So, based on your conversation at the end of Bryce's show, we have proof that FMU DJs are paid in drugs paid for with marathon funds. I won't say anything if you share.

my good friend and coworker records pieces similar to this but he's such a perfectionist that he hasn't yet "released" any of it. I gotta get him to send some stuff to the station. I think a lot of FMU'ers would be really into it.
  4:11pm
Dean:

If I heard correctly, the date of composition of Aitsi is unclear? In a review by Robert Carl of this recording in Fanfare, "Scelsi's great breakthrough occurred in the late 1950s, in part when he began to improvise and transcribe the results; this in turn, perhaps apocryphally, came after a nervous breakdown, during which he played and listened obsessively to a single repeated piano pitch while institutionalized. The 1974 Aitsi seems to draw on this experience, and is a piano work like no other I've heard."
Avatar 4:13pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

mike, would love to hear it!

dean, didn't mean to say it's unclear, just that it wasn't on the record and i hadn't found it yet. thanks for the info.

And to the NSA, that was a movie quote, not a threat of some kind. (Best to make these things clear...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm
Mike East:

I was trying to remember some good bomb verse earlier (see above). Some brilliant concepts in that flick, I think.
Avatar 4:49pm
doca:

@Caryn: what movie?
Avatar 4:50pm
Caryn:

@Mike: "The heavens declare the glory of the Bomb, and the firmament showeth His handiwork." is a favourite. But the final voice-over is sooo bleak and kind of fabulous at the same time (speaking of concepts): "In one of the countless billions of galaxies in the universe, lies a medium-sized star, and one of its satellites, a green and insignificant planet, is now dead."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm
Mike East:

ha! love it.
Avatar 4:52pm
Caryn:

@doca: "Beneath the Planet of the Apes", where MJ's gif is from this week.

@Mike: To be honest, it only comes 4th on my list of faves of the original movies, but it certainly has its moments.
Avatar 4:54pm
doca:

@Caryn: I thought it was that, seeing that movie only as a kid. It impressed me much, as the first Planet of the Apes one.

Seattle is like Minneapolis in a way, neither place is as weird or edgy as some of the residents would lead you to believe.

Avatar 5:09pm
Carmichael:

Seattle does have its share of posers, though. In some ways, the 21st century Haight Ashbury.
Avatar 5:10pm
Caryn:

@sb/p: that would be great! Here's a bit of trivia: the voice-over was done by Paul Frees, who was also the voice of K.A.R.R. (the evil version of K.I.T.T. on Knight Rider) and the titular evil supercomputer in Colossus: The Forbin Project (which I highly recommend, and which undoubtedly inspired the Terminator movies' Skynet).
Avatar 5:10pm
Cecile:

you hit the nail on the head, Carm.
Avatar 5:13pm
doca:

@Caryn: love Colossus, great movie. I remember when I was 12 saw Colossus and Silent Running on night TV, scared the shit out of me.
Avatar 5:17pm
Carmichael:

Silent Running is timeless. There are so many themes running through it that it still seems poignant today. Bruce Dern made a name for himself with that one.
Avatar 5:19pm
doca:

You're right, Carm. Children of Men is a modern movie that leaves me with the same sense of "This s*** is real", don't know how it will age, though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm
Mike East:

I'm a huge fan of Children of Men. I love Clive Owen though, so I may be biased. I've just added Colossus to my netflix queue.
Avatar 5:24pm
Cecile:

Was Colossus one of those Quartermain movies? i get a lot of 70s SF mixed up
Avatar 5:24pm

CoM was so dark and hopeless, but I loved it anyway. I was about halfway suicidal after seeing it the 1st time ...

JohnEBGood:

Awesome. Thanks for the journey.
  5:30pm
JohnEBGood:

Oh Yeah! Every thing gonna b awlwrite :)
Avatar 5:30pm
Caryn:

Somehow, the combination of post-60s loss of innocence and the Cold War produced some truly bleak movies and television. Heck, the number of nuclear annihilations I've seen acted out on tv alone... Let's not even mention "When The Wind Blows". "Children of Men" was definitely a modern continuation of this, rising out of current concerns.

@doca: "Silent Running" makes me think of the other ecological oldie I adore, "Edge of Darkness". I can watch it again and again.
Avatar 5:31pm
Carmichael:

This Lightnin Hopkins is great, Kurt. He was someone's 1st cousin; was it Albert Collins? Johhny Copeland?
Avatar 5:33pm
Caryn:

@Cecile: nope, not Quartermain. Basically, the US and Soviet defence computers decide to join forces and rule the world. Great film, and one of those rare things, a movie that is better than the book it is adapted from.

I wonder why i cant get my gif avatar to work. Oh well
Avatar 5:52pm

@Caryn: I was talking to a friend of mine recently about just how all those paranoid apocaliptic dystopian movies and literature are accurate right now. Anyway, gonna check Edge of Darkness
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm
Mike East:

Is that Edge of Darkness with Joe Don Baker or Mel Gibson? or other?
Avatar 5:54pm
Caryn:

@doca: just make sure to get the 1985 miniseries (with Joe Don Baker, @Mike), not the 2010 movie (with Mel Gibson).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm
Mike East:

cool. I'll add it. I have the MST3K dvd of "Mitchell!"
Avatar 5:56pm

Listening to this show at the same time as a tv show about the odd jazz connections of Mussolini. It's an interesting combo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm

happy weekend all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm

Caryn, what's that show?!?
Avatar 5:58pm
northguineahills:

Thanks Kurt. Happy Weekend, y'all!
Avatar 5:58pm
Cecile:

keep your eye on the sandwich, Mike East.
Avatar 5:59pm
Caryn:

@Mike: the one with John Saxon and Linda Evans in it? MST3K did that? How did I miss that?!?
Avatar 6:01pm
Caryn:

@mariano: well, it actually talks about how Hitler and Stalin both disliked jazz, but Mussolini loved it, and about how Mussolini's son then became a prominent jazz musician (playing with Chet Baker and Dizzy Gillespie and such).
