Hey Joe!!!! Congrats on the marathon victory! I've been out of commission on Tuesdays for a while and haven't been able to catch the 3 Chord Monte as much as I'd have liked. It's good to be back.

I know Ullman was not the original. just acknowledging i wasnt hip enough to know the original back in 1982 or 3
Avatar 12:44pm Cecile:

I only knew it because all the hipsters who were playing it at the college station were going "oh, it's a kirstie mccoll song'.

Avatar 12:48pm Cecile:

someone else did it, too. I am going nuts trying to remember. (I know the Hollies)
Avatar 12:51pm Joe B:

Linda Ronstandt had a hit with it, and her version holds up! i heard it recently
Avatar 12:51pm Joe B:

and the great evie sands with the original
Avatar 12:52pm Cecile:

Maybe I'm just thinking of the Hollies.

...even like the tune 'Now's the Time' by the Hollies from 1963 ! - which is pretty early...

huh, thought he was singing Everybody's in Ballston...you know, Ballston, VA...where I'm sitting now....
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:04pm efd:

Tommy Facenda needs to get on this and crank out a bunch of regional versions!
Avatar 1:05pm jljl:

Ballston sounds very exciting: "Ballston is a neighborhood in Arlington County, Virginia and is home to the Ballston-MU station on the Orange Line of the Metrorail subway system."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Mike East:

I had a dream that I was supposed to be jamming with Lindsey Buckingham, but I couldn't get my gear together and he started getting pissed off for making him wait.
Avatar 1:07pm dc pat:

@jljl: You got it. THat's about as good as it gets. We do have the Ballston Commons Mall here though where the Caps practice.....but I hate hockey so...
  1:10pm pierre:

One thing that I learned from that marathon : Joe's laugh is contagious.
Avatar 1:10pm Tom from Detroit:

Chip Taylor, Al Gorgoni & Trade Martin have a version of can't let go and I did not google this. Gold star, please. I heard M. Shelley play it about 6 months ago.
Avatar 1:13pm jljl:

dcpat: Yes the 2nd item i see on Google is indeed the Mall. Which I'd think is a step above the orange line but who knows. You got a short ride to DC at least.
Avatar 1:13pm dc pat:

Ah man, this was a great winter. Had some killer sledding, snow cocktail parties, snowball wars.. Sad to see it go.
Avatar 1:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Chip Taylor co-wrote it ; reading the Hollies wiki: all those very great early songs I love from compilations did very little in the U.S. charts until 'Bus Stop' in '66...
Avatar 1:16pm dc pat:

Indeed that's why I rode in the wrong direction first this morning. Now I'm feeling it though....

Yes, a speedy recover to Fred. Nothing can kill that guy.
Avatar 1:18pm Joe B:

Cecile, if you weren't already out of the woodwork i figured the Blind Shake would do the trick!
Avatar 1:18pm Tom from Detroit:

Hey Mike!!
Avatar 1:20pm Cecile:

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:21pm tim from champaign:

Nice saxamaphone! That's how sax's should be played on rock songs.
Avatar 1:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Dave Davies said guitar tuners ruined R'n'R - I shudder to think how AutoTune makes him feel...
  1:28pm Mike Sin:

Hi Detroit Tom K!
  1:29pm Figures of Light:

Thanks, Joe -- typically killer show! Happy to say THE WINTER OF OUR DISCONTENT IS OVER!! Spring is here - rock on!!
Avatar 1:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- very credible Mighty Wolf cover ! ☆
  1:31pm Figures of Light:

And total good wishes to Fred Cole -- you can make it, man -- be well!!!
Avatar 1:32pm Cecile:

Open heart surgery is a lot better now than even about 30 yrs ago. It will be a bit of a haul for him, but he should be OK.
Avatar 1:32pm dc pat:

Yeah, not bad wolf cover at all.
Avatar 1:33pm dc pat:

Well, tuners sure allow rockers avoid having any ear at all. I can still tune guitars fine without. Sure saves time though.
Avatar 1:33pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Scott H. Biram...or The Dirty Old One Man Band' - hehehe.

Fred and Toody's WFMU set available here: freemusicarchive.org...
  1:42pm Figures of Light:

I love this record -- you mean, you make a whole bunch of different tracks, and then mix them ALL into one?? Wow -- how does that work?????
  1:43pm Figures of Light:

Yes, it's essential that all the tracks be well separated from each other -- who knows what might happen otherwise??? I shudder to think! Next you should play the old 7-11 Slurpee single!!
Avatar 1:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

FoL: ...long story why I use it ! : For one thing - 'Rabbit' & 'Revolution' are meant to be a humorous paradox - like 'Ninja Turtle' - &/or attempting to embrace this contradiction in myself - successfully or not...

- Had a friend - knew no history of heart conditions - whatever - was walking down the street & felt winded - decided he better sit down - & then see a Dr. - well - Dr. said go to hospital NOW & get these tests, & Dr. then called hospital & said 'Don't let him out of your sight!' - & once @ hospital they said - quadruple bypass, NOW - starting from just a 'normal day'...

...Then you take AutoTune & make everything sound like a perfect piece of robot garbage...
Avatar 1:44pm Joe B:

I do have the slurpee song - be careful what you wish for!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm Mike East:

I'm thinking about getting an old 4 track tape recorder. Having too many technical difficulties using computers to record. Anybody know any brands/models to absolutely stay away from?
Avatar 1:45pm Tom from Detroit:

I'm getting confused. Can we please play this again at 16 rpm so I can take better notes?
  1:45pm Figures of Light:

Rev Rabbit -- Yes, there was a radio show in the 80s called Rabbits With a Vengeance, playing stuff like Joe plays -- we need more radio like this!!
Avatar 1:45pm Tom from Detroit:

I'm getting confused. Can we please play this again at 16 rpm so I can take better notes?
  1:46pm Figures of Light:

Joe -- I LOVE the Slurpee song, and also the Thom McAnn Pennywhistle shoe commercial -- or Crisis at Ole Miss with Chilly Charlie!! Play on!!
Avatar 1:46pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...that's two tracks used up already Tom !!...
  1:47pm Figures of Light:

Yes, I hear tell that as many as 10 tracks can be used -- perhaps even more!!
Avatar 1:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...someday they'll snigger about our bandwidth & server anxieites...
  1:50pm John L.:

You don't have the new Dex Romweber Duo there, do you?
  1:50pm Figures of Light:

Back to mono!! And Karen Verros rules!!
  1:52pm KP:

Is this from the Beatles vs. Don Ho album?
  1:52pm Figures of Light:

Joe -- I bet you don't have The Russians Were a Rushin' a Rocket to The Moon, or do you, by Jerry Livingston and The Versatones?
  1:53pm 317:

Caught the Orwells show in DC a few nights ago. Reminded me of hardcore shows at the old 9:30 Club 30 years ago...
Avatar 1:55pm Tom from Detroit:

At the Cleve Rock Hall they have these 2 giganto recorders Beatles used through mid 60s. Two because they only did 4 tracks each and needed to ping pong. I guess George Martin didn't have the kind of budget the Shags were going with.

Avatar 2:02pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...proper Brit engineers in white coats...Tom Dowd @ Atlantic in the U.S. had 8-track & faders & things much earlier...An interesting read is George Martin's 'W/ a Little Help from My Friends' about recording Pepper & all the contortions necessary; he says he started so early in history they used weights to cut records because they were more reliable than the electrical supply...& that when he talks to Engineers now he feels like the WWI pilot talking to jet-fighters & such...often think - what do all those Best Albums Ever from the mid-60s have ion common w/ Lo-Fi - ??: They're 4-track...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Mike East:

I'm going to New Orleans next month. Beyond excited.
  2:06pm LovecraftDude888:

Mike East: I've had good results with Magix Samplitude Producer or any of their apps., and basic PC, but you might be better off with the fastest Mac you can get, and something even more "pro" than Samp...but I love that program. Otherwise, maybe a good solid portastudio would be good for you? Depends what type of recording you are gonna be doing as well. If you're getting dropouts/latency on a PC or Mac, prob. too old and slow machine, not enough memory, or just buggy software or hardware. or both. And that's all I have to say for now! I know one famous mastering place in NJ use nothing but analog old Ampex recorders and stuff....but that's mastering and old-school equipment, not really for home use, unless you can build a real home studio, etc.
Avatar 2:06pm Joe B:

Mike be sure to hit the Green Goddess. the owner/chef is Guitar Lightnin's drummer. they usually have FMU on in the kitchen
Avatar 2:07pm V Priceless:

cool how faithful the Devo version is to this, considering how they usually "Picasso'ed" covers!
  2:07pm David:

Where would one find the Pavement rendition of "Trouble"?
Avatar 2:07pm Cecile:

I hope you're kidding, Tim.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm Mike East:

will do, Joe B!

thanks for the tips, LCD. I'm just sick of computers, I think.

Avatar 2:14pm Cecile:

Joe, have you and Brian Turner ever considered doing a six-hour punk/garage extravaganza for marathon?
Avatar 2:17pm Joe B:

Hi David, you misheard, sorry, was talking about The Killing Moon that Sweet & Hoffs also do on that album that Pavement covers
Avatar 2:23pm Joe B:

Cecile, I could never do a back to back marathon show. too insane!
Avatar 2:24pm Prashanth:

Guten Abend, FMU ppl!
  2:25pm 317:

jljl - Best show I've seen in years. I'd forgotten how truly anarchic--not just loud & sloppy--rock could be. Most out-of-control show since Doggy Style in 1986, but still sounded great. Can't believe they didn't shut down the show, as the bouncers threatened...Steven Malkmus also put on a great show a week or so back, along with Endless Boogie. SM's cover of F. Mac's Oh Well was the shit.

Maybe it makes them worse. Either way it's fun.
  2:40pm 317:

Doggy Style came out fully naked. The singer sang through a megaphone through a guitar amp. I was 15 and thought I would be knifed to death. A guy I knew from the skate ramp, Tony Thai-man, lived in a car out back. DC is a lot cleaner and safer now, esp. the rock club scene, ala NYC.
