There's no guarantee that .pdf won't be corrupted or will be preserved any way in the future except for the fact that it is easier to make copies of it. Besides, you really need a BIG budget to move works to digital form.

@Whooda: I don't know the document you're talking about, but this is a sensible issue in the opening of the archives in Latin American countries regarding the military dictatorships. Things get converted to digital and then launched to the public out of context and sometimes with no guarantee that the document was not altered in some way. Most of the times not, but besides an institutional imprint somewhere, you don't have a safeguard that the document won't lent itself easily to misuse (but any document can be misused...oh boy)

@Whooda The problem with your argument is that you're forgetting that scanners introduce layers.

@Andrew, what flatbed scanner does layers without software to support it? Again, just research it. It's not a fact I want to prove to anyone on a music board.
Avatar 5:32pm
doca:

@Whooda: Yeah, it's part of the digital thing. The digital establishes a different relation between content and form, as one becomes another but, at the same time, you can change one without changing the other (like presenting something in a different manner than the original but keeping the same content, as a Kindle file does)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm
Andrew Waterloo:

@Whooda Any scanner that outputs any file format besides Jpg.
Avatar 5:36pm

@Doca Kindle doesn't do layers. I was a printer and then a digital prepress operater for the California State Publishing Office (formerly State Printing Plant). It has been years ago but I trained with Photoshop, Illusterator, Pagemaker, Quark, etc. I operated the first digital color copier there. And Loretta Fudd is still dead AFTER surving the crash.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm

Most scanners will optically convert text on a document into some from of editable ASCII txt. So the scanner will attempt to separate document into layers of separate paragraphs and separate images.

@Whooda: I used just as an example, as you can read the same thing with a different disposition on the screen that is not the same thing as just zooing in or out an image file. A mp3 file has layers, as to grasp how it is part of the conversion to digital.
