cut stuff (like an entire subplot including fantasy musical sequences) just sounds interesting, if odd. And I'd like to see some of the behind-the-scenes stuff. I mean, John Cusack narrowly lost the role of Bender. I want to see those audition tapes, if they exist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm Caryn:

@Mike East: I appreciated that they tried to convey more of the complex political and religious plotting that are so central to the books, and some of the production design was decent, but otherwise the tv series was... lacking. With all its faults, the Lynch version has an off-kilter charm and I think some genius casting choices.

  2:09pm LovecraftDude888:

ha a director's cut Breakfast Club...hadn't heard of that. As for the DUNE miniseries'....didn't like the main one at all...Dune Messiah was ok in spots. I was just getting seriously into Herbert when the movie came along....caught up with his other novels then too. Still a huge fan of the DUNE film but of course it's not great, a mess but a fun mess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm mariano:

I like Dune, but I'm a big Lynch fan, so I tend to be favorably impressed by what he does. It's such a mess in a lot of ways: like, seriously, Toto for the soundtrack? But it has some real art film elements from some of Lynch's early work. The scene where the guild navigator is folding space is visually very much like some of his early shorts.
  2:10pm LovecraftDude888:

you know yer in trouble at a movie when they hand you a cheat booklet! Even with LotR they don't do that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm coe:

another good alternative which I have seen is Kill Bill the whole Bloody affair which is the Cannes version and has only been screened in US like 6 times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm Caryn:

@coe: I forget, is that the version they released in Japan, or was that yet another version?
  2:11pm LovecraftDude888:

supposedly Cameron ripped off some of the Jesus INcident books of Frank's for Avatar.....it's possibly true. or was inspired a lot by those books.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm Caryn:

I hope the original cut of Dune turns up miraculously, like the original cut of The Wicker Man did. That's a brilliant film. The less said about the Nicolas Cage version, the better. (Although that freakout bee scene is hilarious.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm mariano:

It's funny Dune came up, because right before, I was reading the wiki for guild navigators. All because I saw a picture of Rush Limbaugh, and couldn't decide if he was more of a Baron Harkonnen or the guild navigator in the tank.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm Andrew Waterloo:

@Caryn, like the way the longer cuts of Metropolis continue to show up.
  2:15pm LovecraftDude888:

Hi Hearty. It's Marc your friend from Twitter.
  2:17pm LovecraftDude888:

is Jodorowsky actually trying to still do a Dune film?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Caryn:

@mariano: I think Rush is more of a Glossu Rabban.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm coe:

@lovecrftdude888 no they have made a documentary on it that is now doing the festival circuit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm coe:

  2:20pm LovecraftDude888:

Coe..oh ok I see. wacky, he's a wacky guy! they had some Jodorowsky books at PS1 Queens a few years ago....should have bought 'em. ah well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Caryn:

@coe: So its fate is essentially the same as that of Gilliam's Don Quijote movie?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm mariano:

@Caryn and @LD888: Thing is, Rabban was a warrior, and Rush is a draft dodger who probably couldn't fight his way out of a paper bag (and I love Paul Smith, the actor who played Rabban, and wouldn't want to insult him). Rabban would be like that Staten Island congressman who threatened to throw the reporter off the balcony. Except Rabban would have done it, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm coe:

@caryn it's close. The Japanese version is based on that. but there a few almost unnoticeable differences. The WBA is the one that QT was actually in the room for cutting.
Avatar 2:22pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Diggeth Krallice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm Caryn:

@mariano: true. I think of him more as a Rabban than the Baron simply because I think he lacks the intelligence of the Baron, but has the same cruelty and problems with women (and humans in general). Plus, he's essentially being used as a political pawn by higher-ups, just like Rush is happy doing the bidding of the Kochs and such.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm coe:

@caryn YES! very much so LOL
  2:24pm LovecraftDude888:

Pazuzu this is up my alley as well.. given I wrote a few things on Blatty and Exorcist over the years. Anyway....didn't mean to do a whole diatribe...but given DUNE came up I had to spout off a bit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm mariano:

@Caryn: Excellent points!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm coe:

@andrew Waterloo that last cut of Metropolis was beautifully restored. probably one of the best restorations I have ever seen.
  2:25pm LovecraftDude888:

I definitely wanna see this Jodorowsky docu. I think I heard about it a few months ago actually
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Caryn:

BTW, that should be "temppeli", not "tempelli". The name of the track means "Empty Temple".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm mariano:

so much disappointment with the muppet dvd's. Between cut scenes and missing music hurts so bad. I have a home made DVD of missing scenes that I have collected on line.
Avatar 2:30pm Cecile:

and as long as there are drunk teenagers and free time, the Ouija board will never die.

nevermind guys...I'm a bit miffed since Ken the redoubtable station manager wrote me and told me to not overpost and stuff....ok. some of that had to do with that I don't get along clearly with Pseu....or vice versa or RR Rabbit as well. Who cares? I'm not getting nasty with anybody! I love Ken!.....I wanna have his kids! haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm coe:

@cecile a LOT of rights issues with that show. Big chunks of the Alice Cooper episode missing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Caryn:

They never showed Sesame St. here (well, they showed some of the new stuff for about a year about a decade back, but that's it), but The Muppet Show and Fraggle Rock were touchstones of my childhood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm mariano:

@Caryn: That's great! i, too, miss sctv.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm coe:

Another show it took us forever to get clean uncut episodes of was Young Ones because of music rights.

I meant, I love RRabbit too! But Pseu....i dunno she doesnt like me. That's ok
Avatar 2:38pm Cecile:

Caryn, full SCTV reissues came out. BUt the set was quite expensive.

And music rights are why it took forever to get Homicide and Wiseguy reissues.
Avatar 2:39pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Who couldn't get along with Artaud?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm mariano:

@Caryn: I found a torrent of the first season, when Harold Ramis was on, but before Rick Moranis. Some of that stuff is so brilliantly funny. Looking for other seasons. When I was a kid, PBS used to play whole, pre-NBC episodes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Caryn:

I hate that it's really difficult nowadays to get a version of "Animal House" with the original music. It really takes you out of the movie. I got the dvd just for the extras, but I had to trawl tv showings to find a showing that had the original music intact. I burned that onto a dvd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm Mike East:

...watched Ghostbusters 2 last night. I love Rick Moranis. RIP Harold Ramis
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Caryn:

@Cecile: Same with Freeks and Geeks. Really expensive and took forever to come out due to the music rights. Ah, Wiseguy. I loved William Russ as Roger Lococco. And of course, Kevin Spacey. "The toes knows."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Caryn:
